It had to go through all the different station of our legislation, which is a lot, and more than 700, admittedly most of them being straight, white and male, people got to vote on it. There are aspects of the 1950s that could benefit our modern society. Things such as demanding quality products instead of accepting planned obsolescence...Samsung and iPhone I'm looking at you. Glass backs so we can't change out a bad battery isn't very nice. Shame on you. Anyway, we need to speak up and applaud businesses with pride in their quality products. People in the 50s were paid a living wage, meaning 1 job working 40 hours a week was enough to support a family of 5 people. We need to remember that and recognize that the best parts of the 50s were because people weren't so freaking poor all the time! Our time is too valuable to give it away so cheaply yet here we are in the 2020s fighting the same fight for fair pay they fought in the 1920s. We need to learn both the good and the bad from the past so we can prevent the bullshit and repeat what made that era great.

My grandparents all had bad relationships, and all my aunt's and uncles are either divorced or on the verge of it. Important disability related note- ABA or Applied Behavioural Analysis, a ‘treatment’ still very commonly practised on autistic people, and generally the ‘intervention’ recommended to parents oft diagnosed children, was also developed by Ivar Lovaas concurrently with the ‘feminine boy project’ and they have the same pseudoscientific roots. Very similar outcomes occur in many autistics subjected to ABA to make them appear more neurotypical- Lovaas didn’t consider us ‘people in the psychological sense’ and thought we had to be ‘built from the ground up’. Difference is with ABA that it’s a multi billion dollar industry that appears to ‘work’ on the surface in that many people wind up ‘passing’ but refuses to look at the traumatic consequences. Proponents constantly talk over us and proclaim ABA is necessary for us to live happy lives while even the US military has just declared it doesn’t actually work and has traumatic outcomes!

I am from the US and I used to know someone that dated a man that worked for a conversion therapy organization. He was paid to literally kidnap minors from their homes in the middle of the night and take them to their "new home". I couldn't imagine being that parent listening to my child scream for help while being kidnapped from their bedroom... what parent would pay for their child to experience such an awful and life altering event that will probably keep them up at night for the rest of their lives in fear of getting kidnapped again.

I read that they employ the kidnapping strategy because they convince their clients (the parents) not to tell their children they will be sent to these camps because they may run away if they know about it. To me it sounds more like a strategy to traumatise children and to then exploit this trauma to gain control over the children. These caps children are sent to are often poorly run with insufficient health and safety standards. Boys are suposed to "man up" in them and so the people running the camps have little understanding of medical conditions which may counter-indicate strenous exercise.

The kidnapping strategy is also used for other "camps" for "problem" youth in the United States. In many a "troubled" teen is kidnapped then driven, often across state lines, to wilderness camps, boarding schools, or treatment facilities. Unsurprising many are so-called Christian programes/schools (many unlicensed). Even Paris Hilton was kidnapped and taken to wilderness programs. Parents send their kids for a variety of reasons like mental health/ behavioral issues, substance abuse, running away, staying out late, partying, playing too many video games, having sex, being gay, essentially being a teenager. Also these types of programs are sometimes offered as a alternative to juvie and as a place to stick foster children. Unfortunately many of the victims of these kidnappings and programs suffer from PTSD and fractured relationships with their parents.

As an asexual, one of the historical parts I found most interesting was the early idea that sexuality is influenced by the parents. Early on in my baby-ace days, sometime after coming out to my parents, my dad actually floated the idea that maybe I wouldn’t be so gosh-darned asexual if I’d been raised with a better image of what marriage is like. I shut that shit right down as fast as I could (unfortunately, because I wasn’t too adept at explaining these things yet, I partially relied on the argument that being asexual doesn’t close off my opportunities for romance, and later I turned out to be mostly-aromantic too HAHA OOPS) but like, the world is still a little more behind on asexuality, so that stereotype persists.

Im a counterexample to this - an asexual aromantic whose parents are in a loving marriage, and in fact whose parents are among those rare few who fell in love when they first met each other and the love stuck around. And my mom told me where babies come from when I was 8 and fostered a sex-positive attitude. If marriage and upbringing influenced sexuality like that, I would be 100% straight. As it is, though, the idea of having sex with someone grosses me out, and what would be crushes in a person with romantic leanings translated to "I wanna do cool moves just like this character!" in me, which is NOT a crush - and besides, I felt that way about some of the things my female cousins knew how to do too - and I don't think most people have crushes on their cousins.

My older brother had to endure this torture when he learned to write. His penmanship has been permanently handicapped ever since. I’m actually really quite glad that none of my teachers cared if a student was left handed or not. I was quite lucky in that regard, as while my older brother is only four years older than me, he had entirely different teachers when he learned how to write.

Yes. My grandma was shamed constantly by her family and in school for being left-handed and were punished even for such things as taking a glass with "the wrong" hand. She barely made it through school and says it was the worst time of her life. I think she still believes herself to be inferior to other people and rightly bullied. Her best friend was her gay cousin. He knew about being ostraciced.

Piece of queer history X disability history ! (CW : ABA, autism abuse) ABA (Applied Behaviour Analysis) is the "conversation therapy" for autism, and both have been invented around the same time and interacting with one another. Autistic children received electric shock when stimming, today restraint and tying children up to chairs is still used. It sadly still one of the most recommended treatment to parent of autistic children. I'd like to add to that this type of "treatment" is sometimes used against people who are actually ill. Punishment for using mobility aid for example is thing. "Queerness is not illness and doesn't need it be cured" isn't that much the issue here for me. Even when something is an illness, tortuing people out of their symptoms is a terrible thing to do.

