What is power scaling? Is it the same thing as the infamous power levels? What are the common misconceptions regarding it? Is power scaling only utilized in anime series such as Dragon Ball Z & Dragon Ball Super, or is it used in several other franchises? Is Master Roshi truly more powerful feats wise compared to the Grand Priest and the Angels, or does scaling and statements help establish the pecking order? Do Marvel & DC Comics depend on power scaling and narrative to properly tier their characters? What about popular anime series like OPM, Naruto Shippuden, and even Yu Yu Hakusho? Find out the answers to these questions and much more as MJ and I go over why power scaling truly matters not only in Dragon Ball! Thank you guys very much for 30,000 subscribers! Please be sure to like and subscribe if you enjoyed!

Lol, says you. You litterally pick and choose when you want to power scale. I competly fodder stomped you in debate when I proved base ptora fusion > ssj god in the supers' anime contimum in which you promptly stopped replying. I've yet to hear an counter arguent with my kefla example, you only power scale when it suits your headcanon.

Broku72, first of all. Goku said he dosen't THINK he can beat berrus with fusion, but he wasn't sure. And that because he cant even SENSE BERRUS' Ki. No he isn't. How is Z vegito differnt then supers vegito? Did the portora mutlplyer jump dramastcially for vegito in super? It's still the same mutplyer. So you can use power scailing based upon the constant boost of potora. If BASE KELFA (formed from a fusion of a WEAKER BASE CAUFILA and kale) is stronger, much stronger then ssj god. If base vegito (formed from goku and vegeta in super) is stronger then the current ssj god goku We can conclude that Z vegito (BOG takes place only a few months after Z) was In fact stronger then Ssj god. Simple 101 power scailing. No wonder your favorite arc list was trash. You don't pay attention to details, and I thought you would be an OG db fan since you do vids on primarily Z and gt. I thought you were cool, but nope. Just an super anime fanboy. Block me, don't care. Just shows you're insecure and can't debate for sqaut.
@user-dn3fn3bg4l
@user-dn3fn3bg4l 6 жыл бұрын
Baby 1 was already super vegito tier. ssj4 goku MUD STOMPS ANY SSJ god. AF goku one shots the super verse. now this is all for the anime. Manga of super vs GT is little more tricky since ssj blue and ssj god are pretty OP in that contimum. Also, you should do content on the manga of super. It's far better then the anime, and I'd scuribe if you regulary did it.
@Broku72
@Broku72 6 жыл бұрын
He can't sense Beerus ki but he felt how hard Beerus was hitting and how fast Beerus was moving. And potentially the Potora power could be different in the sagas. As it is stated in the guides as A x B. If A and B get stronger, the multiplier is bigger. The Fusions you are comparing are actually irrelevant because at the time it is likely that the God form has a different multiplier between ritual and transformation. "arc list was trash". You can think that but the list is completely subjective on what someone finds enterataining. I am an OG Dragon Ball fan it is better than Super and GT. I left it out because it is the only one of the anime I never saw from start to finish. I have seen 90% of the episodes and all of the important fights but didn't have access to the DB anime for awhile and will finish it soon. But still, I read the DB manga at least 5 times lol. Obviously you know nothing about me.

My issue with power scaling, is not the power scaling itself. That's all fine, even though I prefer the narrative. My issue is with the power scaling community and how smug they really get. And this comment section is proving my point whole sale. Power scaling is fine, it's needed sometimes but people don't need to act like a smug shit about it.

