Winter in a Van: Wood Stove Gourmet. Michael shows you how he turns his small wood stove into a pizza oven. As part of his ongoing 'Winter in a Van' series he also reflects on some pitfalls and shares tips for victory. It's really quite simple - keep your chimney clean, your wood pile high, and your solar panel clear of snow. Tune in often for living proof that you can make it through the winter in relative luxury whilst living in your van!

Really happy I found your channel. These winter in a van series videos are awesome. Please go in more detail about your wood stove. What is it sitting on and how high off the floor. What did you use to insulate the stove from the wood cabinet next to it. Is it possible to remove the rail around the top unless it has a function. What did you use to transition the pipe through the top of you van to hold it in place.

Thanks for checking out the channel and be sure to subscribe MsShawn43. My stove is bolted down onto a steel plate which is in turn screwed into a wooden counter that runs along the right side of my van. That puts the stove about 2 or 2&1/2 feet off the floor. I have heat shielding (steel plates) screwed into the wall behind the stove (about 1&1/2 inches off the wall to leave an air barrier). There is also some steel plate shielding on the right side screwed into the cabinet. I used stainless steel muffler pipe (3 inch) as a chimney flue. It was custom welded to make the transition from stove to roof. I would recommend getting the double wall insulated pipe however (I think you can order it from Cubic Mini Wood Stoves) to combat creosote build up. I have to clean mine out every 4 to 5 days if I'm using it every day all day. For more info on that see the video I referred to: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d8xdjbaey5yzfXU.html

The railing around the top of the stove is not designed to be removed though I'm sure it could be cut off with a grinder or something like that.

on the Grizzly model you can remove the brass rail to accommodate a pan on top for cooking , they list it like this as well ..

You can take your cap off your chimeny and it stays cleaner longer. Might have to put it back on towards the spring when it's very rainy. Other wise as long as there's a fire rain and snow are fine.

Hi Michael can I use the stove in the winter all winter long with no interruptions other than cleaning the stove and the pipes out the reason why I'm asking this question is because I'm thinking about staying in it for the whole winter and here we could go down to sometimes - 20 below without the wind chill

For heating your space, Would you find any benefit in using the larger Grizzly model?
@MichaelCoughlanmusic
@MichaelCoughlanmusic 6 жыл бұрын
My space is small. The Cub is perfect. It would be too hot with the Grizzly I think. I guess you could use less wood. But space is at a premium in my van as well. Saving a few inches helps out. Thanks for watching!

Wood fired frozen pizza LOL. Does the dry air from the wood stove effect your instruments? I understand humidity levels effect sound or maybe that is more orchestral like violins etc.

I only keep my old banger acoustic in the van. It's been through hell and back already so I don't really pay it any mind. That said, there's lots of air coming into the van from outside when the stove is in use so that helps.

Hi Michael I like your little wood stove we are thinking about getting one I was wondering can you put it in through the wall as well with a pellet stove pipe I cannot put it through my roof ? , Nice video 👍

Is it for your house? I don't see why not. Thanks for watching Michael!
@MichaelCoughlanmusic

It's certainly been done that way. Some people make a fitting in place of a window made of wood or sheet metal and cut the hole in it to avoid cutting through the vehicle's body.

In the -30 temps we get in Winnipeg how warm is it in your van? Does it take long to warm back up after opening / closing door .
@MichaelCoughlanmusic
@MichaelCoughlanmusic 5 жыл бұрын
It's pretty good. I've done it in Winnipeg at those crazy temps. You'll just need lots of hard wood to burn! And it warms up decently after you close the door. Be sure to have a bit of ventilation too.

Hey Michael, I've just subscribed and was wondering do live in your van? And if so where do you park at nights/days? I'm in Lindsay.

Hi Jim. Yes, I am a van dweller. I park mostly at the places I work. I also camp out at Walmarts when I'm on the road. When the weather isn't cold I park almost anywhere and stealth camp.

Isn't that rail on the top of the stove removable? You could fit a little larger pan that way.
@MichaelCoughlanmusic
@MichaelCoughlanmusic 6 жыл бұрын
It is. But I like it as a safeguard for holding boiling pots and frying pans from falling off due to my erratic movements while cooking. Primarily driven by mad hunger and impatience.

A guy I know has a you tube channel. "High Dollar Hobo" if you want to check it out sometime. He is building a camper from scratch. He plans on living in it year round. South Dakota has pretty cold winters as well. His camper will be something like 11x8 Do you think he should have the cubic or the Grizzly? I would think the Grizzly. He is early in the build though. Any advice is appreciated.

I don't know the figures of my space (cubic feet), but if his space is larger then I would go with the Grizzly. Thanks for watching JP!
