This is going to be a boring video unless you want to know specifically about this subject 🤣

You should mention that 3dB drop in level equals a halving of audio power/perceived loudness. That makes a 12dB difference HUGE - 1/8th as loud.

What I found to be extremely cost-effective is to take one of those 4 dollar Valspar foam paint rollers and cut that up into thick washers to fit. Attached to a HPA gun, it's completely silent about 15 feet away outdoors. You can only hear the bb's whizzing by your head, its pretty incredible.

Cracking experiment mate! Result are looking good. 👍 Be great to see the next stage of testing and how that goes. Best of luck, I can't wait for those results. Cheers mate 😊

This is really interesting , would love to see if there is any difference in suppressor width vs length , I currently run a 40mm by 100mm chode of a suppressor and love the look and the reduction in overall length would be interesting if diameter of the wall of the material makes any difference

To measure the level you could create an isolation box with a hole in it and pop your decibel limiter and mic inside the box to isolate external sounds and inferences. Simple wooden box and foam panels

Have you considered a combo of materials for example mostly sound abosorbing but add in a few bits of material that reflect sound back into the suppressor. So like on the end caps and the outer walls to maybe reduce echo in the suppressor That said i have no idea if this would work just a thought i had

As you know, I did a lot of testing myself over years and had the same sort of methodology in my approach, so it's good to see we're on the same wave length (pun intended). Materials wise, I tried loads, in various shapes and sizes, baffle count etc. There was another material I could have used and an additional size baffle to get some more gains in terms of DB reduction, but it would have massively increased production time and price, vs the real gains it bought. The thing to look at is DB and HZ, as something can have a high DB but to the human ear not be picked up as well as something with a lower DB but higher frequency. Eg a baby wail is about 120db and a jackhammer something like 150+. But a baby's wail can be heard more distinctly over a greater distance than the jackhammer. Frequency of a jackhammer is sub 200, a baby wail is 300+ Hadron did a great video showing the actual audio properties and you can see the various wave forms, an interesting watch for sure.

Great video, and nice to see some solid results. I was a sound engineer for 20+ years, so have more than a passing interest in acoustics. I'd often thought about doing some suppressor design but never really had the time to do much with it. I'll drop you a PM for something that might help with the design stage... I also have a question for you based around the measuring that you used... But first a bit of context for those who possibly aren't so involved with sound and don't realise how significant an 11dB reduction is. The decibel scale is logarithmic rather than linear - every 3dB drop is a *halving* of the sound pressure being measured. Now, this doesn't directly correlate to how we hear 'volume' which is the perceived difference rather than the measured difference. To drop the human perceived volume by half, you need to lower the dB level by approx 10dB. So by getting a result of 11dB you've done a little more than that -which is nothing short of incredible. Well done! So my question refers to the meters being used. There are several scales typically used for dB measurement, the most popular being A and C. Do you know what your SPL meters were set to? Because with reference to Mr Jones' comment below about sound pressure levels being related to frequency, it's important know if you're trying to measure actual pressure levels (C scale) or human perceived pressure levels (A scale).

Have you considered mixing materials? Don't know how detailed you want to get, but as the different densities and make up of the materials themselves likely affect sound in different ways it might be interesting to see if alternating materials, or changing the order of layers has any affect. Of course it may be best to continue with material Zulu for design, and once you have a pattern that works there see if making alterations within that design provides any benefit.

If you have access to FDM printer, try to print discs that separates some foam into compartments, but quite big ones, in this tubes i would go for 3 to 4, they would act like walls, i wonder if that decrease dB even more. From my test with silencer 3d printed inserts pure prints don't work well, pure foam works well , but hybrid ones works the best. Will you share material type of the best working ones ? :)

when you do start up the custom foam inserts again, do you ship to the US? I have an arcturus pp19 suppressor that I would like to add some foam to. The Novritch suppressor is great but I need it the longest length for it to suppress it. Would larger diameter suppressors work well when they are shorter too? Like the Putnik ak supressors.

Use some hair curlers to create larger expansion spaces in the silencer. This cuts noise massively, and the tape flaps on the end of the silencer then adds further. Foam only will never yeald thr best results thanks for thr kids mate