People hate on power scaling cause it's contradictory a lot of the time. Final From Frost vs Final Form Frieza, who wins? Arguments for Frost: 1. Hit is SSB tier and states that Frost made him get serious for a moment. 2. Golden Frieza in rof arc was stronger than SSB Goku and his Final Form was equal to Goku's base. So now since his Golden form is equal to SSB Goku his final form should be slightly weaker than base Goku. 3. Frost threatens to take Final form Frieza out if he betrays him which implies he'd win. 4. 3rd form Frost was stronger than Base Goku in the U6 arc which means his final form should be leaps and bounds above Frieza's final. Arguments for Frieza: 1. Kept up with Gohan. 2. Champa said Frost stands no chance against Frieza. 3. Frieza nonchalantly took out Napapa, who made SSJ1 Cauliflia (who is equal to SSJ1 Goku) struggle. Also gave SSJ1 Goku trouble. 4. Frost referred to Frieza as "senpai" before Frieza even transformed which implies Frieza is stronger.
@user-er1ue6ui8d
@user-er1ue6ui8d 6 жыл бұрын
It is not that it's contradictory but it's constantly changing for example, feats from the U6 saga can't be used to determine Frost's strength because of how much has changed since U6 challenged U7

One major reason some fans dont want to accept scaling is bc they in many cases they want to believe there fav can stand up or is on par with the more powerful characters..we live in a world today where fans just want to believe what suits them and will try to attack you for defending the facts that are stated...just sad really.

Power scaling is stupid. Fights aren't won with brute strength and numbers, it's also won with strategy, technique, circumstance, and sometimes pure dumb luck. Assuming someone can occur the same feats as another just because they are "stronger" is close minded. You wouldn't assume someone in real life would be able to achieve the same feats as someone who is physically weaker just because "they are stronger". Would you assume someone who can lift 500+ Ibs. be able to long jump over 10 feet just because they are physically stronger? Of course not! Characters have unique strengths and weaknesses, it isn't a JRPG where everything is just a singular number statistic. That's my take on it.
@KirbyJet14
@KirbyJet14 3 жыл бұрын
It doesn't matter where you place a single number statistics, you're appealing to reality. I don't care about your implications towards reality and fiction concept, it's completely irrelevant to the discussion and narrative which point is that. That's not what we were discussing either, you obviously know that this is how the show mainly goes. We're not also being closed-minded, power scaling does not refer to a close-minded aspect of a view of a show. It's more comparing characters or just sometimes just flat-out power scaling for example speed defense skill and what not. It's not being close-minded if you understand it. The implication that you made was that reality somehow has an effect on fiction which is not the case. They're two different teams so that's really incoherence to conclusion that can be made, it's obvious that the show was not meant to be like real life. Everything is different. You're going off of Power scaling based on the names when thats just judging a book by it's cover, you actually haven't even read the book yourself or even bothered to look at it or skim over it. I would understand the point of view where you're coming from but obviously numbers and statistics can be evaluated in fiction, how do you think power level? Yes, it didn't really require skill and what not. Look at the fight for Goku and Frieza for example, Goku was at least 30000 more in power level than Frieza was, that's a huge difference but, it was actually a tussling fight. They went back and forth even though there was such a huge gap in power. This already proves that it doesn't fit The Narrative of skill all that completely, it's something else. Goku is a trained martial artist and what not so this alone proves that fiction in this sense or case is different from realith.

To me "power scaling" is taking into consideration every feat and ability x character has at their disposal in comparison to something else. It's not just about who hits harder. Maybe a better question is "who would win" or "how would they win". Just because you win doesn't always equate to you being stronger unless stated otherwise. Scaling in media where alot of fighting takes place (ie where story is told) is pretty important for narrative flow and believability. I feel like people see POWER and just think of the "It's over 9000!" meme and shut down when it's actually pretty straight forward. And those "who would win" type question are ALWAYS gonna be asked with this type of story.

Yep, even in Yu Yu Hakusho, they have statements that back characters up. For example if I remember correctly in the manga, yusuke's master told him that he could destroy a country if he should become fully enraged as an A class demon. So, is his master lying to him? Probably not he could probably blow up a f****** country LOL.

For the fandom it matters. For the plot not so much. Feats always take more precedence over fan theories however. Powerscaling involves too much speculation and “ballpark” number crunching to be accurate imo. Feats in the story may fluctuate but going with the most consistent showings simply makes the most sense. The characters will always be as strong as needed to push the plot or for the circumstance. Example: (Kale, Califla/Kefla) (Even Goku getting UI for the tourney only to lose it afterward) and (Vegeta ascending blue to keep up with and help Goku vs Jiren). I’d say this stuff is hardly quantifiable despite the math savvy part of the fan base and their calculations.

