You exaggerate how unattractive you are without makeup, as all American women do. Actually, You're not a beast without makeup. In fact as the guy hangs out with you, over time he become more attracted to you as he gets to know you more.

Awww I think you look really pretty without it! :-D I was hoping to find like... a historical study of why this even started and why only women wear make-up these days though. Because it's so frustrating. I'm always told (by men, women never seem to say these things...) that I look great without make-up, etc, etc... and yet I still feel half naked if I go outside without at least mascara. To me it feels like... well, like sports... where everyone is taking steroids, so to even compete, you have to do it too. And it sucks.

Let it be said that I cannot think of a single man that I know who likes makeup on a woman. The irony is that by putting on makeup and not allowing your skin to breathe and remove toxins that it will probably look worse in the long-run. The best way to keep your skin looking wonderful is cardio - not a gentle walk but something that will make you sweat.
@LaAnimeKHsoraXkairi

She's giving us the wrong impression. Like more makeup makes you more successful? No. Some girls don't need much makeup because they don't have very many BLEMISHES on their face. makeup is only for covering up blemishes and to look more clean or attractive for certain events. NOT FOR EVERY DAY!!! Unless you've actually got some permanent blemish or freaky features. But i'm not saying that there's only one kind of pretty feature. many different types of facial features can be pretty. some are just.... no.... and if you don't want to be presenting yourself in the way that certain feature makes you look, it would be best for you to shade and highlight a bit. SOME girls put on so much makeup that their face looks like a birthday cake!! And that's NOT good.... Birthday cake face looks quite sluttish. :/ You know, that one girl that's dated every single guy and slept with everyone. There IS such thing as natural beauty and also such a thing as natural unattractiveness.

Plenty of women believe that men are handsome without any make-up, right? So why can't we believe the same about women? No, it has to be more complex and the problem lies that women invest, to a varying degree, too much of their self-confidence in make-up and clothes. How wrong is that? Instead of focusing on developing their intellect, some women think that all they need is make-up and a fancy dress. How delusional.
@JannaBanana552

Women who do not wear some sort of cosmetics to work are perceived as less professional and put together. Also, a patriarchal society made the beauty=love/success standard, so dudes telling us that they prefer no makeup just adds more pressure and does not fix the problem, because women should not feel that they need others to approve of their looks. That said, I now wear makeup because I love how it makes me feel and look-it's not for anyone but me.

I believe every woman has the right to use whatever she wants. Make up, no make up, it's their decision and other people's opinions don't matter. They dress for themselves. But I really think it is a bit sad how we are all educated (especially women) to be self deprecating. I don't see any of the flaws she mentions in the video. She looks absolutely beautiful without makeup and this video gives me the hibbie jibbies while I watch her criticizing her own face, when I don't see any - ANY - issue with it. Guess I also have my own flaws that only I notice (like everyone), and I also criticize myself, but this videos rings the bell that we should all love ourselves a little more and compare ourselves less with these unreasonable beauty standards.

I kinda upsets me that people seem to adhere to the notion that no makeup is best for women and we are all stupid idiots for wearing makeup. There is a cold string of irony that runs through many of the comments that actually backs up a lot of what is said in the video; women's value lies only in their outside beauty (whether this is natural or achieved through makeup). Personally I find people most beautiful when they're funny and intelligent, what's that got to do with makeup?

most women are not aware of this success and makeup connection. If a guy were to wear fake abs under his shirt, and contour his arms to make his biceps look bigger women would say he is an insecure jerk who is trying to manipulate them through false pretenses, and of he were to lie about his income or status then he would be labelled as a creep. That's exactly what makeup is, its a lie, you don;t really look like that, your not really as tall as those high heels make you, push up bras to make your boobs look bigger, its all a lie and yes it really is a form of manipulation....