(TRIGGER WARNING: Personal Experience with Reparative Therapy) I underwent reparative therapy when my parents caught me watching a buzzfeed video on Pride. They told me they were worried I would go to Hell if I even thought about homosexuality in a positive light. Spoilers, I'm still gay. I ended up researching the topic to understand more about the therapy they asked me to do and confronted them about it. Reparative therapy is more one-on-one talk therapy, but it is still WILD what they ask you to do. For example, I was told to wear a bright orange wrist band and any time I had a gay thought I was supposed to snap the band against my wrist to associate the pain of the band with the gay thought. Another time, they told me to associate the thought of dead relatives with the shame of being gay, so yeah, don't support reparative or gay therapy.

I had to call my mother to come get me while I was standing under a lamplight. I was only 16! What would have happened if I got kidnapped?! I ran away from that house after his wife found out about my attraction to women, she started making it a rule I couldn’t lock the bathroom door. Then would come in the bathroom and watch me in the shower. It took me years to come out about what happened to me! Take it from me kids, don’t deal with the abuse. In addition to your list of organizations at the beginning, the American Counseling Association, the American Psychological Association, and the National Association of Social Workers also condemn conversion therapy in their codes of ethics, as well as say that a therapist cannot refuse to treat someone because of their sexual orientation. So those are most of the major mental health professional organizations here in the U.S. :) Here in Texas last year they tried to make a rule that mental health practitioners and social workers could refuse to treat/serve LGBT clients, but it was overturned very quickly. :)

I would need to be careful not to actually hold myself out as conversion therapy, adverts could say something like: are you concerned about your child's sexuality? I can help. I'm a cisgender bi woman and married to a cisgender heterosexual man. We've been together 11 years and married for 8 of them. Honestly, it can be an awkward place to be from a label point of view. People assume I've 'picked a team' or that as a raging nymphomaniac (as we well know all bisexual folk are) I'm cheating on a daily basis. The best advice I ever got was that being in a loving relationship doesn't have to impact on your sexuality. If you were married and straight, you could still have crushes on other men without indulging in them physically, and it's the same for gay and bi. You don't have to be a perfect 50/50 either. You could be 75/25 or 40/60, and it could change as you do throughout your life. For me, the best label is Bi. I'm married, my marriage is a happy, stable one and I still have sexual attractions towards other women (and men) that I don't do anything about. Because I love my husband. But if you don't feel that, don't feel pressured into picking one. You have the right to be whoever you want to be, and have the right for that to change as much as you damn well please

Mostly why I hid my LGBTQA+ and what do you know she is still a Trans woman and still Pan just now mentally messed up like paranoid, self harm, depression, ptsd, night terrors, suicide attempts, anxiety, panic disorder, worse disforia, and extreme anger sperts. All she didn't have till the "therapy" so ya don't do it you will mess up the person for the rest of their life won't get the results you want and you may loose them. Love people for who they are being LGBTQA+ I'd not harmful or bad not even against Christianity that was a mess up in translation not in the original Wrighting so love them and suport thank you

New Zealand government announced they planned to ban conversion therapy in 2020 and after a Green Party petition to speed up the law change got 157,000 signatures, the law is being sped up for this year. All this just happened last week... 🍾 🥂 🎉 🍾

There was a time i was taught to associate my desires with pain, and it was more religious like 'i was hurting jesus' every time i viewed honosexual corn and I'd spend so many nights crying afterwards because i couldn't fight against it. Made me hate having any sexual desire at all and wanted to mutilate myself, leading to me being sent to therapy. I hated being a woman because of my hatred for my body, which isn't the sane as a trans person. (Bc i just wanted to hurt myself and feel nothing at all, not exactly wanting to change genders, which made this period of life so depressing. I just wanted pain 😅) Distancing myself from the religious guilt helped me love & accept myself and my sexuality. I'm gay and proud! 😁

One state in Australia has passed a law making conversion therapy illegal, more states are following, slowly, but it's happening!

This is such an important topic to bring to light. People don't want to acknowledge that these things happen still because it's an ugly side of our culture, but it is there. Related to this is that I have been getting religious ads on these sorts of videos, specifically getting it on this video made me realize how damaging that is. I reported it as abuse because I truly believe that LGBTQ videos or being connected with religious adds intentionally and it is incredibly harmful to conflate "LGBTQ" with "Seeking God" or worse, "Needing God". This constant, subtle undermining of identity is so ingrained in our culture it's hard to recognize it for what it is. I shouldn't have to turn off targeted adds to avoid harassment. Thanks Jessica for being such a wonderful advocate and giving us the example of and vocabulary for discussing these important things.

Are you familiar with the podcast “Sawbones”? It’s a hetero married couple going through “misguided medical history”, one of them is a doctor. I just started listening to the episodes, starting in 2013 when it started. Highly recommend.

Oh boy, am I ever right there with you - my State in the US was supposed to start vaccinating 30 year olds like us with respiratory issues/auto immune disorders/issues of the parasympathetic nervous system etc. starting back on January 20. And here it is over a month later, and I too am constantly refreshing my emails (all day and all night long) wondering if I’m ever going to get my COVID-19 vaccine appointment…