Honestly most people seem to hate scaling because it says who is more powerful then others as a fact 1. Characters in almost any series become stronger as the fight goes on power scaling is just to prevent it from going crazy 2. The only reason we never see feats to back up statements is because of the mortal limitations of shonen characters. Case in point, why we don't see Cell destroy a solar system is because none of the Z Fighters can breathe in space and if they tried to wear an armored space suit then it would get destroyed in the first five minutes of tanking the kind of damage Cell could put out. This is why the Goku vs Beerus fight is so important because Goku finally gets around this weakness through some unknown quality of god Ki that we can see the full scale effects of the battle, which only idiots want to deny. This mortal limitation thing is a constant problem in shonen because authors have trouble finding ways around these limits, especially if the technology in the universe they live in can't keep up with the destructive output. Furthermore sometimes the limit doesn't lay with the character but also the societal circumstances such as in Yu Yu Hakusho, if Yusuke is country level by the time he gets to the Dark Tournament, well then you have two problems. 1) They're fighting in a secret tournament, the whole point of the show is that Demon Society is hidden from humans so neither the hero or his opponent can cut loose and unleash that kind of power and bring attention to that society. 2; *They're fighting in a secret tournament*. A tournament with an arena, rules, and a friggin audience. This is where just about *all* shonen series fail usually, the author or a character gives a statement of power scaling proportions and then immediately relegates that destructive potential to an environment where it has to be constantly held in check because in Japanese culture discipline and control are highly valued traits. I wish a lot of eastern authors would give a giant 'screw you' to those notions and let their characters do what they claim they can do. In the west we love wanton destruction in a fictional character now and then which is why DC and Marvel's characters are often shown wrecking so much shit that the governments of Earth should be bankrupt by now for all the repairs constantly being made and stuff being replaced. This is my firm belief and opinion regarding this issue. Thank you for reading.

Depends on what your looking at. When it comes to viewing it as a critic power scaling is necessary. When it comes to watching as a fan I couldn’t care less. The last episode of Super I watched as a fan and it was very relaxing not worrying about all the scaling from an inconsistent show. My opinion. Just depends on what you’re viewing it from.

So what you saying is watching it as a brainless person makes it enjoyable. In that case your opinion wouldn't matter to the entire planet. Because you would watch all movies and anime like your high and not recall much but what you saw. I got a brain so ill use it and if i see bs well i see it. If we watched everything like brainless ppl its true we can be enjoying gunpoint , robberies and even people ripping you off and setting you up. But why would you? That is more so Naive then anything. Logic exist so there for scaling does to make sense of something. Scaling is even used in a different form from Computer chips. Ps1 - Ps4 and so on. You got Pistols then Ak-47's and then the Minigun. That itself right there was power scaling. Its unavoidable its just rather you want to be a non thinker or a thinker.

Virgo you are taking it far too serious. Yes DBS has some inconsistencies but so did DBZ starting with the Android saga. How come 17 and 18 are suddenly stronger then super saiyans when Dr. Gero said he did need data from Zfighters fighting on Namek? I loved DBS for the great choreography some episodes has and not for certain amount of powerlevels some characters should have. That would ruin the show and all its drama around it. Dragonball in essence is a Martial Arts based show and not a powerlevel based show.