evi v yes but we do not know what a girl looks like without makeup even if we know 100 per cent that she is in fact wearing it, the whole point of make up is to present yourself in a manner that is not truly the case!!! As I pointed out, if guys were to present themselves in such a false manner they would be labelled as pathetic and manipulative, trying to get girls to sleep with them under a false pretense... And yes I am very familiar with the correct distinction between yours/you're etc however I type every quickly and briefly, often times on my iphone and the message is of more importance than the precise exact spelling in an informal scenario such as youtube and I find grammar nazis to be shallow, pedantic and unnecessarily annoying in a context in which they are not genuine but merely trying to point out spelling flaws to gain further ground in the argument etc.. don't you wish you could just type uninhibited without having to worry about every single spelling/grammar error within your phrase??? Well you are among the crowd who prevents that from happening....;. thanks

IT's really not supposed to be all about the outward appearance. I remember growing up that I was not allowed to wear make up. My mother and even my grandmother never wore it unless they were going to dinner or some sort of party/special occasions. I remember begging my mother to let me use her make up and her saying that I wasnt old enough. I never thought of makeup as something to cover my "flaws". I never thought that my own face wasn't enough. Do I wear makeup now? Yes and much the same way that my grandmother and mother did before me. Like an accessory to finish an outfit for special occasions. I do sometimes wear it for fun though I like to play with it and see what kind of looks I can achieve. When I do that its for me though. I'll sit n front of a mirror trying out whatever comes to mind and then flop on the couch n my pajamas and watch and tv lol. I feel bad that some women can't view makeup as fun and instead view it as an annoying part of their daily routine that allows them to be presentable to the rest of the world. You are worth so much more than that.

…You look better without make-up…in case you didn't know. Like most women, you don't know how to apply make-up to make it look good (that red lipstick, eye-liner & mascara aren't doing it for you), either that or make-up never looks good. If the "beauty premium" exists, then why do women wear make-up when they looked better without it? I think you're wrong. Women wear make-up to fit in & not draw too much attention to themselves (they don't like standing out).

I wear makeup for the fun of it. It gives me that pop of color that I don't have in my clothes, because I don't like to bring attention to myself very much. I don't need it, and I don't wear that often. But girls, here's my opinion. It's not good to rely on makeup to boost your self esteem every time you walk out your front door. Natural beauty is one of the best things that a person has. Your personality is usually what people are drawn to, not your looks. You are unique, and though you can change color schemes and whatnot, makeup is not. It's mass produced (sometimes unethically) and basically the same as every other product. So why be the same as everyone else and fake, rather than be yourself and different?

What is up with these comments? Cristen is not trying to say she looks better or worse with make up - just explaining why she wears it and what may go into the choice some women make by wearing it. She even says that is would be wonderful if she could not wear make up and feel the same way about her self. If you do or don't wear make up it should not matter - it is not lies - that is how you choose to portray yourself. Much like your clothes, hairstyle and everything else you manipulate about your appearance and character- that is okay and that is you. Not everyone has the same way of portraying themselves and that's awesome. No one has the same preferences for partners or friends, also. There is nothing wrong with preferring a partner that portrays themselves in a certain manner (ie not wearing make up) - but you must acknowledge that is this your opinion and is not universal. To say that all people should not wear make up because you personally do not find it attractive is a hella fucked up thing to say (ie some people totally dig neck stretching - but we can all see how globally this is not everyone's cup of tea). If you want a partner that does not wear make up - go date someone who does not, don't tell people who do wear make up that they shouldn't - because how attractive you perceive them is not really as important as you think it is.

I don't wear make up and still have a job where everyone take me seriously and my boyfriend said he's glad he doesn't see a different person in bed when he wakes up in the morning. In my opinion, the only thing you should do for your appearance, both men and women, is to maintain a healthy skin (through healthy eating, exercise and cleansing cosmetics), and remove body and facial hair. .... Also I'm too lazy to bother =P Scribbling on my face for 10 minutes every day is 10 minutes of wasted life daily.

