I grew up 200 metres from the Waterworks. Two things, it's located in South Woodford, not Woodford, not Walthamstow. South Woodford, E18, London Borough of Redbridge. Secondly in over 50 years I've never heard one local person refer to that forest as Walthamstow forest.

Just out of interest, you don't happen to know if this building Copped Hall is the abandoned mansion that featured in James Herbert's book 'Lair'? (The one where giant rats take over parts of Epping Forest). In many ways it fits the bill - located in or near Epping Forest, was damaged by fire in the past, had extensive gardens and a stables. In the book it suggests that the stables and grounds were being used to house pigs in and around 1979. Just a thought. And well done to everyone involved in restoring the place.

I’m afraid I do not know. But I do know that parts of the place were used for pigs. See this volunteer, Arnold, talking about pigs and mushroom farm Copped Hall Stories - Arnolds Recollections kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jZyIfrWImJ29qHU.html

@@HollowayTyre Thanks for getting back to me with a reply. I watched that video you gave the link for and yes, I am now more or less convinced that Copped Hall was one of the settings for the book Lair. If you like horror I recommend it. If I am ever in that neck of the woods I will look to visit this dear old house and am glad to see it restored. Thanks again.

I'm sorry - and I feel your pain (genuinely). I get sick of videos that put music where music isn't needed. However, I felt this shot wasn't sufficiently interesting to warrant merely posting (there are much better videos), and as I was landing I could 'hear' music in my head, hence me adding the track. I take it you're not a Sigur Ros fan then?

London, and indeed most British cities, are unusual in that there are very few grade separated roads/motorways that feed directly into or close to the city centres from outside, which is definitely no bad thing. The real tragedy of the era was that the once world class railway system was eliminated long before the expected replacement road network was completed, or even started in a lot of cases. This leaves us in the unenviable position of the 'worst of both worlds' whereby roads and public transport capacity are both grossly undercapacity for current needs. Hopefully we will get a lot of the railways back in the next few decades.

Living in Rayleigh, that M12 plan looks ideal. We really need a road that goes off the A127/A1245/A130 junction up and round Rayleigh off to Shoebury to bypass Southend

Fun fact. The roads skirting Southend were built with dual lamp standards despite only being single carriageway. A bits of the road were upgraded to dual carriageway later but the bulk remains single carriageway to this day. One problem with Mapin sands was that the mud holds lots of unexpoded ordnance from a century of testing. They cleared a test section, only to find that the mud had started filling up with new undiscovered munitions, because of its fluid nature.
@HollowayTyre

Not a bad idea! I have mixed feelings about the cycle route - sometimes I think it feels more dangerous that when I used to ride up the road. You have to be super aware of traffic turning across you both onto and off of Lea Bridge Road. But I applaud the tracks overall - and the new one being built from Clapton Roundabout to CS1 is great, I'll be using it!

That would have been a bit confusing with the A12 and M12 going to different places! Sounds like it should have been the M127! Those stilts the M11 is built on - they barely look wide enough for a M-way carriageway to pass between them, and don't look particularly high either.