Scaling matters to debates but to story its common sense that shouldn't need to be explained. Its really annoying when added attention is given to it. The suvival arc was unbearable with this. Whis and krillin treat me like i was 3 and take away the momentum of the story and fights. But people who ignore scaling are baise for debates. Not in the context of a story!(i hope)

What I think people don't get is that power scaling without narrative flow or visual representation is absolutely arbitrary. You brought up multiple series that are doing completely different things. Say, for example, OPM. They're making fun of the concept of power scaling while also establishing a basic understanding of the tension meant to be conveyed. But they're intentionally inconsistent. They made the monster ranking system flexible, but also unreliable. A weak monster can still be dragon level with the right tech, intelligence, ability, or circumstances. It says nothing about their power. For Naruto, the ninja rankings don't say anything about power, but narrative expectations for the audience and characters. But, again, they always defy them since the very start. For Marvel and DC, those are meant to show the threat of a situation, sure, but what people don't understand is that it's not always a slug fest with these stories. These characters are usually an exaggeration of some aspect of people, a culture, or the protagonists. They're that size as a personal challenge. The writers are usually aware of how ridiculous just stating a power level is. For DB, it survives only because it keeps amping up powers by statements only. The narrative of the franchise is basically "might makes right, and relevant". That's why people don't like it. That's especially why people don't like seeing irrelevant people being scaled to ridiculous levels. People subconsciously respond to the narrative in a way that isn't as present in other series. Goku is forgiven for being a villain (he basically is one. Well, he's more of an anti-villain; he automatically opposes villains, but his behavior is still like that of a villain in that he always pursues greater power at any cost) simply because he's powerful and has great "potential" or he's a "prodigy". Those are narrative speak for "I can't think of any other reason he's as strong or important as he is". People used to hate Beerus. They hated that he was so strong and so outwardly careless of people's lives. They couldn't stand that Goku couldn't surpass him. I loved it. Not because I hate Goku, but because that was a challenge they couldn't punch into submission. He was the most nuanced character at the time. He was immortal, all powerful, and exercised his power and status to get things that made life worth living, or allowed to live I should say. He was what the narrative message was building up to. That ultimately, strength is the greatest arbiter of morality and justice. He made the heroes and villains simultaneously correct. If nobody noticed, this is why Gohan was seen as a terrible person, even if he did everything we were meant to see as good traits. The problem came when the narrative became too explicit. Gohan and others _had_ to be caught up as soon as possible if they were going to be relevant and heroic. Enemies had to in order to be imposing, or to seek like they mattered. Nobody would've cared about Cabba if it wasn't for the fact that Vegeta was going to be a father figure to him, the one that instilled the "might makes right" ideas into him. They didn't like it when new, random saiyins showed up and challenged the unchallengeable. Kefla was expected to be nuanced and such because she challenged the status quo, that Goku was the strongest. She shook our foundation that he was the best based on his strength. Jiren was even worse. He was loved _and_ hated for his power. People flocked to him like he was made of honey, and others jumped back. But, alas, he too became an explicit advertiser of "might makes right". What I'm saying is that judging by how fans react when that narrative becomes explicit, we can see why people hate power scaling. We do vs debates because it's really a "who's the best?" contest. DB's entire story is that, which is why it's always being challenged. When you start telling us characters we don't like at all are stronger than our favorites, we have negative reactions because you're saying they're secretly better (not in actuality, of course). That's why people feel weird when you say a random kid's show has characters technically more powerful, or when you say a poorly written series has stronger characters as a general rule. It feels cheap and too on the nose. This is a long comment to say that power scaling sounds like a cheap way to make uninteresting characters relevant to people that don't want to hear about them. It's not that they don't think it's happening, we all know it is. It's just really cheap in DB. They can just say characters are stronger than before and have all fights look like two old guys slapping each other, and we'd be expected to believe it. It's not used as a narrative tool to increase tension, it _is_ the narrative. That's all anyone ever hears about DB and they don't like it.

dang man you made a long comment but it made it sound pretty close to correct but sometimes you do need power scaling but it’s only needed for anything that involves which character is stronger in a certain series but as for anything else it’s not really needed like for example if a character is good or not power scaling isn’t needed for that because a character is only good if it has a good character base like a good personality, or anything else you know?

