In this video, I discuss why I think Puss in Boots: The Last Wish's ending is perfect, and for that, I discuss the characters that made up the movie: Puss in Boots, Goldilocks, Kitty Softpaws, Jack Horner, Death (the Wolf) and ofcourse the adorable Perrito.
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is a movie starring Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Harvey Guillen, Florence Pugh, Wagner Moura and John Mulaney (as voice actors ofcourse) and is directed by Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado.
I hope you enjoy and if you've got any feedback or thoughts on the video, feel free to let me know.
Chapters:
0:00 - Intro
0:28 - Puss in Boots
3:36 - Goldilocks
4:56 - Kitty Softpaws
5:37 - Jack Horner
7:32 - Death(the Wolf)

@@TheMovieConnoisseur_ Of course the ending is perfect, because it plays a big part in the hero's journey. All the build up leading to the destination, and it becomes the perfect resolution to the story. Some people say they should've destroyed the star before Puss confronted Death, but I say that kinda ruins the point. Puss confronts Death before destroying the star, because they have to show how far he's gotten to grow as a character, and how he doesn't need the wish to prove his point. Sometimes I'll never understand why people couldn't learn about how character arcs work.

I don't think that Jack Horner was just there for laughs or as a traditional bad villain only, he is also a continuation of the theme of not appreciating what you have can cause you to have resentment and jealousy of others. Purreto, although he dose not have a loving family or a home still appreciates the little things that he has while Jack Horner doesn't appreciate any of what he has oral he has plenty.

*Perrito = Spanish word for "Little dog". In Spanish we have words called "Diminutives" that add the termination "-ito" / "-ita" ("i" replaces any vowel at the end if there's one) to refer to something in a sweet and familiar way. Sorry, just making a correction but my inner teacher can't help himself uwu"

I like to think that he serves as an important lesson to kids that some bad guys are just straight-up irredeemable and people like him are guys you shouldn't even bother with. I also like the nuance that his twisted nature still came from a happy background and stable life as not all bad guys are sympathetic morally-grey characters.

The Goldilocks part particularly made me tear up. Like the lyric “if you love me let me go”, Mama bear doing exactly that when understanding Goldi’s motives. I think that was one of the hardest hitting parts, absolutely crushing, yet she pushed on to see it happen. The ending wrapping it all up was like a breath after surfacing from deep water, relief, and the oh so wholesome and beautiful outcome. I really liked the dynamic showing how much the bears, especially mama bear, love Goldi as a their own child. It was more than being accepted but, accepting back on Goldi’s part. Some people will spend a lifetime blind to the riches that lay infront of them. Mix that with the Puss and Softpaws love arc, dang it got me a touch melty. All these wishes granted without even needing to rely on the star.

I also really liked the way that during the final showdown, when everyone's going for the wish, Mama Bear doesn't say it's "Our" wish. She says it's Goldi's wish. Like any good mom, she'll do anything to make sure her baby girl is happy, even if it tears her heart in two.

When Goldie admitted her true reason for persuing the wish, and then her family STILL supported her and helped her go after it, thats when they PROVED they were her real family. I expected a dramatic argument or a falling out. But they supported her to persue her happiness even if it was not something they necessarily agreed with personally. That's when I knew, the only thing for her to do is recognize them as her true family.

I think one of the aspects of Jack Horner that should've been touched on is the fact that unlike the other characters who decided to give up the wish and instead learning that what they have is more than enough, Jack had everything he needed, and decided to throw it away because he was jealous and greedy, Jack threw away family, friends, wealth, and eventually his life, things that the other characters were looking for.

I definitely think there's something to Perrito and Jack as opposites. If you think about it most of the characters are antiheroes that are to caught up in their own emotional issues to deal with the actual villain that's an existential threat to them all. Without magic all the talking animal characters lose their sentience, Goldie becomes an orphan, and even Death wouldn't get to be a hunky wolf anymore. Perrito is the only true hero that selflessly helps everyone else until they complete their character arcs and all team up to stop Jack.

It is debatable if the talking animals can talk because magic or just because this is a fairy tale world. Or if they would become normal animals again Same for Death, I dont think he operates on magic. But still, if Jack gets all magic, it still is game over for everyone, specially the guys that have gone around all movie getting on his way, so it is still valid to say Jack is an inminent threat

I agree that Death is my favorite antagonist of the movie, but I feel like Jack's one dimensional nature is absolutely... nessecary, I guess? He doesn't need to be overly complicated with goldilocks and Death running about, and he serves s the ultimate physical force of the movie, so engorged with evil he is beyond redemption. So evil he's funny, and something to fall back to when it comes to progressing the narrative, and who the antagonist is. I loved him in the movie due to that, in a movie full of extesentialism and themes of belonging, family and what matters in life hes just unapologetically unaffected by that. A force of nature in himself that we can shake our fists to, and as you said, a breath of fresh air from the mood that prevails this film otherwise. Also he has his own thematic revelance given his blatant disregard of life, not in that he wastes his own but wastes the lives of others.

