No matter how many times I've seen this version, "KISS ME FAT BOY!" gets me every single time lol.

Basically, it was revealed that 'it' was an ancient creature that fell from the stars into that area that became Derry... For centuries upon its arrival, it would feed on the population of the area every 27 years before it would hibernate deep underground. The native Americans tried to vanquish it, but failed before the European settlers started arriving and founded the town of Derry... so, it began feeding on the people of the town every time it awoke... it absorbed the knowledge of the times from its victims and was able to morph into part of the town, hunting and killing from the sewers that had been built over time. It would kill adults, but preferred children because of their fear of the supernatural and its ability to blind the adults of its presence, even in sleep. When the 'lucky seven' were able to escape it and find each other, they created a collective force that gave them the strength to resist, fight and mortally wound it... but it escaped and went into early hibernation to heal from the near-fatal injuries it had sustained. Each of the seven made a vow to return if it were to come back... Only Mike Hanlon stayed behind in Derry and he was the only one not to become immensely successful as an adult. When 5 of the 7 return to Derry, the memories came back gradually... they realized they still had that collective force they had created as children to fight it... The issue of the 6 becoming successful, but forgetting their encounters w/ Pennywise likely came from the childhood trauma that they had sustained from it. Once each left Derry, they stepped out of its supernatural influence that it has over the town, even in hibernation... but every single one discovered upon returning to Derry that none had any children, despite many opportunities. Before he died, Stan was lamenting why he & his wife couldn't have a child, and he kinda knew it was him, because there was something unfinished in their lives. It could have been something Pennywise cast on the 7 to keep them away from Derry, but it was never addressed. However, after Pennywise was finally destroyed, the surviving 5 discovered that all connections to Derry were fading away... Ben and Bev became a couple... Bill was able to bring his wife Audra back... and even Mike was considering a move out of Derry. Once it was dead, the town's sewage systems that had been its sanctuary collapsed.

In the books, IT is actually an Lovecraftian entity which originates from a place called Macroverse, a space outside of our universe. It existed there with another entity, a benevolent, colossal turtle like creature called Maturin, who aeons ago vomited out our own universe and several others. It is a shapeshifter which true form is the Deadlights, a swirling, glowing energy which make any lesser creature that looks into them insane.

"I love that she loves every one of them" lines that make you know 100% she didn't read the book.

The book explains a whole lot more about why they forgot everything and how pennywise did alot of evil in that town before she choice to pick the clown as her favorite form.

I love the fact that this was directed by Tommy Lee Wallace, who played Michael Myers in the closet scene in the original movie. So Michael Myers directed IT, lol.

Geesh the "Don't you want it" and "Kill them all" scenes still get to me. Tim Curry is just amazing. I remember when I was in college I showed my friends this movie and my one friend would torture me with those quotes. He imitated Pennywise very well, it creeped me out.

John Ritter was really an underappreciated actor. Yes, he was very funny. But if you look at the old episodes of The Waltons, you'll see that he's very good at drama too. He is one of the high points of this movie playing adult Ben. He does a great job as the blue collar kid who made good. He's impressive playing "you can't hide redneck." Yep.. he's rich. But his past shines through. Oh, and the "fire at the Black Spot?" Dick Hallorann from The Shining was there (according to the book).

This book is about having a bad and traumatic childhood and the fog represents not wanting to think about this and wanting to hide it into the deep recesses of your mind.

The Memory thing ithat Pennywise does is similar to the effects of what Pennywise does to the Townsfolk. It makes them forget. That's why the children who disappear in Derry never really seem to result in police searches for the body. Only two types of people are not affected by this telepathic effect. One is the adults have to be children at heart or never fully grow up inside as an adult. The second is when they actively resist and force themselves to remember through books, knowledge or enlightenment. There was a problem with the role change between Mike and Ben when it came to who was the one who had the knowledge. In the movie, it wasn't knowledge or books that made Mike remember. It was something else.

