Live Coverage: WI v. Chandler Halderson - Dismembered Parents Trial
Happening in Court:
Prosecution Opening Statement by William Brown
Defense Opening Statement by Catherine Dorl
A Wisconsin man stands trial for allegedly murdering and dismembering his parents without remorse, and providing false information on their disappearances. Chandler Michael Halderson, 23, faces charges including first-degree intentional homicide. Remains from his father Bart Halderson, 50, and mother Krista Halderson, 53, were found days apart, authorities said.
Defendant Halderson reported his parents missing July 7th, claiming they left their home in the Village of Windsor days before on the 1st. He told WISC-TV at the time that they were going to the village of White Lake, Wisconsin.
“My last message I got from them, they were going to White Lake for the Fourth of July,” he told “There are some festivities that go around there. Better drink prices at the bars. Stuff like that.”
He said that to his knowledge, they were then going to their cabin in Langlade County.
“Along the way, they could’ve stopped many places,” he said. “I wouldn’t know all of them.”
He was allegedly just feeding everyone lies.
Bart’s torso was found in rural Dane County, while remains from Krista were found in Sauk County and property run by the Department of Natural Resources, according to court documents obtained by The Wisconsin State Journal.
Their son had been searching Google for terms like “Body found Wisconsin,” “Woman’s body found in Wisconsin,” “Wisconsin dismembered body found,” and “Dead body found in Wisconsin,” authorities said. Investigators suggested Chandler Halderson used to a visit to property belonging to the partner of his girlfriend’s mother as cover to hide his father’s torso nearby. He had shot Bart Halderson at least once before dismembering him, officials said.
According to investigators, Halderson said after his arrest that “you don’t know the whole story,” and that he “didn’t feel bad about what I did.”

You know you are about the throw everything at the wall to see what sticks when your opening statement in 12 minutes long! 4:30 TS: she says he is the presumption of innocence and he is inno.. & stops then says please remember he has the presumption of innocence b/c she knows he is NOT innocent & can't say it! She NEVER says he IS innocent not once..... also says something like don't just assume or not presume he is innocent just b/c of not liking him or something to that effect but he should of taken that advice then they wouldn't be where they are if he used that principle!

This poor defense attorney has to go after one of the best opening statements I've ever heard...to defend someone obviously guilty. I imagine sitting there, listening to the prosecutor's opening statement, thinking about all the evidence, thinking "what. The. F. Why df won't my client take a damned plea, so I don't have to stand up here?! Is he aware that I'm a lawyer, not a wizard?" I do not envy her. (I'm aware that he has the presumption of innocence and I'm open to any and all evidence from this trial. However, I am not a jurist, just some bozo on KZfaq. But also...the evidence is just. So damning!)

@@davidhaney1394 there's no reason not to take it to trial because the sentence for murder in Wisconsin is guaranteed life without parole, so pleaing on it gets you nothing. Best to assert your rights and take it to trial However, any time you see a defense consisting of "Reasonable doubt is a high standard", it's a weak case. Their best move here was probably just to come out swinging on the GF

Opening statements. Prosecution: 1 hour 7 minutes. with visuals, a coherent narrative, painting the defendant a compulsive liar making his (possible) future testimony suspect. Defense: 13 minutes. No visuals, half the time spent talking about herself going to law school. Incoherent ramblings with the speech patter similar to someone on both Molly and Xanax. I already know the outcome of this case, but will continue to watch as this is way better than anything on TV or netflix Edit: around 1:25 ish is the exact moment chandler realizes his defense attorney is completely incompetent and he's going to jail for the rest of his life.

How about "You just heard an unbelievable, shocking horror story from the prosecutor! And that's it - unbelievable! My client is devastated. He worked with LE from day 1, got down to the department immediately after their request. Why would he do that if he is guilty?.... He did everything possible to help and find their beloved parents! Remember what my colleague told you? They renovated their house! Some work was done by Bart himself due to money issues. Bart was always tight with the money which caused friction......" Or qui bono? Follow the money, which could be further spun with the above, a loan shark, some alleged shady dealings he accidentally stumbled on due to his work. Or some intruders. Think a bit, there is always at least one good story (mustn't be true!) in every case! That's from the top of my head without any further thoughts! As his attorney I would have at least told a good story to get reasonable doubts! That's always possible! You only need 1 to get him off!!!!! At least give the jury something to think about! That's one step away from doubts and another little one from reasonable doubts!
@Horseymama1
@Horseymama1 Жыл бұрын
@@nobletarabas1 if he's your client then I understand your position that you must defend him. Personally, I have never seen a more guilty person in my entire life. Absolutely every arrow just pointed at him. If you followed the money, where did it lead? Why wasn't that brought up at trial? They were renovating their house, not sure what that proves as millions of people renovate their own house (I just built my own stable because ready made ones are too expensive) doesn't mean I'm tight with money, means if I can do it myself cheaper then why not. Even if Bart was tight with money, he was still looking after Chandler, his adult son.. housing him, feeding him etc. Where's the proof of Bart stumbling on shady dealings or loan sharks?. No intruders we're on the security cameras. Most people would be helpful and forthcoming to police to help cover up. If you didn't, I'm sure that would lol more suspicious. How did Christa's phone end up in the house, wrapped in foil in her shoe and put under a shelf, yet a phone call to chandler was made on it after she went misssing? Chandler was in the house pretty much the whole time, how did burnt skeletal remains get into the fireplace? The hidden gun, Bart's torso on the property of his girlfriends family, the tracker showing chandler in the place where parts of his mother were found. That's the bits off the top of my head. How would a loan shark know where to place all this evidence? I get he's your client and I respect your position but the proof of his innocence, (or even any doubt whatsoever) just isn't there. It just isn't. It was a very easy case for the prosecution.
@nobletarabas1
@nobletarabas1 Жыл бұрын
@@Horseymama1 I get your drift and I am all with you! My "task" however was to show how a normal defense lawyer easily could have argued to cast doubts. Yes, I could have thought of every little angle and I would have to come up with a "good story" which can hold a bit. It's possible with time, knowledge of the evidence, circumstances and a bit effort! His defense team did literally *NOTHING* and that is in my book more than negligence!!!! They got money for nothing and should be at least investigated if not be immediately disbarred!!!!

@@differenttakethanmost You misunderstand the role of defense attorneys. Their job isn't to be the ones who give then a fair trial. That job is given to the trial system at large. That's why we have a judge, a jury, a defense attorney, a prosecutor, rules, etc. The defense has an important part to play in that it needs to try and get the defendant of the hook. This is because the idea is that if a jury convicts a man despite the best efforts of a competent defense, then it gives credence to the fairness of the system. The goal of the adversarial legal system is to have each party check the amount of mistruth the other side can bring up.

Ace prosecutor William Brown gave a superb opening statement over an hour long, with visuals. This hapless defence attorney struggled to perform for around 13 minutes, and only helped Mr Brown confirm her client's guilt!
