Thanks for the reply Steven and glad it's useful. It's amazing how many trees you need, even in a small layout, to give a realistic impression of the landscape and having the ability to make large quantities of effective-looking trees quickly and cheaply is essential. Even on my tiny layout there are currently 80 trees and still needs more. Most of them are made by this method, with one or two premium trees dotted in. There are quite a lot of good cheap armatures out there, they just need a little bit of work using polyfibre and flock to really make them shine. All the best with your layout and thanks for taking the time to drop me a reply.

If it's within 1 year of purchase raise a ticket with DCC supplies and get it inspected / repaired under warranty. If it's outside warranty then I've not seen that issue with either of my 73s, but initial things to try would be to strip, clean and lube all the gear train components (bogie gears, Cardan shafts etc.) with a good quality gear lube. The design flaw with this bogie is that you need to use conductive lubricant on the axles / axle bearings, which can be difficult to source. I use the Woodland Scenics dry graphite but you need to be pretty careful using it as it can get everywhere. Hope you get it sorted and all the best.

Good to hear from you and thanks for the kind comments. I enjoyed setting up the various trains for this and the Scotrail dmus really suit the small size of my layout. The Bachmann 158 I’d had my eye on for some time, but at £280 just a bit out my price range - until it turned up on sale for £210. Bargain! All the best again, Colin

Thanks Andy and hope everything good with you over at Sharlston. I really didn't buy much last year - prices really making me think very carefully before any purchase, but very happy with the very diverse range of models I got and they've all been running regularly on the layout. The quality of the paint sheen on the V2 really is one of the best I've ever seen and has inspired me into looking at satin oversprays for my existing models. It's been a lot of work, but I think I've now got a technique that works really well and have transformed a few locos that had flat looking paintwork.

Hi Colin, Lovely work on the layout, the new details really bring the scene to life, I also like how you've done the scenery, the choice of grasses & trees give a really realistic look. The leaves & ground scatter give an "end of summer / autumnal look". I enjoyed the video my friend, a nice mix of layout updates, loco updates and real footage, very good! Sorry for the delay in my comment - being susbscribed to so many channels it's quite easy to miss a video or two !! Take care & all the best.......Andy

Why should we have to bother with all this effort - when Heljan / Bachman run perfectly well straight out of the box - although they don't make a OO Class 73 - so I just went for another Class 33 - Don't Dapol realise what a terrible model this (and don't mention that the BR blue livery version is to dark and the full yellow ends are to 'lemon' in colour !).

Hi James, thanks for the nice comment. I don't think I've got any video of the walls being made. It's Slaters embossed plasticard, airbrushed using Humbrol enamel in grey (brick sheet) or various hues of brown / sand (stone sheet). The mortar is a very dilute solution of acrylic white brushed in, allowed to partially dry for a couple of minutes, then brushed a second time with just water to wash the mortar colour off the surface and into the grooves. This gives a much better contrast between the lighter mortar and the brick / stone surface.

@@Shelfandtabletoplayouts00gauge Yeah it's one of those hobbies which hoovers up lots of time, but looks like for both of us the really big stuff is complete and we've got track and scenery. It's nice being able to chip away at small jobs - the trees took hours and that was a job for the Christmas holidays, but adding details to the street scene has been 20mins here and there. I've just finished upgrading the chassis on the 56 and that's taken quite a bit of time. It (and some other stock) needs weathered and that needs a single 3 hour session - which is difficult to schedule in. For now though, I'm just enjoying running trains - even if it's just for 5min.

Just purchased one of these older models (Brake 3rd - bargain at 6 quid) to go with my ex-L&YR Class 5s and was wanting to improve what is a basic coach and add some bodies to it, so thanks for the tips. This little foray into OO is totally new to me being more interested in n scale North American railroads but do have a big interest in the 'Lanky' - unfortunately the new 4/6 wheeled coaches from Hattons are just a little beyond me at the moment so this seems like an ideal substitute.

Have to agree, real AC electrics never really caught my imagination, but they’re an essential feature of the real network. This and the Bachmann 90 were reluctant purchases that have turned out to be gems of models which just somehow look great on the layout. Only issue is that at £200 a loco I’m much less likely to take a punt on something I’m not totally sure of. At least with Accurascale you feel you’re getting a top quality beautiful model for the money.

