The irony is that it is the BEST car they ever made (I have one) and its drives better than any car i have ever known. As i said to a mate, how many VT commodore do you still see on the road = 0, how many AU's do you still see?...

I've driven the 18RG and the 8RB and the 18R, the 18RG is very much a "narrow RPM" engine. It really needs to be in it's RPM range in order to have any benefit over the SOHC version. It only had 2 valves per cyl vs modern DOHC engines with 4 valves per cyl... its kicks the torque up over 1200 RPM past where the 18R torque is. So the HP numbers are misleading because HP is a formula based on torque and RPM... So the 18R is far more responsive in the middle where most of the work is done for a street engine. If you were to race on a track and spend most of the time in a narrow band of the upper RPM range, the18RG is the way to go. I was surprised when my very modified 18R beat the 18RG until I realized that it doesn't have much for mid range torque. It is an impressive looking motor, but was never a great street performer. Just dumping the smog, adding a well tuned Weber carb and you can be in the same power range with better torque in the 18R. They should have made the 18RG DOHC with 4 valves per cyl and fast runner ports for a good street engine like the BEAMS.
@FULLBOAR14 күн бұрын
Yeah I agree with you entirely. The 18R is a better all-round engine. However the 18rg is a beautiful looking motor and really helped to set Toyota in motion with continuing to co-design engines with Yamaha, which eventually led to the best engines ever made(in my opinion) such as the 4age and 2jz.

I have a 1HD FT engine but the sound when it is in motion sounds like an helicopter, what could it be? Once they lowered the pressure on the pump and it seemed like the sound went down but it still sounds, what could be happening? please
@FULLBOAR14 күн бұрын
Could be a leaking exhaust manifold? Very difficult to tell mate, but I wouldn’t expect the injector pump to cause that noise.

Back in the late 90’s I bought an ex taxi, EA Falcon, showing 970,000 Kilos. Drove it for 7 years until a young idiot hit it and wrote it off. Pretty much the only probs I had was the power steer & steering rack leaking. Oh, and when it hit 999,999 kilos, the speedo died !

Any theories on what caused that valve to wear like that?
@FULLBOAR3 ай бұрын
Davo and I have been discussing it since it happened and we reckon potentially the pump was worn before I got it. The pump didn’t show signs of major rust sitting in it, however I am certain that it must have had water sitting in it. Maybe the acidic flood juice has etched the surfaces inside the pump, further increasing pumping losses. Either way we cannot pin-point the issue, but I will admit that the flood water was probably the culprit.

You can get a new pump fairly easy from memory, or at least a rebuild kit. Other wise you can blank it off and use a low pressure electric fuel pump.

They have aged like a fine wine. The rear quarter panel from the c pillar is a work of art in my opinion. And contrary to popular opinion, I think the water-fall grille is the best one.
@bruceburns16725 ай бұрын
@@FULLBOAR Yes I absolutely and categorically agree, the waterfall grill was perfection for the overall look and design of the car, the only fault I would agree to is the stance, it could have been an inch lower, also the wheel arches could have been filled a bit more with bigger wheels or less cutout if you get what I'm on about.

Your Hilux would have come new with either the 18R-C (if sold new in Vic or NSW) or the 18R (if sold anywhere else in Australia). This was something to do with the alpine environments in those states. The 18R-C was essentially just the 18R with more pollution gear on it.
