This was a great section of the conversation. Perhaps the consumerist drive of the church seen in book sales and seminars etc. have driven people towards mass market simplifications. They sell and they create their own subcultural energy when they get launched. They certainly can be helpful in some ways but also have limitations and even dangers. They can help us draw down deeply into a subject but also give us tunnel vision or cause us to ignore the 15 other factors in a given issue. It’s amazing how a half hour spent talking with a wise person face to face over a meal can change your life in more profound ways than dozens of books. And it’s not because he’s giving you information, it’s much more than that.

Half-hour meal with the wise: it’s a person, not an abstraction. (I’ve only just awakened to this idea but it’s striking true).

"The cleverer you are, the more foolish your simplemindedness. The totally clever are total fools in their simplemindedness. We cannot save ourselves from the cleverness of the spirit of this time through increasing our cleverness, but through accepting what our cleverness hates most, namely simplemindedness. Yet we also do not want to be artificial fools because we have fallen into simplemindedness, rather we will be clever fools. That leads to the supreme meaning. Cleverness couples itself with intention. Simplemindedness knows no intention. Cleverness conquers the world, but simplemindedness, the soul. So take on the vow of poverty of spirit in order to partake of the soul. Against this the scorn of my cleverness rose Up. Many will laugh at my foolishness. But no one will laugh more than I laughed at myself. So I overcame scorn. But when I had overcome it, I was near to my soul, and she could speak to me, and I was soon to see the desert becoming green." ~ Liber Novus

Simple messages transfer more knowledge when they apply archetypes. Hot dogs and apple pie is not just about the menu. A Norman Rockwell painting of a child praying before bed is a simple, low-cost message that packs a ton of knowledge.

Now that I know the music most churches now sing are licensed and generate royalties, it’s easy to understand the growth of the mega church and the simplification of the message. The gospel is the brand that music corporations annex to increase their income streams.

By the way, simplicity reduces the cost of knowledge transfer. To reach more people, simplicity will be more efficient. To be more thorough (effective), apply more energy to fewer people. Church where your priest hears your confession, vs church where the leaders contract with incredible musicians.

Perhaps the goal is to tell the basics of a complex issue. Then it gets someone to start seeking the deeper version. I make this point when Alex Jones screamed about chemicals in the water that turn the frogs gay. It was not exactly true. However, his hilarious oversimplification got people thinking of different pollutants. Masses of people probably know the costs of lead, oil slicks, radiation, and so on. However, there are many not well known. I guess I got interested in these things recently. It was because I wanted to see something other than Pascal's Wagering the kids with hellfire and brimstone, then making them paranoid. I like the midwit argument. It may be a take on how the simpltons are not exactly dumb or wrong. I put it this way. Grug. Foreigner come in. Take jerb. Dey took our jerbs! South Park! Midwit: Borders are racism and xenophobia. Genius: This is the law of supply and demand as explained in an economics textbook. I have heard another argument for simplicity, and I found it interesting. Someone said "Make things as simple as possible, but no simpler."

I am simple, but my simplification only applies to me. I don't need the egomania of the theologians ;-) I was one of those fly-over Okies for 24 years before retirement. I have also lived in California too ;-)

An increase in knowledge is an increase in sorrow. The intelligent have way more ontological weight to haul around. Also the distinctions of humility are more noticeable between economic classes than IQ in my experience and America continues it seems to deny it has a class system now in place. This isn’t rocket science. If you don’t hold a lot of thoughts in your head, loving the Lord and loving your neighbour are going to be naturally easier.

Isn't the whole maps of meaning thing about simplification? We are pattern matchers. That's how we go.

The complexity isn't dealt with thru one theologian. It is nuanced by millions of believers. I am persuaded that an Iowa CRC knows G-d more than a Grand Rapids CRC. Wisdom can't be distilled and marketed.