One thing that causes power scaling to fall apart is when different abilities and techniques that aren't necessarily indicative of power are shown off. Like Krillin's Destructo Disc is said to be able to cut through anything (the scene with Cell tanking it in the anime is filler), meaning that unless stated otherwise, Krillin could use that technique to cut any enemy in half. But in terms of actual battle power, Krillin is nowhere near the levels of some of the enemies he uses the attack on. Or with Tien and the Kikoho attack. Tien's actual battle power is never anywhere near Nappa or Cell during those sagas, but the Kikoho holds Semi-Perfect Cell at bay and is stated to have had the potential to kill an unguarded Nappa even though we know Tien doesn't measure up to them in power. Or how it was stated in the Raditz fight that the Kamehameha and Special Beam Cannon focus power into single points without being indicative of Goku and Piccolo's actual battle powers. So yeah. It's important to have scaling and tiers and whatnot. But when techniques can be vasty stronger or have more utility than the ones using them, then it shows that regardless of tiers, strategy and technique can be just as important, if not more so.

@@Zanjibro Sigh, I made this comment a year ago when every Dbz KZfaqr made videos weekly talking about power-levels because they all know it's an easy way to get views. And I wrote it cause it was annoying to see it on my feed all the time because when you watch DBZ clips on KZfaq you get recommended to content creators because the KZfaq algorithm just does that. Even when you say that you don't want to see certain channels, KZfaq will still recommend them. It's the reason I can't block Mr Beast because he's associated with Meat Canyon by key-words. It's not hard to get views talking about powerscaling because the typical fan of Dbz ranges from the new kids at age 10, to people who are in their late 40s holding onto their nostalgia of the series. And this topic will never die because there's this obsession with "knowing" who's the the most powerful character and by what margin etc. I think it's stupid, no offense. Nothing against Chuck and how you guys make your money, but you guys know you're beating a dead horse. I know you make somewhere between 50-100g a year doing it so good on you. I just don't want any part of it and at the time my recommended feed is flooded with channels like this I want no part of. It's not really your fault just KZfaq's algorithm. I've actually stopped watching Dbz content on KZfaq and now my feed is mostly work related content. So I'm good now. If you want me to apologize then fine, I'm sorry for saying it doesn't matter. Power scaling matters because of all the reasons you stated in your video. Now hopefully we're all square. I was alerted about this comment today.

DBZ doesn't do this very well at all. It almost completely relies on statements because the show doesn't have the characters do anything new. Their level of destruction doesn't change based off how strong they are. dragon ball feats almost never grow into anything bigger or badder they fight at the same intensity (visually) the entire show. so its not wonder people fail to scale them correctly...its the shows fault

No it isn't, because the whole had explained to the audience that the characters can focus a lot of energy in very small points, therefore they don't cause collateral damage. Scaling exists in everything because all scaling does is use scientific logic and facts, with a bit of common sense, to find a character’s power based on feats and statements. So you can’t really win against science no matter how much you wanna believe a character isn’t as strong as science says he/she is lol.

PikUpYourPantsPatrol the writers of the shows themselves use science when making a character perform a feat or giving a statement. This is especially true within DC comics. Literally the only way to scale a character’s power is to use science and common sense. You can’t do it any other way. Scientists in fact I’m sure absolutely love shows like this because they’re nerds just like us and they more than anyone would love to calculate the power required to do so and as well as going into scientific theories when a character becomes that powerful and starts going into dimensional territory and talking about other universes and all that good stuff. This is literally what scientists dream about...you sir couldn’t be more wrong in your entire life

@HossLUK
@HossLUK 6 жыл бұрын
Epic Style Gamer not really. When a character is stated to be above that feat and is clearly above that feat then that is when the actual story needs to be considered over the scientific logic of the character’s power vs the feat. If the actual scientific logic in regards to the actual power of the character would ruin the story then the author will choose to override everything in order to keep the story flowing and on the right track. This does not mean a universal stated character getting hurt by falling rocks puts that character down to rock level, it just means it’s better for the story. And if the author himself states a character’s power is weaker than what is shown then obviously “ death of the author” comes into play. Power scaling is always useful in just about every situation. It uses those feats along with statements and logical calculations to make sense of the facts behind a character’s power.