Jack and Joker are similar though. The important thing with Jack is that there is no sympathy for him. Some people are just bad, and have no want or desire to be a better person. They simply want for their own and will harm anyone and anything to get what they want with no care and perhaps taking enjoyment in the suffering of others.

Yep, and I think it is also one of the important lessonss for childern - some people are bad not because of their backstory or problems, but just because of greed or powerhunger. Those people exist in real life, and there are usualy not going to change, no matter how you try.

You definitely make a good point, thing with the joker is that there have been so many adaptations, so I don't want to be picking and choosing the one that fits my argument, but I always saw the joker as this broken character, and you can see that in the movie 'the joker', it ofcourse doesn't make what he has done okay, but just makes him more complex. Also, you can see the joker's motivations as wanting to expose the insanity in the world, bring out the worst in people, which is the opposite of batman tries to do ofcourse, which is to inspire, this conflict is much more compelling. Even though again you are right, just like Alfred in the dark knight said 'some men just want to watch the world burn' and the joker is definitely that.

Unlike our protagonist. Just be a horrible person your whole life. Sleep around. Get drunk. Be stupid. And while you do so, become a shady assassin who works for gold - just an upstanding citizen... Just don't fear death, and you will be immortal. What a good thing to teach kids with our protagonist! (Note: That's not how the portrayal of "Death" works. Death, as a character, was invented by the brothers Grimm - it's in his name "Grim reaper". He's a human (or humanoid skeleton) that harvests the souls of the dead - he doesn't "kill". So why is this "death" a furry? All other human characters in Shrek are also fantasy ideals and ideas, so why isn't he? Because "cats fear dogs"... wow, enlightening.) - The contrast to that is Jack Horner in this movie. A guy who is bad and nobody likes, because... err... he didn't have adventures with an ogre in a better movie series? I mean Puss clearly killed in his life plenty of times, he's a known assassin who takes lives for money. How is he so different?

@@revisit8480 Where did you get the idea that Puss is a shady assassin? Only thing that comes to mind is his introduction in Shrek 2, but there he comes across less as a "shady assassin" that would do anything for gold and more of a bounty hunter that still has a solid or mostly solid moral code. In the fight with the giant, when it takes the kid, you can clearly see he is worried about him before he starts fighting. He wouldnt cause problems just so he could fix them and get praise. He IS a hero, the issue is that being one has made him very arrogant, but not an awful guy. He wouldnt take just any live. In fact, I dont think we have seen him kill anyone! Not saying he hasnt at any point, just that he doesnt go around killing left and right. Jack, meanwhile, treats everyone as disposable tools and cares about no one, only seeking to become stronger at all costs. He is even aware that of what he is doing and just doesnt care. When faced with his mistakes, Puss slowly starts to question how he lives his life. Jack laughs at the face of character growth. How can you even compare the two unironically? Also "Just don't fear death and you will be inmortal"... what? The movie literally tells you that you cant beat or escape death. Puss says that he knows this is the case. Death tells Puss that they WILL meet again, and Puss says he is aware. How is that inmortality, my guy? This is without mentioning your flawed note on Death's character of course

One thing I do also find important to note is, 2 of the 3 villain groups don't feel like the villain to Puss or Kitty, but Perrito. Death obviously is only out for Puss, but Goldilocks and Perrito both being orphan's links her connection to the story right back to Perrito who never had any family. And Jack having all in live he could ask for and turning evil is a direct contrast to Perrito not having anything and still choosing to be happy with what little he has. We are experiencing the story through Puss' eyes, but the adventure, as the map mostly revolving over Perrito's path, is about Perrito. It is his story on how he gains the trust of Kitty, helps support Puss with his mortality fears and help Goldi accept the family she has, not wish for one she hasn't

I can't get enough of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish videos, always happy to see people praise it. One more thing I would like to add is that many people think of Death as a character who was there solely to reform Puss, with good intentions and all that. I don't agree with that interpretation. In the last scene you can see Death cursing at himself for playing with his food, which directly confirms the fact that Death didn't have any good intentions to begin with. He was merely entertaining himself before takin Puss's last life in an act that he also admitted was "cheating". He was more of an involuntary catalyst for Puss's positive change in character. He could've very well become a villain if the plot took a different, more tragic route.
@TheMovieConnoisseur_

I definitely agree, with your interpretation, although he was 'cheating', if he weren't confined to certain rules and principles, the ending could've been different for sure, but that's why he's interesting, he does have a 'code' even if his intentions aren't pure

The one thing I think may lead to something powerful in the upcoming Shrek movie is that I believe that death cut the rope to that bell that fell on Puss. I think he did this to lead up to their final confrontation. What I think could happen in Shrek 5 is that something causes Shrek to "die" and Puss makes the ultimate sacrifice to bring him back. Whether death takes him up on that offer could be the key to the movie's success.

