Just a couple points you didn't show off. What happens when you deconstruct a rover. Last I checked, you didn't get any materials back. And in a multiplayer environment, they wont move, at all.
@OwnerOfTheCosmos
@OwnerOfTheCosmos 8 сағат бұрын
Huh, didn't know that was something to consider, but I just tested, and indeed: Deconstructing both (One Hand Drill action each.) dropped the gas canisters, the batteries, and the (type of) kit that had been used to make them. Tried to remake the cargo Rover with that then: It was asking for materials again - materials I had not gotten back! ---- Multiplayer: Had tons of bad sync issues that had been worked on and improved a lot, but I guess since the Rovers aren't officially in the game, those changes were never also considered for them.

The view needs to be closer to the windshield. Yes many would want 3rd person but I'd simply just prefer focus to be on the windshield and not on your own knees and hands (especially since your hands aren't even on a steering mechanism). The smaller one had a better view. Leave the colors and cutsie alone. Maybe they could have alternatives for people but many like that while most things are technical and serious in the game, they also have some fun and colorful things. Both have value.

Closer to windshield: That would work, since we can just widen the FOV with hotkeys if need be. - The flashlight should definitely move with the view=head, guess they just forgot that. I see your valid point about the colors and cutesy, but I think that the priorities speak against it: Top priority is money that RocketWerkz are still bleeding on Stationeers. Its graphics are clearly inferior anyway to high end games these days, so that's a negative point - but its graphics are basically all procedural, the world isn't a baked jungle but what you make it to be. So, since everything has meaning and is modular, such rather tech oriented graphics can easily be forgiven (if not even be appreciated). The human characters though do not have that bonus, and someone coming from the outside doesn't know yet how deep and technical Stationeers is, so they are likely to think something like: "Inferior cutesy imitator wants big bucks? - Nah." They clash with the idea of a high tech simulation. But let's say ... ... let's say that people would rather buy it BECAUSE of those graphics. Which in my opinion really don't fit the tech stuff. Then they buy it, find that the game is nothing like those cute colorful appearances for the most part, and they might even refund it because of clashing expectations.

Absolutely. 3 hands for example would make a BIG difference, but I'm convinced that won't come. Instead, my hopes are for hotkeys for the tools. And someone suggested today that LMB should be for left hand, RMB for right hand, and the so-far-RMB function should be via CTRL or SHIFT etc. And here's an idea I had to day: Tool holders on the wall could also help: I have e.g. a chip where I need to adjust the screw every once in a while. If I could just pluck a screwdriver from the wall, that would be pretty awesome.

Or harder for the GOATS ie cowsareevil, Elmo shadowdrake and you. Let’s be honest if ur new to this game…it’s a MASSIVE learning curve w/o KZfaq tutorials. Now I would like to add on to the customization with ice/coal toggle choice of atmosphere (they will need to a warning that some atmospheres will be unplayable) Lastly unless I missed it…there’s no solid fuel gen….🤔

Now the incoming terrain replacement later this year (finite&diverse&highres), eventual nuclear power, standing water, and (not firmly planned but aspired since there's a popular mod) terraforming, then also eventually surgery (It's Space Station 13 inspired, after all.) ... PROMISING! ---- The ice/coal toggle is a good idea. ---- Just now I made a new Moon world (Easy) and found the Solid Fuel Generator in the crate with the two cable coils. It's also visible at 7:50.

Well - just like when they tell you in that little popup when you try to play the tutorials (Which work well, recommended!), you can switch the game's version with Steam. Right mouse button on game in library, properties, betas, and then you have a dropdown. I selected "beta", so that I always have the newest stuff. Been playing (and recording vids) like this for months. - Maybe turn off autosave so that you're in control of when (and when not) the game saves. Because the result will be a different version, so if you wanna go back, that may or may not cause problems with a savegame. Of course you could load an older version of that save if you're back on the main branch, in case the beta save doesn't work in that older version.

Would look pretty cool in multiplayer, all these fingers stabbing the darkness. They simultaneously reduced the amount of coal. But yes, it feels a bit rich. I mean, Vulcan is still the most engineering-rich planet (making water, cooling it down, ...), so having more toys to play with like a tank of super cold nitrogen inspires, good to have that right from the start. Well, it's "pass 1", so they'll probably tweak this. Maybe it's like a thought process: First you explore your potential directions, then you pick one. Pass 1 would be the "all options on the table" of this. I guess.