Jono 84 there’s no inconsistencies with statements but obviously with feats. But if you use common sense and logic then it’s very easy to see the truth behind why the writer/writers chose to make a certain situation happen. Power scaling doesn’t create the stories, it helps bring common sense and logical facts that people wouldn’t see when just simply watching it and looking at feats alone. You can’t blame power scaling for bad writing/ a writer who chooses to override the character’s power in order to make a better story.

The problem with scaling in DBZ is that it creates power levels that are unfathomable and unsupported by what the characters actually do on screen/page. According to scaling Goku should be quintillion times faster than light, yet, we see Bulma actively following Golden Frieza's and SSB Goku's fight during ROF. According to scaling just one Ki blast from Ultra Instinct Goku should be powerful enough to vaporize every universe within the DB Multiverse. Nothing he's done supports that level of power. Scaling matters, yes, but it's a slippery slope consider the ridiculous powers of these characters.

@KirbyJet14
@KirbyJet14 3 жыл бұрын
While I agree, Goku in all reality would be millions of times faster than light. This is explained by Seth how dragonballs Lightspeed is actually different from ours and this explains why power scaling is indeed important in this type of situation. Goku and his verse is only a thousand times the speed of light in Super Saiyan God because this is that speed when he said that he was increasingly speed thousand for every single second, and Goku kept up with him fairly easily. We actually calculate where Goku is in all reality, it would be true that he is millions of times faster than light. We can use this because there's a theory that supported but I'm not going to go into that as of yet. Seth has already made a video on how fast is Goku and he explains this. the reason why the destruction levels are so incoherent is because key control. Toriyama has stated this in three interviews and I have scanned for each and every single one of them. He goes to explain how they can control their power and no matter. This might not make sense but it's still true and saying it doesn't make sense it's incoherent with the with the author said. Fiction isn't the same as reality and this is why the scaling is not so bad even if they don't have feats to match it. I do agree that it's a little back and forth with power scaling but once you get the grip of power steering, you can logically explain it without any difficulty. The only reason power scaling is confused with being confusing or being completely irrelevant because people don't understand it or don't want to understand it Because it seems too hard with the mathematical numbers and what not. This makes people in their mind seem so dumb and makes them to a lower when that's not actually not the case, people are just doing what they like but then other people are feeling lower or because of it, it's the wrong idea that power scaling gives off that affects a lot of people like this. it's usually natural human reaction to get mad when somebody displays higher intelligence because that is a sign of superiority which insults the complex of the mind, then this is a defense mechanism like insulting or discrediting with somebody does. Do natural human reaction that is based off of normal instinct.

For example a fast character can go comic and a character fly to Pluto in 1 second get still be under wind speed? That means that that character in our reality if we compare it is multiple times faster than light. We basically use our reality as a baseline the scale of the characters, whether there is not an inference to reality or not, we still can use any speed Feats or whatnot to inference them on our power range.

The problem with power scaling in Dragon Ball and in Fiction in general, is that in the end a character is as strong as the author say they are at the time they are writing them. All you best calculations and speculation go out the window next episode when the character needs to be at a different level. maybe there's a case to be made for power scaling a finished works, but power scaling an on going series is like trying to guess the flavor of the week. there is no consistency in Dragon Ball especially.

Scaling is fine but when you try to make sense of nonsensical bs the story throws at you and tries to weave it in you’re in for a bad time. 1) trying to “scale” the universe “busting” quaking punches Beerus and Goku shared. 2)trying to make sense of how useless Blue Kaioken’s 10x or 20x multiplier. (Here’s a hint, it’s anime exclusive so don’t bother thinking too hard on it)

Vegeta that’s a literal quotation from Geekdom101, the anime is nothing but FujiTV and Toei’s bastard child.

Scaling in Dragon Ball is a must have if you’re talking about god level beings fighting against mortals and whatnot so it’s really important. People don’t think it’s important because they’re too lazy to scale or to ignorant to accept that Scaling even matters in a show like this
