Tried the Wilson Triad at the beginning of this season after playing the Srixon Z Star XV for the last year or two. There's something about the Wilson ball that just works for me. Great off the tee, feels great with irons and is wonderful on & around the greens. I've used it exclusively this year and don't see myself changing anytime soon. At $34.99 a dozen it's an incredible value. Also, I tend to stray from "norms" and the "usual suspects" brands and like something different. But only IF they work. Guarantee I'm the only guy in my foursome gaming a Wilson ball, and I kinda dig that. Coincidentally, I just picked up a set of Wilson Staff CB irons this year and they too are ridiculously fantastic. Using the ball had nothing to do with moving to them as my iron choice, but it's pretty neat that after demoing lots of irons as I considered a new set AND putting a few different balls in play to find what's right for my game, I wound up in Wilson products for both - because they're just damn good. I guess I'm a Wilson guy? Never saw that coming.

If you were to use the G20 (introduced in 2012) instead of the G10 (intro 2007) I think that the results would have shown very little difference. G20 shape is much different than the g10 and I suspect much better MOI. I just did my own test yesterday, taking my old G20 to the range VS several of my newer drivers and the G20 in going back into my bag. I used a Swing Caddie SC200 to monitor carry/smash/swing speed and my G20 was giving me 2-5 yards more carry and more consistently hit down the middle.

What irons/hybrids would you recommend for ultra high handicapper (33) with very high swing speeds. Fats, thins, tops, big slice, cant close club face, lessons and countless drills arent working. Swing goes back to old swing even after 1000's of reps. I'm actually getting worse with more practice. I have game improvement clubs. When i do strike them well i have no problem sticking greens. My spin and launch angle is a bit too high and landing angle on the top end of acceptable with my clubs. In the end distance makes no difference to me. I want to hit the ball im play and lower my scores. Is there a magic club? I dont care at all about how it looks. Im oretty giod with 8 iron thru gap wedge and two putt a lot. Short game is good but anything 7 iron and over is just out of control in all ways.

@todaysgolfer 13 күн бұрын
There isn't a magic club out there Rob, sorry. But if you have plenty of speed, you don't need to worry about playing strong or standard lofts you certainly don't need HL models. If we were spending our own money we'd be looking models like the Ping G430, TaylorMade Qi and Callaway AI Smoke, all of which are good forgiving models. Hope that helps.

Can you explain the shot area results in more detail please? It's not as if pro's can't consistently put tour balls on a dime, despite some of them getting a bad result here. Doesn't make much sense to me.
@R6shark214
@R6shark214 19 күн бұрын
He’s talking about the area of dispersion. Saying ball “A” is landing within an area of “X”square yards consistently. They’re just showing that under these conditions ball “A” is landing consistently within this area. We all know in real world conditions wind and minor variations in ball striking will effect dispersion but these numbers are under laboratory conditions. Hope this helps…🤷🏼‍♂️
@symboh6492

@@R6shark214 Thanks, still though the Pro V1 having a 21 Sq yd area with PW doesn't add up, with what I would expect is a precise robot swing. That's massive.
@todaysgolfer
@todaysgolfer 13 күн бұрын
The shot area is the difference between the longest to shortest shot multiplied by the furthest left to the furthest right. There's a comment below saying that 21 sq yds is huge, it really isn't that big when you realise that would be a 3.5 yard drop of from longest to shortest and a 6 yard left to right dispersion. It's important to understand too that not all tour balls are made on the same lines that make the balls we consumers buy. Very often tour balls are made on separate lines. Hope that helps.

If I’m a mid handicapper that’s back on the market for clubs ( waiting to hear if TM is going to warranty my caved face p790s ) that’s looking at clubs is it a bad idea to be looking at say the qi10 irons / hybrid set. Something I find really helpful is to use a 1-2-3-4 count for the driver. The backswing starts on the 1, the contact happens on the 4. The count for irons is 1-2-3. Chip shots are 1-2 (or "tick-tock").

I’ve just ordered a set of Srixon’s after finding it a bit of a struggle with my players irons (getting older!). I tried most of the irons suggested here but the Srixon iron had a good compromise with what I’m used to in an iron. I can’t wait to get my hands on them. By the way, do you not think shaft selection would have a big differentiator when it comes to performance? I’m wondering if the irons in the test were fitted for tester. It might have had an effect on the overall dispersion. I know that when I was going through the fitting process we found a shaft that really tightened up my shots to almost blanket size!
@todaysgolfer
@todaysgolfer 26 күн бұрын
Good choice Martin Srixon irons are really solid. Absolutely shaft would make a difference, our view is though we test the stock option that manufacturers produce, if we fitted them all with the same shaft we would end up testing some products in a set-up that wouldn't be available to buy. Enjoy the new set.

Good morning, Doesn't it seem strange to you that Wilson is placed in the center of the image on the three segments,Tour, Player, 2 pieces? And what about the numbers? How could Wilson's competing brands let Wilson put such a gap on dispersion? The Triad and the Staff have a dispersion of between 17.2 and 18.7 sq yds and the Pro V1, the ball most played by pro on the tour, takes a beating with 40.5 sq yds? The TP5 45.5 yds? Be serious either your testing process is completely random or you are just being paid by Wilson. These results are impossible... Callaway, Titleist will not leave such inefficient balls on the market and the pros will only play Wilson Staff... Golf is a target game, how can we accept that the ball we play generates twice as much dispersion? Ridiculous...
@todaysgolfer
@todaysgolfer 28 күн бұрын
Thanks for your input, we thought the same thing as you. Then we discovered some of the major tour brands make their tour balls away from their main production lines, they only do this to keep a closer eye on tolerances and consistency. All of the balls tested here are retail models, not made for tour.

Simon and Neil, thanks for the excellent review of Cobra's new 3D printed irons. In listening to your presentation I found myself wondering what Cobra's strategy is for these irons and why they only produced 500 sets. Are they waiting to see if there's sufficient demand at the $3K price point before scaling up production? Do 3D irons take considerably more time to manufacture? Are there more or less quality control issues w/ 3D? And where does Cobra see the 3D irons fitting in their existing lineup (between Forged Tec X and Forged Tec)? Sorry for all the questions -- I'm just really curious what the long term plan is. I'm guessing we'll see other manufacturers coming out w/ their own 3D irons fairly soon -- and at much lower price points. Thanks again for the great content.

Thanks Brian, like you we have a ton of questions around what the future could hold. This does appear to be really interesting tech. Our gut feel is that this could just be a trial run, dipping their toe in the water to gauge reaction. If the feedback is positive there will need to be significant investment into the 3D printers that can create products in this way. When there is costs will fall, to what extent we don't yet know, but perhaps in a similar way to how the cost of a set of PXG's has dropped significantly over time. We feel it's really telling about how Cobra say they could go much lighter for the lattice network inside, they've just used this design (it's twice as heavy as it needs to be to support the face etc) as it gives a forged iron sound/feel. If you put a much lighter version into a set of game improver irons it would be possible to get a set of much more forgiving irons without going bigger. That's an idea that sounds very exciting for average club golfers.