7:29 - I used your recommendation to only turn on the recycler when the import slot is full. That also makes the recycler only spit out full stacks of processed biomass. I then programmed the centrifuge to open if reagents = 200. That way, the centrifuge spits out a full stack of charcoal into the arc furnace. No extra stacker needed. What I then did, is prgramm a stacker set to 1 item to release a single piece of coal into the solid fuel generator when the battery charge is below 50% - That way, my coal gets used in a slow and measured way and is not wasted. I am trying to limit the use of solar panels and run a plant based economy on my first serious Mars run - bio power, bio water - it is big fun so far.
@OwnerOfTheCosmos
@OwnerOfTheCosmos 5 күн бұрын
Good idea with the 1 item coal Stacker, that's outside-the-box thinking! Hm, but so far, I did it like this: Just have an unceasing stream of 50-stacks of coal to the generator, but only turn it on (via its Logic connection) when I need extra power. That should have the same effect, no? Or does this waste coal all the time, because me turning it off may cut off the power, but the currently ongoing 1 coal ore of the full stack will still be burning? Plant-based power, not bad, haven't tried that yet. Maybe I could check its effectiveness with the greenhouse of this video series.

The end where the pipe cowl or active vent should enclosed to maximize air flow with the wind generators in the green house (wind tunnel effect)

I'm at 1:39:18 while writing this. Regarding the clock: - why not use a tick counter? @OwnerOfTheCosmos
@OwnerOfTheCosmos 8 күн бұрын
Tick counter: True! And that's what I eventually resorted to in the next episode (E5). It's really simple and even reliable if the registers are not being initialized, because their values are persistent between code changes / export / chip removal&plugin / save&load. This is so simple and easy that I even reuse that in a second room later in the series. Horz angle: Sounds like a good idea, but I just investigated: The range from -180 to 180 (Which I could adjust to 0 to 360.) isn't traversed evenly, it slows down and accelerates strongly, so I don't see how I could turn it into a 5 section (20<->100 minutes) statement for the clock.

@@OwnerOfTheCosmos the acceleration of hory angle sounds like a bug. Unless the a axle of the planet is tilted. Then the vert angle should have a anti proportional acceleration. And you should be able to math the sh*t out of it to get to the rotation. But a tic counter is much simpler than that.

@OwnerOfTheCosmos
@OwnerOfTheCosmos 10 күн бұрын
Yep, Ostranauts is very interesting. I was wondering why the air in my ship was too thin to breathe, then after asking in the forum understood that me tossing my found crap all over the place had landed a bottle under the air vent's output, so it had been filled with ginormous pressure (Bottles not yet simulated properly at the time.) instead of breathing into the room. This whole setting in a space station with NPCs - but you can still use the wrench on everything e.g. oxygen canisters and life support - is pretty awesome! Last touched it 1/2 year ago. At the time, the graphics were still too crappy (particularly *too rough*, the resolution just too low; beauty isn't a killer criterion for me, particularly in a simulation game), things were too unclear (See bottle vent problem.), so I'll wait until it's better. This game randomly coincided with me having the idea how awesome a game would be where you are in 3D 1st person on a space or planetary station where people are born and grow up and live - a human civilization outpost. But the station/habitat is *simulated!* And things can be engineered. This was before I actually found into Stationeers. ---- How stellar would that be to live in a TheSims first person with agency reality with other persons in a simulated station with tasks and jobs and some story campaign aspects here and there, and this combined with engineering capability kinda like Stationeers.

I'm interested in how nice you can make things look in this game, I wasn't too sold on visible wires on the floor in previous videos but it's looking nice now. Also the wire joints creates a "triangle" not sure if I like that but it's a minor detail. I also hope there will be sewage water that you can clean or just dump outside with consequences
@OwnerOfTheCosmos
@OwnerOfTheCosmos 11 күн бұрын
My way of making things look nice is still just the most time-saving primitive version: Rectangular box rooms all made of windows, flat color walls (usually black), spray-painted cables and devices (and some nice lights) for decoration. I've never been a creative base-builder, e.g. in Minecraft I always played the survival aspects ... and then got bored once I had my diamond stuff and a mob grinder. Stationeers seems to have a lot of decoration potential (various kinds of walls and furniture), from the items I've seen and the stations I glanced on Discord. I've seen some really stations, e.g. a skyscraper-like building where everything was neatly fit on one of the many floors. Yep, the cable joints are practical, made abstract for (relatively) simple implementation and handling. I mean, you can hide all cables if you like. The pro station you can see in the official Stationeers tutorial doesn't have cables, as far as I remember. There is "sewage water": If you shower, that creates Polluted Water, and there's a charcoal-based Water Purifier. Charcoal is a result of furnaced biomatter, not just random old coal ore. *There are no standing liquids yet in Stationeers!* The game had this once, then it was removed (It's still Early Access, after all.), but they plan on implementing it again. That will come in handy when they implement the nuclear stuff that is also planned.