If they ever decide to expand on this I am hoping they dive more into Kitty's character. Next to Perrito's her backstory is probably the most tragic, but unlike Perrito it's part of the reason she has trust issues, she's also lived a life long before meeting Puss which causes me to wonder if there is a deeper motivation behind her not showing up at Santa-Coloma for a reason other than Puss being so arrogant and self-absorbed.

My friend raised a point when we watched it together that the ending _could_ have been improved. She said that because the wish represents an "unattainable ideal", they should never have reached the star in the first place, or even have known it was real. She said it was unnecessary for them to actually confirm the existence of the wish or the star in order for them to complete their arcs; they could have realized that they had already gotten their wishes and decided to go home, as the wish no longer matters at that point. However, I did not fully agree, as reaching the star (not only made for a beautifully animated sequence but also) served to demonstrate exactly what and how much they were willing to sacrifice in order to go back to their old lives without the wish and embrace what they had. They had to get a real chance at the wish to PROVE (to show, not tell) that they really didn't feel they needed it. I do think my friend had a valid point, but taking into account the medium (in a live action movie, the ending would have been hard to pull off without a big budget; in animation anything is possible so its a good call to take advantage of any opportunities for showing off that magic) and the target audience (children have less patience for "the treasure was the friends we made along the way lets forget about the magical glowy thing and pack up and go home; because kids see things more objectively and can have difficulty understanding the underlying themes and nuance if it isn't demonstrated to them).

Your friend makes a very good point, and it would've been interesting to see it actually, but I think I agree with you in that the point might've been lost with a big portion of the audience, and the ending sequence we got was pretty good, I don't see them topping it off.

Not often do you see a flawless execution of a full length feature film, especially animated. They come along, once in a decade or two, but this was the shocker of the last decade. I'm naturally a rewatcher. I'd rather rewatch a movie I like instead of looking for something new to watch. And, every once in a while, I'll watch something new, either because it's interesting, I've heard good things about it, or it's something that I've been looking forward to for a while. This flew under the radar, I legitimately didn't know about it until a few weeks ago. One thing that has me pondering: Since Puss regains all organs, bones and etc whenever he dies... has Kitty never died?

It may be similiar to how Kenny for southpark is revived. Whenever and however he died he always wakes up in his bed like nothing happened. Yet he remebered everything unlike his friends who somehow forgets about his death.
@Kattlarv
@Kattlarv Жыл бұрын
@@kraftik5300 With Puss however, we know this is not true. He remembers. Everyone else remembers. He is revived with a fully functional body he had before he died. Hence: If Kitty died, would her claws be regained?

7:24 exactly Jack Horner needed to be pure evil, with many antagonists trying to be redeemable, it’s a too many stories at once. It’s not a tv show, a movie only needs its plot, doesn’t really need a B plot, but the B plot here was Goldilocks, and the main antagonist being Death itself, so we needed a one dimensional pure evil character, to simply just hate and laugh at

Obviously one dimensional villains isn't good, but how you said, being it a breath of fresh air is what makes him good in this movie. Plus, he is not the antagonism of the story, Death is, which that's why he being a one dimensional villain doesn't hurt the story, he is not the driving antagonist force, he's there just to fulfill the role of a true villain in the story in standard storytelling, since Death isn't.

When people say its a kids movie, that doesn't mean adults cant enjoy it and that its exclusively for kids, its just that a bigger than normal proportion of the audience are kids, plus the concepts and the plot in the film are comprehensible to them. nobody is coming at you for enjoying puss in boots, I personally loved the movie

Ze ending wass peffect. Ze cat didn't fear death, so the cat, who hates mondays, became immortal. TAKE THAT DEATH. See kids? All you have to do is be a trash person your whole life and not fear death - he will leave you alone. Who cares what other's think of you, just be a trash person! - Of course Goldilock and the bears had a good development. They are the best written characters.
@TheMovieConnoisseur_
@TheMovieConnoisseur_ Жыл бұрын
your logic is flawed, you say that Goldilocks and the bears are the best written characters and that they had good development, when they were also 'trashy' people. You refuse to acknowledge the good development of Puss because he is 'trashy'? A character still posessing flaws at the end of a movie doesn't discredit his character arc. Which is why as you correctly noted in mentioning Goldilocks but ignored in Puss for some reason, Puss is still well developed even if he isn't the moral equivalent of Holy Mary.
