As a Chilean, I can confirm many things about this. 1. This is true. 2. About first date, this is true. We do not drink Piscola (Pisco+Cola, Cola is Coke) like that, not everyone drinks. We may drink piscola when we meet friends, in parties and things like that. 3. "Mi chanchita"-> "My little pig". (Chanchita comes from "chancha", and "chancha" is the femenine version of a pig). It is indeed used as a "cute" term and it does not mean any offense. 4. This is true! If you're dating a Chilean, don't say that that Chilean is your boyfriend or girlfriend in Spanish (novio/novia), as that stage is for before marriage. 5. Hotdogs are indeed what we call "Completos". As an additional note, He says: "Le ponís el pan...", and the proper way to say it is "(Tú) le pones el pan...". We tend to misuse verbal forms, and it is very common. About sexual references, we call those "tallas en doble sentido" (doubled way jokes). 6. I am not sure about being touchy, as I am very very introverted. But yes, Chilean Spanish is a whole new Spanish hahahahaha 7. This happens a lot. 8. Soccer is a thing for Chileans. Chileans tend to be very passionate about soccer, specially about Chilean team. The dude says: "C'mon motherfucker, hit the ball you [weon], [Puta la wea]... Look at that, agh...... look, look, look, look look look GOAL motherfuckers". "Weon" means a lot of things. It can be used as a noun, as an offense, or to refer to anyone in good or bad terms. "Wea" means also a lot of things, and it means "an object", "a thing". "Puta la wea" is like, "Aw, damn, that shit", and it is an expression. Chileans tend to use a lot of these kind of words, but you must know "weon" and "wea" if you want to come to Chile. I don't know why, but I always find Chilean men so attractive! They can be so charming and funny at the same time. I have a Chilean coworker and his exactly like that.

Yep we are a quirky bunch, a bit of an outlier within the Latin stereotype yet can be very witty, funny, passionate, loyal and caring once we get close. We can easily laugh at ourselves and make good use of some creative sarcasm as part of our own humor. Overall we Chileans rarely go unnoticed as there is always something that distinguishes us from the rest....and that is besides the way we speak!

I was expecting for this video, it made me laugh a lot. Just a little correction: at least i haven't seen any person over 25 drinking piscola in a bottle (it's called mamadera) as a date.

Chilean guy here! Just wanted to add my two scents: 2A - It's the first time I see a Chilean person drinking piscola in the streets. Piscola is usually treated like whiskey: you don't drink it in public places, you drink it at parties or gatherings. Also, since drinking alcohol in public places is illegal in Chile, people don't drink like that (as portrayed in the video), or if they do, they'd only drink a beer. 2B - PDA is totally accepted in Chile, but I wouldn't say it's more common than in other South American countries. 5 - Chileans drink more than their neighbours (except for Argentina and Uruguay, according to recent surveys), but we are far behind the UK, Netherlands, Lithuania, Ireland, and other European countries. The sexual innuendos are associated with our sense of humour. 7 - Having traveled a lot and lived in different countries (especially in Europe), I'd say this one depends a lot on the countries you compare Chile with. Chileans, in my experience, are the least dramatic people in South America. I'd compare them to Southern French people when it comes to this. About breaking up and coming back together, it's definitely more common than in Nordic countries, but I don't think it's more common than in countries like Spain, so I wouldn't add it as a hallmark of Chilean people.

I'm half Chilean and I can definitely relate to the bit about Chileans not being forward and confident as far as courting someone (that's me 100%), and also giving people nicknames that seem insulting. I've given people tons of nicknames that offended them, even though I never meant it that way. In fact it almost got me physically attacked at work once 😬

I have been waiting for a while finally. 1. This is true. We tend to 2. It's quite normal to see a lot of couples getting touchy even in public and when it comes to piscola (I LOVE IT), it's more of a party thing from family gathering like for example asados (bbq parties) even though you may see someone enjoy it on a park or even the beach. 3. The nicknames aren't supposed to be offensive in some ways, they are meant to be cute, just saying. 4. So true. You are pololeando (dating). 5. COMPLETOS ARE EVERYTHING!!!! 6. Not sure about this, but the Chilean Spanish is spot on. There's even a saying that goes like "If you're hearing someone speaking Spanish really fast and understand them, they are Dominican. If not, they are Chilean". 7. Like every Latinos, we tend to get dramatic sometimes. 8. Football is everything in Chile. Your relationship can be strained if you for example are supporting the rivals instead of the home teams (Universidad de Chile vs Colo-Colo for example). Whenever the National team plays, just be ready for a whole lot of swearing that only a Chilean can spit out. Overall, I am so happy for finally seeing this video being finally made. As a Chilean woman, I agree with almost everything here. Great research Marina!!! Only in my experience, we haven´t drunk on the streets (I don´t drink at all) and I eat completos (aka Tocomples) with asparagus or palmitos instead of sausage (vegetarian). Breaking up and making up like that? looks a bit toxic, something I would watch on a teleserie, I haven´t had that kind of experience but maybe other people can identify with that? idk. You go to places called Fonda's and you can taste all kind of Chilean food (completo is just one of them) and drink something called terremoto (earthquake in Spanish) , it's called that way because after a drink you get shaky like being experiencing one 😂😂😂 Well , chao cabros (bye guys )

