Kory works on gentling Felix the Mustang in the training barn today!. He starts off by grooming Felix with a curry brush while he is in the chute, in order for him to get used to touch and realize that these things aren't going to hurt him. Kory also works on leading him around with a halter and lead rope.
We rescued Felix from the slaughter pipeline on 1/31/2023 and he is a handsome Mustang gelding from Pancake HMA in Nevada. He was gathered as a 3-year-old just over a year ago and has not been gentled yet. He is chestnut with pinto face and leg markings and beautiful heterochromia in one eye. This handsome boy would do best being adopted by a trainer with experience training Mustangs. Otherwise, anyone who falls in love could agree to take him to an experienced Mustang trainer upon adoption. He does require an application with the BLM as he is not yet titled.
We rescue horses of all species, ages, training levels and colors. No animal is ever turned away at our Open Admission Shelter!

he is a darn good looking mustang! such a pretty face and intelligent eyes. Thank you, Kory, for being so gentle in your approach. I love the way you work with these horses. That he didnt bolt out of the chute says a lot about the training method... even if he has only been handled just a little bit. Keep up the great work! I wish i could have a horse or two again, but i am afraid those days are behind me - too many physical problems these days, so i get my horse fix vicariously thru you guys and Pony Tails. =)

Thank You Kory for the essential work you put in to these horses, especially Mustangs. It's absolutely the best thing for them to learn BEFORE they leave any rescue. Their future absolutely counts on them being handleable, and even rideable! Humans in general can be quite petty as I'm sure you see all the time in rescue. Doing what's right isn't just the last act of kindness, but preparing them for the real world of humans.

What a beautiful proud, intelligent boy Felix is. He’s absolutely stunning. In time, he’s going to make an experienced rider, a great little horse. Thank you for giving this beautiful boy a great chance at life. It’s horrendous to think the BLM are rounding up these magnificent animals and sending them to auction where they run the risk of going to slaughter. God it’s heartbreaking. Well done Kory, this was a beautiful, gentle session to watch. I can see how much you like this boy.

My TWH used to try to root or pull the reins out of my hand and a friend told me to just keep my hands in position, not pull or jerk on the reins, just hold with a bit of slack and when my horse tried to throw his head down and nose out, he would learn real fast to stop cause HE was making himself uncomfortable, NOT me. It took about 4 weeks or so for him to stop and it sure works! I've had him over 9 yrs. now and I had to really work with him to change bad habits from bad riders and he is AMAZING now! I've always been firm but kind and patient. Just want to add that letting them run into the pressure THEY cause is an excellent training method!

It's a bit hard to get experience with a Mustang if no one will give you a chance with the first one to get experience. I owned a part Mustang, and handled and worked with abused horses so I would hope that would count if I chose this endeavor. Honestly though, I really think it best for him, because he's already at your facility and you have the equipment and people, that for his sake he should be started there. So kudos to Kory for getting him handled as much as possible, because a lot of the trauma for horses is moving from place to place constantly. No stability, so they don't learn to trust easy. Programs need to consider this and do their best to shorten the process for these guys, just because they weren't raised by humans.

He's actually beautiful Kory. I love his face and his kind eyes. He will make someone a very special companion if they treat him right and love on him a lot. Because they brand them like that, it doesn't help with them thinking people are not going to hurt them and they will be touchy around that area thinking here we go again. I've had a lot of experience with abused animals and if you pay attention while working with them, you'll soon be able to figure out what happened to them to cause them to fuss. Being an abused person myself I know that physical marks can be seen until they heal, emotional ones can't. So be gentle, be patient, pay attention, you'll soon find out the what and where.

I don't agree with all of Kory's methods or approaches--I think the horses experience unnecessary stress at times--but you can see that he really cares about them and is very thoughtful in how he goes about working with them. It's not always the way I would prefer, but I'm confident that they end up as sound-minded equine citizens. I appreciate that he rewards them for trying and thinking about what he's asking or what is expected of them.

Lots of mustangs get adopted from BLM here where I am. You might get the mustang for $25 but after one year you get paid $2000 for adopting. At one year you have to show the inspector your training progress, get the $2000, and get ownership. So how is it possible HPHS had to buy this mustang, and it is unhandled? The adopter got $2000 for adopting and training it. PS- donkeys are usually free from BLM, at least here, plus you still get paid at one year of adoption.

If this horse is only getting worked with once a week or every couple of weeks as Kory seems to indicate, you'll never get him very far. Anyone who works with Mustangs will tell you they need daily handling and consistency. As a matter of fact this goes for any horse in training. Hit and miss training won't get these horses very far.

@judyives1832
@judyives1832 Жыл бұрын
@@debiewers651 Wow. You are so rude! Maybe it’s yourself that doesn’t understand. I retrain rescue dogs for service dogs and I’m sure it’s a bit different but there are many similarities and one thing you never want to do with an abused or untrained animal is to “flood” them. This just sets you back so far, that you are causing more damage than you are fixing! It’s not like the horse is not being socialized if it not in a formal training session! It is being fed and interacted with every day. We have much better training understanding now, than we used to have and we understand something called “latent learning”. This means that the animal continues to learn and remember after a session. It’s so much more effective to do a short train and then let the dog (or horse) do something else for a bit and then bring them back in, than it is to do a full hard training sessions. Until the animal has learned to LOVE training, you are just going to sour them. Too much training, too fast, is not the way to go with these guys. An unhandled animal needs time to process what’s happening to him and change his attitude from fear and “fight or flight” to eagerness for more contact. Horses and dogs CAN NOT LEARN!! if their brains are not relaxed enough to use their frontal cortex instead of their limbic/reactive back brain.

Can You not set them free after they are caught? The mustangs?
@judyives1832
@judyives1832 Жыл бұрын
No the problem is that the mustangs are on public land and the policy is to keep the numbers down by rounding up groups of horses and removing them. The authorities do not want them there. If they were released, they would just round them up again and there are many of them in holding pens, around the country, (sometimes for years), eventually the state just auctions them and the kill buyers get them. In my opinion, it’s a flawed strategy because we disrupt their natural ways of balancing their numbers and we have some better strategies, like going in and neutering and vaccinating then releasing them. That way they stay in their family groups and keep other herds from increasing to fill the territories created by removing random groups. We have done this with stray dogs in some countries and it’s very very effective. If you just keep removing them, more just move into the area. If you neuter and leave them in place, they control their territory and keep it stable. This really cuts down on fighting and injuries and wandering into other areas. A stable group will set its territory and stick to it, causing less damage to neighbours properties.

Beautiful little Mustang. Butt ugly name IMO . Who gives these horses their name? Felix, it reminds me of a fat short old man who smokes cigars. LOL. It actually feels like abuse to me. A horse should have a name that gives him/her pride or describe their nature or color. Maybe something endearing, but Felix??? It feels like this horse was done wrong.