Yeah I think it’s the same pickup design in the 52, so this fix should offer a similar improvement. I’ve found that a clean of the axles and pickups with a lubricating switch cleaner like Servisol is usually needed to clean off any oil and dirt. Both my 73s are running sweetly.

Having watched your excellent review I was fortunate to buy a KOYLI Deltic from Rails in one of their ‘buy it now before they’re gone’ type promotions. It’s a superb loco overall, especially the sound, but it’s also a very ‘fragile’ loco. Fragile in the sense that numerous wee super detailing parts have fallen off as the loco has run around my layout. I’ve managed to glue most parts back in place but there are a few pieces I’ve no idea where they’re from. To be fair to Accurascale this is becoming more common in our hobby as I’ve had same ‘issue’ with Hatton’s 66, Hornby & Heljan. I’ve decided not to open the loco to fit a crew as I’m worried about damaging the chains. You’re spot on about fitting the buffer beam. Omg what a faff that is right enough! It took me the best part of an afternoon to fit. Really think all manufacturers should do this. Dapol & Heljan do so hopefully others will follow suit. However, these gripes aside I’m very glad to have the loco in my collection.
@clipperrail8988
@clipperrail8988 Жыл бұрын
Cheers Andy, you did well managing to pick up a KOYLI in the extra stock sale - they sold out in jig time. I guess it's only fragile until all the fragile bits fall off. I haven't even bothered gluing the bits back on, I've seen a lot of feedback that the chains in particular are a pig to get stuck back on - with the risk of getting CA glue on the model. Unless it's something really obvious, I'll be leaving them off and just enjoying a nice-looking, well-running model. I still rate the Dapol 68 as one of the best diesels on the market - solid, beautiful runner, great looking model, the buffer beam detail already fitted and even better it's only £135. Thanks for the comments and enjoy KOYLI.

It is a great model . A step above in detail and silky smooth although I’ve only run it for a short while . Reason is that three of the four bogie chains are hanging loose . I’m not to keen on cementing these back onto the body as like you I’m scared of getting glue in the wrong place . Also I understand if I need to take the body off , presumably it will need lubrication at some point, these chains have to detach . I’ve sent for some black tack that I hope will be sufficiently sticky to reattach these . I have a feeling tjough that this is going to be up there with Hornbys Rocket couplings and Heljan Class 17 buffers as the most infuriating model I have . Like you I’d vote for more robustness
@clipperrail8988
@clipperrail8988 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Russell, yeah I've had issues with the bogie chains, with one one of the detached ones causing derailing - hence why I removed them altogether. I wanted to change the headcode on D9009, but having to undo the chains to remove the body seems too much hassle. I still think they're a minor issue - ultimately they're easily removed and left off, I've not tried to re-glue then, it's very difficult to notice that they're not fitted. They've been pretty regular runners on the layout and despite these very minor issues with detail they've been brilliant models and I'm really happy with them. My suggestion would be Accurascale provide us with these details as extras and allow us to decide which detail parts we want to fit. From memory a lot of the small handrails on the Bachmann Deltics were supplied as extras. Thanks for the comment and hope your Deltic settles in to allow you to enjoy it. All the best, Colin.

Nice heart-felt review and quick session, thank you. looking down your rails I'm wondering if you do the same as me by using direct wire surface ties buried in the ballast between each length of track rather than an under board feed cable using droppers to attach? Regards Julian
@clipperrail8988
@clipperrail8988 2 жыл бұрын
Well spotted on the wires. I’m actually running dc - the layout is so small and I can usually only run one loco per loop. Originally the board was designed to separate into two halves (the silly ideas you have at the design stages!) so I’d wired the track either side of the join before ballasting. The wires run under the board and poke up through holes at the soldering point. Sounds like you’ve used a far more professional approach on your impressive layout. All the best.

I'm sorry but I cant agree regards detail, for the amazing value of this model you can either leave the extra detailing off or knock it off yourself! Finally having models with this level of detail is long overdue and some of us appreciate it! We are a fickle bunch us modellers so its not surprising to see comments of a model actually being too good! Long may it continue and well done Accurascale.

I’m not big on ultra details, but for £160 it doesn’t feel like you’re having to pay extra for it, so in my case if it falls off I won’t replace it, but won’t complain about it. Even without all the tiny extras it’s still an incredible, beautiful, solid, great running model for a cracking price - with or without the detail. I love them both.