Wow, I dated a Chilean for eight years and a lot of this matches up with my experience. I was especially interested to hear about certain things that I had thought were personality traits of my boyfriend in particular that turned out to be typical Chilean behaviors, like the relative shyness in approaching a woman. Yup! But there were a few things that diverged from my experience: I've never heard of “piscola.” He just drank ordinary stuff that I'd heard about. I never heard of, or saw, a “completo.” He and his family made a lot of rice and meat, and he told me that that a beet and cauliflower salad (which he made for me a couple of times) and certain pumpkin soup were two distinctive Chilean dishes. (He also happened to love Chinese food.) Our first "date" was...unusual. We were just friends and he had invited me to stay overnight at Virginia Beach along with his sister and brother. I’d thought that was a bit quaint but had assumed that Chilean culture was more family-oriented than the US’s (which it is) and that group outings might be a form of early “date” for them, as it is in some other cultures. But the night before the trip, he called to tell me it "turned out that his brother and sister could not come." Since I wanted to be his girlfriend anyway, I didn't object and assumed that his initial plans had been a ruse to get me to feel comfortable about going. Much later, he told me that his sister and brother really were planning to come originally but then opted out to give him and me alone time with the hope that we might get romantic. Once our trip began, I could see he was uncomfortable about "asking me out," and quite a few hours passed once we got to Virginia Beach (a couple hours' drive from us) before he suddenly, offhandedly slipped me the question as we were sitting on the hotel couch. When it came time to go to bed, he excused himself and when he came back, he reeked of cigarette smoke. I was shocked and repelled because I hadn't even known he smoked, and except for that once, I don't know of any time that he ever did. Later, he told me he was feeling nervous and that's why he slipped out for this most uncharacteristic smoke. He never called me "chanchita" and he didn't call me "gordita" that much, either. I guess he did call me “dijita” a lot, though-I had always heard it as “jita” and never did check out what it meant. He would often call me "mi dijita linda" ("my pretty old woman"), and every once in a while, he'd refer to me as "mi vieja," (“my old woman”) which he explained to me is another term of endearment. Instead of "gordita," he'd call me "flaquita" ("skinny little lady"), one of his favorite expressions for me (I guess because I really was skinny), along with "reina" ("queen"). At the beginning, he would also sometimes call me "princesa' ("princess") but eventually "reina" took over completely. "Mi tiernecita” (“sweet little one”) was another term he’d use, and “mi reina preciosa" ("precious queen"), "mi flaquita bonita" ("pretty skinny one"), and “mi reina, linda, preciosa” were common embellishments of his. I was kind of disappointed once when I listened to a Spanish radio show and heard the announcer throwing these terms around when talking with people who called in. Here I had thought they were special terms that my boyfriend had come up with just for me! (I don’t even think this announcer was Chilean.) I had heard of some of the “stages” referred to in this video, but my boyfriend didn’t talk about them that much. Ever since we started going out, he referred to me as “mi novia,” even though we never had any desire to marry each other-contrary to what the video says. I don’t remember a lot of sexual innuendo in talk, but maybe I’m just blocking that from my memory? Lol. I also don’t remember him being touchy with other female relatives, even though I spent quite a bit of time with him when some of his sisters were around. Also, I was really interested to hear that breaking up and making up is common with Chileans and is considered a means of bringing some drama into life. In our eight years together, my guy broke up with me three times and made up twice (tried for three), but unlike in the video, he didn’t get all angry and dramatic about the breakups; they were more matter-of-fact, and the reunions were that way, too. The “relaxing right after making up” did ring true-back to his old bad habits right away! I considered his third breakup of his to be a strikeout and told him so…maybe he wasn't prepared for this reaction, because for years afterwards, he would call me up once or twice a year (often on Christmas) to remind me of all the great times we had together and how wonderful he was, to ask me to go out with him again, to ignore all my objections and complaints, and to say dramatically, "Me repiento mil veces" (I repent a thousand times) for having broken up with me. Weirdly, he came to my house several months after our breakup when he’d been scratched brutally by his next girlfriend, to see if I had any medicine I could give him because he didn’t want his sisters to get involved. He also called me up once, about five years after we’d broken up, when he was with a later girlfriend…he went so far as to get her to talk to me on the phone, very amiably (and tell me how wonderful he was). I’m not sure if this fits into typical Chilean behavior somehow, but it definitely felt like boundary-blurring to me. One other distinguishing characteristic of this guy was his propensity to lie (transparently) for convenience. When I confronted him about it, he called them "white lies" and said it was a result of his impoverished upbringing, in which it was often necessary to do that just to get what you needed. I know his brother was this way, too. I’m wondering if this might be another common Chilean trait, or at least for the poorer ones? Oh, also--his whole family loved to dance! But only to Latin music.

- It's true, we are reserved/shy when we first meet a girl, we're low profile in that respect, nothing like cubans or colombians. Although, when we feel that the ice is broken, we are very affectionate. - That way of drinking piscola in such a concealed way is used when attending concerts or sport matches, and just a few people do it. - Yeah, most of people are touchy with their friends and relatives, that's true, that's quite latino and phillipino as well. But, when being with the girlfriend, we take some distance. When we see our partner too close with other people we try to "pee the situation" (mark territory) in a gently way, like holding hands, taking part of the conversation or hughing the girlfriend so that the others notice that she's taken. - Most of my friends and I don't like the drama, we don't make a big deal of meaningless things, but yes, some people are drama queens and kings.