You got two rules mixed up. The probability of a fair dice landing on 6 is always 1/6 since a dice throw is a distinct event that doesn't influence or get influenced by other throws. The law of large numbers tells us about statistical distribution. The probability to not hit a single 6 in 6000 throws is extremely small, but it can happen and the probability to hit a 6 is unchanged at 1/6 for every throw. If you had a statistical pool of results and every time you throw the dice you're pulling a result out of that pool, you'd be right, that the likelyhood of 6 occurring would change. But since two throws are completely separate events, and there is no such pool, you only ever get the single throw chance. The distribution of results only tells you about how lilely a dice is fair after the fact.
@OwnerOfTheCosmos
@OwnerOfTheCosmos 11 күн бұрын
Hm, but is that supposed to be a contradiction of my take? It seems to confirm that if a 6 didn't occur for a long time, a 6 is more likely to occur soon (Though not predicable with certainty, of course).
@thehungryhippy
@thehungryhippy 3 күн бұрын
6 is just as likely to occur no matter what happened before. If you had 6000 throws with no 6 (extremely rare) the probability of your next roll being a 6 is still 1 in 6. True randomness doesn't intuitively feel random to us. Our intuition is very flawed. This is the reason that the shuffle feature of music players isn't truly random anymore. When iTunes first came on the scene, the masses had thousands of songs on a single device for the first time. People were annoyed that shuffle mode played the same song multiple times in a playthrough or even in a row. Sometimes it felt like a single artist was playing more than others. Intuition told me that the next to song couldn't possibly be Tom Petty's You Don't Know How it Feels since I already heard it 5 times in the last hour. When I heard it for the 6th time, I assumed it was a bug when in fact the chance of the next setting being Tom Petty was always 1 in 1000 (assuming 1000 songs). If you Google "iPod shuffle song is not random enough", you'll see a post on the Apple forums from 2005 with this exact complaint. Now I'm in 2024, music services (and often times games) use algorithms to avoid actual randomness to align with your intuition. Stationeers (being more stimulation than game) certainly won't be hand tuned to "feel" more intuitive.

Regarding demos, I have been told by a developer that it is a well documented fact that they just reduce sales. "Vacuum is either hot nor cold." This is not realty true while a vacuum prevents all Conduction solid objects are also subject to Thermal Radiation. While we mostly ignore thermal radiation as the ambient temperatures on earth fall in a fairly similar range they fluctuate far more wildly in space. If you did not die to the pressure differential, I believe that space around earth orbit, when in sunlight would heat you up to about 120C so would feel pretty hot. But without the sun in deep space you would lose about 2C in per ten minutes so would presumably feel like being out and about in winter without a jacket. Something your body can condensate for until it runs out of calories, but a significant cold.

nice vid but one thing. when you do vids like this don't show them the bad/hacky way of doing things first aka putting items into things thru walls. show the right way then explain the bad/hacky way and why they shouldn't depend on it. this means your vid will stay valid for longer if say they fix or change preventing adding things thru solid walls.

Good thought. I have gotten used to it so much - it would be literally a gamechanger for me if they'd properify those interactions. Hm, I do quite a few things through the glass - coal in the burner, material in the furnace, triggering the furnace. And the occasional efficient but ultimately unnecessary tossing of ingots and such through windows, less relevant. Will keep it in mind.

2:00:00 - press double F to quickly holster a tool into the toolbelt. I also use the mouse wheel + F a lot to quick switch tools. The mousewheel highlights different slots in the open inventory items. For example, I always have the tablet in the first slot in the toolbelt. Scroll to it, press F to quickly check atmo. Double F to holster it back in the first slot.