Actually, without the makeup, I can see your features more clearly, especially your eyes. You look really gorgeous with makeup on as well, but you shouldn't feel hideous without it. But When all the other girls started wearing makeup at school; I was not allowed to do so. My mom said that a girl should not use it until she is 16. I guess I missed the bus on the whole makeup thing because now I'm 26 and only wear makeup for costume reasons. Cosplay and stage plays... Never in my normal every day life. Like you she has a negative self-image when it comes to her face without makeup but I love seeing the true beauty beneath the mask. If you need to wear makeup at work to strengthen your profile then so-be-it if that's how you feel but I think that when it comes to the world in general you should always endeavour to be yourself in every way.

I am ridiculously near-sighted. I literally can't put on any makeup that has to go under my glasses except mascara. (seriously, two inches between my face and the mirror isn't enough room for a triangle, let alone a brush or pencil). So I don't bother with anything (though I could still wear lipstick and mascara). But I'm wondering if this is across different fields, or only the business jobs. Do women in the STEM fields who wear makeup also come across as more competent? Have there been studies dissecting whether or not it's job specific? I'm looking to go into programming, where it's possible I might get jobs without ever showing my face. That's a plus, right?

as someone who listens to daytime talkshows during his breaks on the regular, I've been given to assume a lot of the purpose of makeup is to make you seem more "awake and refreshed." considering that you have really dark hair, eyebrows, and bambi eyes, and a paler complexion, there's plenty enough contrast in your face, even if you don't have the eyelash makeup. in short, you can survive without if you wanted to, of course, you don't represent all women forever, so that's something to consider.

But I'm also the MUA that flat out refuses to leave the house all done up, as I like to explain it 'ain't nobody got time for that!' Which isn't exactly true, I just don't make time for it for me. But I think it is because of the Beauty Premium. I am not part of that upper portion of beautiful women (according to societal standards), nor will I ever be, so I am not going to waste my time trying to be. Doesn't mean that I don't wear makeup ever, but that's usually when I got to do beauty makeups for clients, girls' night out, or parties with friends. I feel more pressure to look nice or my friends then I do for strangers.

OR it's as simple as I genuinely enjoy makeup. I wear it because the time applying it is my zen time. I love trying out new techniques and products. It's a world full of fun colors and possibilities. I wear makeup because I darn well want to.

i wear makeup but not because I feel like i have too and can't go out with out something on my face. I like make up because I view it as an artistic outlet. I like to wear multiple colors of eye-shadow at once. Heck i will even make different animal prints or rainbow look if feel like it. Hey maybe I look crazy but it makes me happy because i think it is fun.. I do have those days where i don't want to spend the time making a pattern on my face so I just wash my face add moisturizer and be on my way. Either way ,colorful or natural I get compliments. I think makeup is like jewelry. You don't have to wear earrings and bracelets everyday but it is nice and pretty to look at.

I still think it's all between the ears. I do wear make-up when I wear costumes, but for everyday use I find it too much effort and too expensive. I don't even wear it for fancy dinners, even if my face isn't the clearest. Now, I do think that make-up can boost your confidence, but that's because you took extra effort to present yourself in a positive light, which in turn affects you psychologically and makes sure that you feel better about yourself, thus improving both your own and other people's opinion(s) about you. Still, it can get out of control and make sure that you don't even dare leaving the house without make-up on, which I find very worrying! Bottom line: For special occasions I don't mind, but if you ask me it's not a good idea for daily use.

The majority of my bosses and supervisors have been women. Most wore only light make up or none at all (as far as I could tell). You're an adult. It's your face, it's your money, and it’s your life. You call the shots. You choose to wear make up. It's your choice, own it. For what it’s worth, you look fine and don't need it.

I am so happy I didn't fall in to the "wear makeup every day because it will make your life easier" trap. My life is soooo much easier when all I have to worry about when I leave my apartment is if I put on my bra and that I don't have food stains on my shirt.