Fun fact - In the mid-90s Harry Anderson lived in Duvall, Washington, just down the road from where I grew up. He would fly down to Los Angeles to film Dave's World, then fly back for the weekend. Once a month, he would put on a magic show for the kids at the local library. People I knew who met him said he was just like Judge Harold T. Stone on Night Court.

Both versions cut a major plot point from the novel. When they were kids they built a smoke hole that was used to enter a vision quest-type hallucination where they discovered It's origins and joined forces with a mystic turtle that created the universe and fought It by performing the Ritual of Chud.

Everything is explained better in the book, but as for the "spider" form at the end, it's the most comprehensible form that the Losers club members can't visualize. Technically the true form of Pennywise is the Deadlights, his true form is described as being too complex for mortals to understand what they're looking at. As for the memory loss, Pennywise has many supernatural abilities and some of those are used to erase memories or create false memories for the people of Derry. This is to hide his presence so he can re-emerge and kill every 27 years. That's how there were scrapbook pages with Pennywise on them and yet nobody remembers this centuries old clown. Even Mike didn't remember the scrapbook pages until he was flipping through it and one of the other's pointed it out. There's a force of good, space turtle, that protected and guided the kids. Although it would not be there forever and could only help so much. The kids had their "promise" in this movie, the blood pact in the remake and the gangbang scene in the book to form a connection with each other. Their self made connection was weaker than the space turtles help, but was enough to remember each other once they got called. Little by little their memories came back the closer they got to Derry and longer they stayed. This was due to their connection and because Pennywise wanted them to remember in hopes they would remember their fear more than their courage. Once Pennywise was truly dead and the Losers left, there was no need to remember as Derry was finally starting to heal. The town in the book is a sort of living character too in the sense that it's infected by Pennywise's presence and with IT gone the town is kind of reborn.

The reason Ben and Bev will still remember is because they’re together. But they would only retain selective memories. Like I think they’d only remember the love they felt for one another. Once Pennywise was gone, the fog was taking effect not only on those who leave but also on the residents themselves. Essentially erasing all of IT’s work and effect on the people and the town, breaking the Derry curse. (In the book a good portion of the town falls in disarray because IT had died) Bill and Mike were just barely remembering at the end as the fog was taking effect.

For me, being from Rural Maine, Salems Lot was the scariest of them all. I always kind of knew that Derry was a stand in for Bangor. Just the way he described it. We used to go up there every other weekend when Bangor International had a PX and a Commissary left over from the Dow AFB days. I know that Paul Bunyan Statue very well, it’s real (NOT the same one in the film.)

This came on ABC family back in the day. I definitely saw this one way too young.

The "Beth in Ms. Kersh's house" scene is probably one of the scariest scenes in the whole movie (part 1 and 2) as well as the scene in which young Ben sees his dad.

I wish we had the Astral Turtle, they never go into all the Alien details of IT, and how long it has really been feeding on city. Georgie appears to Bill as a kid in part 1 too. IT's fog over all the town has been clouding everyone for centuries, and only the magic of the group was able to break through so much of what IT controls.

Actually, in the book the explanation is that there is an unknown good force that made them to be friends and fight against Pennywise. After they defeat Pennywise when they were children, this unknown force erase their memories and they become strangers again in the school, and every one of them moved from Derry, except Mike that kept the memories. When they were adults and Pennywise returns, the unknown force brought the memories back again. By the end of the movie they start gradually losing the memories of each other by the moment no one remember anything. Only Ben and Bev married but pennywise memories were gone. Some days later Mike phones Ritchie but Ritchie says that he barely remember Mike. The movie finish with Bill riding the bike with his wife and being aware the memories are almost gone, and the book finishes with Bill riding to the horizon with the memories completely gone, not remembering none of his friends nor any fact related to Pennywise. The book is much more deep. I strongly recommend.

