Secondly, it gives backstory to El but for them to have it that her mother wanted her to find her wasn’t just to catch up. Showing El could choose the lifestyle she had in Hawkins or team up with a lost sister with abilities to use for bad lets the audience know she’s there on her own free will and not as a prisoner she once was.
