This is seriously mindblowing, the treadle operate laithe is such an underrated machine, the fact you built it so incredibly well and show the process as well is very commendable, you're doing an incredible thing preserving and showcasing this form of art and craft!

My dad hung an old tire cut as a trough under the family grindstone, suspended with some coat hanger wire, and fill that with water and the stone is always wet during the ginding.

I once watched a video of a forest service crew that only used hand saws to buck. The lead woman said if you don't have 6" shavings coming out of the cut your saw is dull.. I've yet to achieve that. I wonder if I need to curve my rakers more.

Hi, I've only ever carved with scouts and I want to make a prop bow ish. Does it matter what kind of wood I use, could I just use a pallet? And I don't have a hatchet or chisel, but I do have an old kitchen knife, as that's the only thing I've every craved with before, and my dad has a hammer and saw. Would a kitchen knife work instead of a chisel? It's for a prop thing, I'm in the UK and on the 20th June I'm leaving my secondary school as I've done my GCSEs, and we do a walk out so I'm going as a video game character and need a bow. Sorry for the long comment, and I know you probably won't respond
@ChopWithChris26 күн бұрын
You know I once lived outside London in West Byfleet 😄. Yes - the type of wood is very important. Here are some types of woods in the UK that will work: ash, hazel, oak, yew, blackthorn, hawthorn. Oak pallet wood will also work. I have video on my channel for that. A knife will work and best to do the final tillering with a file which are cheap to buy. Feel free to ask me questions as guy go. Good luck!
