@1:32 - I watch old TV shows from PB and if you watch a lot of the Columbo or McMillan and Wife episodes, you see them using these car phones a bunch. For the very early 70's, some of the technology available was pretty amazing. One episode of Columbo had a phone system that would read a card and then make a phone call to a patient and leave a prerecorded message as an appointment reminder. All automated. in 1969.

Before I even watch the video, I want to make a comment. Remember "Spencers Gifts"? Back when I was just out of HS, I bought a plastic "car phone" from one of their mall stores. It came complete with a mounting base, handset and fake antenna to stick on your roof. We would pile in the car and drive around the are pretending that we were talking on a real car phone. Those were the days. That was right about the time that pagers were popular.

(new car phone in the 2000's) I can imagine that it would be useful for taxi's, busses and miscellaneous bulk transport (and other work 99% done in a vehicle) would still have a use for this sort of thing, whether it's for breakdowns, new orders, or just double-checking information, but there would still be a cost comparison with normal cell phones

Even for a niche product, that one might have been a little bit overpriced. Even the 400 CAD they asked you for that unit. but thank you for showing this. a nice device, but the fact it's not a "hands free" might be a little bit dangerous for driving

Some additional anecdotal detail on the car phone history. BMW was still putting permanent car phones into their higher end models until 1999 or so. My family had a 1996 328i, a 1997 740i, and later a 1999 740i; all of which had permanent car phones. Both of my parents also had cell phones they carried, but hands free kits were not as common or refined at the time, so I would memorize their work number, their car phone number, and their personal cell number (one of which is now MY current phone number) and guess what they were doing moment to moment so that I could try to reach them if needed. In 2000 my father purchased an E39 M5, and that car both did and didn't come with a car phone. Instead of a permanently mounted phone, it came with......an M Branded StarTAC! This worked exactly as you'd expect. When you were driving you'd plug it into a cradle in the center console and you'd have your car phone, and then when you were done you'd unplug it and go about your life. That phone was such a reliable & convenient that my mother ended up getting one as well, having BMW retrofit her 3-series to accept it, and both of them lived out of those phones until getting smart phones. So yes, at least in the luxury car world, car phones lived on into the 90s for increasingly unjustifiable reasons, but they were definitely there.

Just watched your video. It was a big help. Someone I know has of these they still use that suddenly stopped working. Now they can’t get the cash drawer open. The manual crank you showed seems to be the solution. Is there a drawing or photo or a specification for the shape of it? I don’t have immediate access to the machine or I could just look. I would like to bring a crank with me next time I see them. If not, I guess I will have to either fake it or take measurements and photos of theirs.

Ha, that's fun. Briefcase phones were a real product at one point. According to my dad, one of his step-dads had one in the early 70s. He was a long haul trucker, so he'd routinely be out in the middle of nowhere, Alaska. Weighed some 20-odd pounds (most of which was the battery) and probably had more in common with a shortwave radio than modern cellphone.

The Type 6 keyboard was absolute garbage.. to the point that people left it in the pack and bought adapters for the Type 5 to USB instead. The weak rubber dome keys make extensive typing feel like digging in warm mud. I never had a worse keyboard ever, especially not from a premium vendor. Thankfully, Sun noticed the many complaints and released the Type 7 a few years later, which was more or less a Type 5 with USB controller inside. Also, I'm quite sad that Sun stopped making desktop machines after the Ultra 45.. the T2 CPUs would have been great in developer machines with their many cores.

My Jobo CPP2 was purchased in 1988 and last week the agitator motor stopped working. Upon inspection I found the T 1.25 A fuse was blown. I replaced the fuse but the motor still did not work. The problem was a bad rectifier which was replaced with a $14 USD rectifier. Running smoothly now. The only other problem happened in the late 1990s when I had to replace the water pump impeller shaft that corroded into two pieces. For processing the reservoir is filled with pre-heated water so the CPP2 heater only has to maintain the correct water temperature during processing. My darkroom is controlled to a 15-20% humidity and an ambient temperature between 68 to 75 F year round.

You can just make a Phenelic spacer for the carb and you will never have vapor lock issues. Also the extra height on the carb might also give you some extra torque.

@@hook86 Time for a hood scoop or cowl induction then. Modifying the linkage isn't too hard but you can also put wood close pins on the fuel lines to act as heat sinks. Old hot rodding trick from back in the day. If it doesn't fit you make it fit. Simple.

My unit was leaking, so I finally decided to open it, with the aid of this video. Turns out there's a little spout that was machined to have too deep of a curve and the water would splash back out. I just had to pull out the spout and flatten it a bit. Problem solved! Thank you.