On a daily basis I don't wear makeup and I've never really felt the need to. I have makeup, and I'll wear it sometimes, when I go out or on some random days, and when I do feel particularly tired I'll wear a little mascara but that's about it. My mom never really wears makeup and I grew up with just her and brother so I don't think the pressure was ever as ingrained in me as happens to most people. Maybe it's because I don't wear it often, but I tend not to notice if other people's lack either.

I guess we should just consider ourselves lucky that men haven't started wearing makeup. That's not an arms race I want to participate in. I feel bad for all the women in the world who have to wear makeup just because they live in a society that expects them to. It's fine if it's something you want to do for you, if it makes you feel better or whatever, but it seems like a waste of time to force it on people. Like that one time in Brokeback Mountain where both guys get married and have kids.

You discussed the issue of makeup on the surface but you didn't touch on the fact that the reason most women wear makeup is not because they are aware of the beauty premium and want to take advantage of it but because the media makes women feel insecure and they have to attempt to compensate for that insecurity by wearing makeup. To demonstrate what I mean, if all women woke up tomorrow feeling 100% secure with their looks then that 18 billion dollar industry would go out of business overnight.

I think you are overdoing the makeup, both on the lipstick color and on the thickness of foundation coverage. Your eyes look good. I'm sure you've been told to wear "more" makeup on video than you do normally, but that statement oversimplifies. That foundation you are wearing is optically more dense than skin, so it's reducing the subsurface light scattering, which means we can't see how much hemoglobin you've got in your skin tissue. If anything is going to make you look like a vampire, that'd be it. You can tweak the foundation tint with rouge on your cheeks, but that's not going to rapidly change with lighting the way real skin will. On camera, don't worry about mustache hairs -- your camera just can't resolve them. Your eye makeup looks pretty good. Mascara increases contrast and helps your camera resolve lashes, and it needs a lot of help. Human eyeball: resolves 0.15mm at 3 feet, smooth analog time response, and we track out motion blur. Your video camera in this shot: resolves 1.6mm at your eye, quantized at 30 frames per second, several pixels of motion blur. The human is at least TEN TIMES BETTER. I agree that correctly applied makeup makes a woman appear competent, which is super valuable in the workplace. It's a dangerous game, though, because as you point out at 1:12, getting it wrong edges toward looking like a clown. The main thing that makes you look good (and you do look good) is contrast. Dark eyes and nice bright whites, wide smile with nice teeth, and you articulate both often and well. Keep it up.

1. She looks better without makeup. 2. Even without any makeup she looks overly made up. 3. I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that she's not doing any real work that adds value to society. 4. I doubt her daughters ever will either.

1. Agreed! 2. Might be because she wears too much makeup and isn't as tan as she might otherwise be. 3. Eh... 4. I wouldn't take that bet. Kids are wickedly unpredictable.
@DaviddesJ

I'm not claiming 100% but just playing the odds. I think that if you teach your kids that how they look is more important than what they know or what they can do, and especially if you teach them that the most important aspect of how they look is whether they are sexually desirable to men, that negative consequences from that are fairly predictable.

the only time i have ever had make-up on my face was with mary-kay lol and was so glad to get it off. never been taught how to put on make-up as my mother doesn't wear it either but i do sometimes envy the women who do wear it. why? because i think it's looks really pretty when done right but i run late too much (as in i get out the house at the very last second) to worry about that xD

I personally do not wear makeup often. I used to wear it daily for many years, but stopped about two years ago after realizing what an addiction it is. Yes, putting my not so perfect face out there used to be very stressful, and it sometimes still can be, but 1) I just do not see the true difference makeup has on my appearance 2) it is an expensive hobby 3) the makeup industry is very damaging to the planet (containers, ingredients, shipping).

In fact looking back in history man wore war paints in order to show power and strength. Man has had makeup for 100s of years and woman has too. The concept that woman need makeup to be confident is not that far off. We as humans have an automatic response to when feeling imperfect or exposed to cover it so is not to be taken advantage of. We do the same with cloths and saying were fine when were hurt. Its only human to cover flaws and show strength and confidence.