In the book, there's an actual ethereal force bonding them together. It's a force that's opposed to Pennywise. They even say that after they defeat the clown as kids, the bond they share is broken. There's a line about how the seven of them are never all together at the same time ever again. That's why Bev sleeps with them all, to keep them connected forever (in King's coked up mind it makes sense). Pennywise tries to defeat them later by giving them success outside of Derry, but NONE of them are truly happy or content. Eddy basically married his emotionally manipulative mother. Ben is pining for a woman he can't even remember. Bev married her emotionally and physically abusive father. Richie and Bill seem to be the most content, but something is always missing in their lives, and it's tied to the memories they lost of their childhood. It's theorized that of all the Loser's club, only Stan left town AND remembers fully what happened, which is why he chose to commit suicide rather than go back. As for the fog setting in at the end, it might be that, once more, the force for good that brought them together is gone. Also, the book pretty much says that the only reason there is a town there is because Pennywise has been there since the dinosaurs and he pulled people to that place. Now that he's dead, the town starts dying as well. People start leaving and even basic things like the sewers and water mains start breaking apart without Pennywise to keep them together. It's also possible that they start to lose their memories because the force for good is helping them forget the trauma of what they went through, but that includes their friendships. Ben and Bev's love for one another might help them stay in each others' life. Just some food for thought.

Your little one is my favorite movie reactor! IT bites Eddie’s arm off in the book. This story is about youth and friendship. The miniseries concentrated on that, so captured the soul of the story much better. Both versions over emphasize Pennywise’s clown form. In the book the children in Derry are hunted by many monsters. Everyone looses their memories after Pennywise dies. Even the diaries that Mike keeps begin to fade. The ending is bittersweet.

I did like that the cure for magical amnesia was an equally childish notion of riding a bike to outrun the devil. Don't remember if the book was exactly the same, but I remember it being a hell of a lot more exciting than what they presented here. Great video. (My vote goes to the kids section of this one, as it had a lot more scares)

I really like this reaction by you guys. IT was my favorite book by King and still is honestly to this day. The mini series was something that really made an impression on my when I was young although now looking at it again which I did right before the new movies came out, I realized how much scarier I remembered in my teenage memory than it really was. I was ecctatic when I heard they were doing a remake movie and I really love the movies. They aren't completely true to the novel either but I feel they really do justice to the feel an atmosphere that you get from the book. And it of course is much scarier, although the book is still scarier than both. And of course the book has scenes they just can't put in the movies that just creep you out in ways you wouldn't believe without reading it yourself. Even the scene with them all having sex sounds so weird but in the storyline itself it doesn't seem nearly as strange as it sounds. It does seem to make sense somehow when I actually read it. I don't remember feeling that is was really so controversial at that time. Strange...I know. The novel really does explain all of the things that are still a little confusing with both the mini series and the movies. IT is explained much better as is it's abilities, existence and motivations. I can't wait for you to watch the second movie. Keep up the good work guys. You are my favorite reaction channel.

THE MEMORY PROBLEM: So this is going to get wierd, but here goes. SPOILERS FOR THE BOOK: Both versions cut out IT's nemisis, The Turtle. The Turtle accidentally created the universe by vomiting it up and tends to be a benevolent, but hands off god. It selects the Losers to deal with IT after thousands of years because somehow IT has become pregnant and IT's spawn threaten exisistance. The Turtle protects the Losers as much as it can, and that includes making them forget about Derry/IT (in the book it's clearer those terms are interchangeable). This accomplished two things. It allows them to not suffer lifelong PTSD from fighting with a cosmic abomination and, more cynically, the Losers are more effect cannon fodder when they return as adults because they no longer understand what they're up against. When confronted with IT's final form and the peril they're in becomes clear, one of the Losers comments that Stan had the right idea; they should have committed suicide too.

Cool, I was waiting for this. Now I can go back and watch the remake reaction. I was really hoping you would have done the entire mini series before the remake though so you didn't have her comparing it to something that benefited from having a higher budget.

The Prince Albert in a can is a old joke referring the Pipe and Rolling tobacco company called "Prince Albert" and it came in cans. Mainly when bought in large quantities but they did have em sold in small cans too. So the joke is "do you have Prince Albert in a can? You do? We you better let him out." Hopefully you get it now.