Ye, incidentally I have just started being more efficient about this via Episode 7-9, where I use double-click a lot. I don't like the double-key (which is C for me, not F, changed a lot of things around) for some reason, but the click works for me. Found out that double-clicking a thing in the inventory will remember where it came from when it then gives that into your hand, so if it came from the mining belt, and you then close it, the next double-click on it in your hand will return it into the hidden belt. If however you had dragged it from there into your hand and then close the belt, the double-click will transport it into a meaningful other field in your inventory (tool if possible, else other).

You can surely play without coding, but playing entirely without *automation* isn't easy. I mean ... what do you want to achieve? A Moon base where you can breathe and where your plants grow and you can drink? No automation required. Depending on how deep you want to go into the game, you will feel the hard need for some automation. And then ... ... you can use Logic chips (Meaning: NO programming.) to make that happen. This video shows why you'd want automation (e.g. to get 100x more out of your solar panels) and shows the first steps into programming: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y7-SnphzqMumk5c.html (I have several MIPS programming introduction videos.)

I'm searching for a game to practice reliability approaches in engineering. So my question is: random failures, cascading failures, self-diagnosis info, repair bots. Are they in the game? Are they planned? Could they be modded in?
@OwnerOfTheCosmos
@OwnerOfTheCosmos 13 күн бұрын
AIMEe is only a mining bot, I think. Never touched it, and that's just an oversight, still gotta do that. I have no knowledge about "binary modding", which some people do and achieve very interesting things, but my take is that modding something as complex as robots in, that could navigate and interact with the world, is beyond that - but again, I don't know. Random failures: No, not random. Only emergent from simulation, which doesn't have something like "pipe age" or rust, which could amount to random failure. However, you'll be standing in your base and will all of a sudden hear a pipe creak, because it's taking damage, then you run over to the furnace that you had forgotten to empty (or whose gasses/heat you wanted to keep around), whose temperature is now down far enough that the remaining high pressure caused some gases to condense, and gas pipes are allergic to liquids in Stationeers - a gameplay choice that I do not object to, it's interesting, but some others dislike the gas/liquid pipe distinction. Or a battery died, so the airlock now has no power, which is why "we all" have an APC (switch with buffer battery) in there - which is an engineering reliability approach. Maybe there was cable burnout because the load grew too much and you didn't protect with a fuse (focused burnout) or transformer (brownout instead of burnout). Or your plants died because the station now has -50°C because your custom cooling solution started running - but didn't stop because an error was introduced in the source code during that time, by code change or by changing the cable network so a required device is no longer there, which means that a reliability approach could be to separate out vital things instead of conveniently lumping them all together. Cascading failures can surely happen - see plant example. It's emergent. Depends on what you built. Self-diagnosis info: All devices have logic values that you can read or write, and you can also install pipe analyzers and gas sensors, so you could react to liquids in pipes building, or to pollutant or fire in the room, could program all that behavior freely in Stationeers' assembly language, etc. - In my playthrough yesterday, I expanded my furnace pipe before the valve (the part that stays under pressure until I vent) to reach outside the station - and slapped a Passive Liquid Drain on it, so if liquids would build, they'd automatically vent to the outside. That sounds exactly like the kind of thing you're looking for, I think. I don't know about reliability approaches in engineering, but I guess that you could find what you seek in this game.

@@OwnerOfTheCosmos Thank you for your answer. It looks like the game has most of what I need. My guess is that if a game has the right kind of failures modelled at all, random failures can be modded in with relative ease. Depends on the game though. Worth checking out.

If you mean the game, my understanding is that it's very unlike Space Engineers. It was inspired by Space Station 13 and has very deep simulation/programming/automation. If Space Engineers had this level of simulation, I'd play it (It's in my library.), but it seemed too simplistic to me.

Well, honestly I have no reference of how unique or novel this might be. My take is that most people will just not go through the efforts of making such a thing when you can just slap a few Active Vents or even [Large] Powered Vents on the wall with a console, done. So many sections to connect, so many outdoor airlocks, so most will probably just be standard, is my assumption. I also assume that people have experimented, engineered, MIPS-programmed quite sophisticated airlocks, and a 1x1x1 with 4 doors is a very obvious target, I guess.

I have recently gotten to appreciate the complete reboot of awareness that seems to come with half an hour of napping during the day ... as suggested by Stationeers' unrelenting "Nights ... I'm saying maybe just a bit of sleep after work might realign you to your center, so you could enjoy a couple of hours of Stationeers after work, instead of work insisting to stay with you somehow.