The idea is as you become an adult, you forget the Pen ywise trauma. After the adult event, the losers started to forget Pennywise.

Pennywise is actually controlling Derry and its inhabitants, so people are oblivious to him and to the tragic events that he causes. So when they leave Derry, they simply forget about their lives in the town. Their hand scars also disappear and they only show up when they get the call from Mike and get reminded of their oath. As soon as they enter Derry they begin to recall everything and they realise that there's just no way to beat IT.

Pennywise showed as a specific dog for the orderly in Juniper Hills, because the guard he was attacking had been attacked by that kind of dog and was scared to death of all dogs ever since.

There is a pattern in Stephen Kings version of Derry which shows up in several stories where adults tend to forget or are blind to the supernatural. In IT this also applies to those that leave Derry. I assume being so traumatized by it is largely why their memories come back though there are other possibilities.

It's all about trauma. Each kid suffers abuse either through their parents or Henry's gang. The town sees it happening but does nothing about it, which is highlighted by the adults inability to see "It" preying on all of these children's fears and insecurities. Maybe at one time they did, but like with other things trained themselves to turn a blind eye to it all out of fear or want of self-preservation. It makes sense when you look at King's other works based around showing the seedy underbelly of small town Americana. Throw in a vampire or an intergalactic being beyond our comprehension and there goes the neighborhood.

Inside Mike's fortune cookie, the dying bird probably represents the memory of what happened to Mike in the novel when he was a kid: Pennywise transforms into a giant bird creature, and Mike is reminded of Rodan from Godzilla

There’s no question that the TV version hasn’t aged well in certain respects. It’s cheesy, has a cheap feel, some of the acting is off. But personally, I actually found some scenes in it genuinely creepy, and I did not get the same feeling from the movie. (I also loved the “kiss me fat boy” part, which was both scary and hilarious.) Also, the TV version is generally more faithful to the book. That isn’t always intrinsically a good thing, but I felt the movie left out certain things that harmed its cohesion. (This is especially true for Chapter II, which you’ll see.) I understand why the movie updated the story from the 50s and 80s to the 80s and today, but there’s also something I believe was lost in the transition. Stephen King was very good at painting a picture of the 50s and 60s (when he grew up), including the sexual innocence as well as the casual racism, and I felt those ingredients worked within the story well, which was lost when it was updated to the 80s.

When she said " she loves every single one of them" I was like oooh if she read the book, she would know how much she likes every single one of them.

The movies leave out several critical details from the book. One is that when they were kids and trapped in the sewers fighting Pennywise they find out that he is a multidimensional being as old as the universe. They end up in trouble and figure that love overpowers fear so they all end up taking turns with Beverly to weaken Pennywise.

I honestly though she was going to vomit when the realization hit her.

the memory thing is part of Pennywise's magic essentially. it's his affect on the town. He also affect the adults in the town, causing them to be apathetic, for lack of a better term. favorite character is Bill for me and Bev and Ben. the first part is my fav. Also since it's in the books only. Pennywise's spawn shows up in the Dark Tower series. If either of you are readers, IT and the Dark Tower series are a must. The Dark Tower basically ties in the entire Stephen King Multiverse.

I really like Bev as an adult even more than I like her as a kid, personally. I won't spoil it but I do feel that IT: Chapter Two (2019) explains the memory thing a bit better than this one does because it's done and said slightly differently in that one. I'm not sure how the book explains it because I haven't read it. I think I like the second chapter of the 1990 version better because I feel like much more happens and it's more exciting than the first chapter.

Prince Albert tobacco is sold in tins. It's an old prank, you'd call a store and ask if they had "Prince Albert in a can?" Hence, the rather dated reference even for the time this miniseries was made. I remember my Great-Grandmother used W.E. Garrett & Sons snuff which came in circular cardboard containers with a tin lid. It surprises me that both of these are still produced. My Mom and I once looked thru obituaries and called funeral homes asking to speak with the deceased. Then we would be inconsolable when given the news they were dead . Come to think of it, this explains a lot...
