The gold confiscation is why I consider FDR to be one of the worst U.S. presidents. He did other things too, as well as wrongly getting credit for ending the Great Depression.

At this point it doesn't matter what kind of gold you collect as long as you're trading in your dollars for gold and silver, is the important factor at hand. The dollar is dying.

People didn't start to "hoard" gold during the Depression. People smartly lost confidence in the monetary system and the banks, and began to redeem their gold notes and withdraw their specie coins from the banks. This prudent action was classified by our enemies as "hoarding," and led to the end of real money in the US.
@LaurenTGage
@LaurenTGage Күн бұрын
Excellent point. Did you see the following quote from the book "The Great Taking:" "Apparently all the U.S. public was now the enemy. Think about this. People who were simply protecting themselves and their families from the actions of the Federal Reserve System were accused of hoarding gold, and literally criminalized if they persisted in doing so. The rationale is incredible: You are hoarding gold, so we will take it and do what with it? Hoard it! As we have seen, once they had taken the gold of the public, they did not then use the resource to expand credit. People remained in a debt trap. The deprivation continued and even worsened. Clearly, the need to expand credit served only as a pretext for the confiscation of the public’s gold, which was the real premeditated objective."

Nice overview on pre-1933 gold coins. Over here in Europe these coins tend to have high premium, though. In Europe the Latin Monetary Union 20 Franc/Lire/Drachmai coins are the equivalent to pre-1933 (the Swiss 20 Franc being the most recognizable), often traded close to spot and highly liquid. But there are other coins: in The Netherlands the 10 guilder coin is very popular (especially the 1897 version), the German 20 Mark and the globally recognized British Sovereign.

One thing I do is sweep my savings accounts and CD accounts once a year in October and add my Alaska Permanant Fund Dividend and buy gold. As of today I have just over 6150 ounces of silver and 210 ounces of gold. Ive been doing this since the 90s. Ive surpassed my gold holding's goal. Still need another 350 ounces of silver. When I started my goal was to acquire 100 ounces of silver for every year of life up to age 65 (6500 ounces). And acquire 2 ounces of gold for every year of life up to age 65 (130 ounces). These goals upon retirement at age 65 on average, if you liquidate these holdings over 20 years would equal the average Social Security check. I have savings in addition to the PM holdings as well as other investments but almost 40% of my total net worth is in gold and silver.

@@LaurenTGage Keep an eye open for good deals in gold and silver. As a general rule I only buy US minted gold. Over half my holdings are 1 ounce American Gold Eagles and the rest is in $20 AU Liberty's and Saints. In addition there is an anomaly happening right now where US minted Pre-1933 MS 62 $20 gold Liberty's and Saints are selling for LESS than a gold eagle. This shouldnt be happening. One reason it is, is because Pre-1933 US gold cant be held in an IRA but the bullion Gold Eagles can be. Any time you can get pre-1933 US gold near the same price as a gold eagle I'll take the graded pre-1933s every time. You might want to check out some of my videos because I did a few on this topic several years back. Be careful with Mike Maloney. He is a precious metals salesman and will pick every argument speaking for his merchandise. Although the statement that currency isn't a store of value anymore (since 1971 to be specific) is true, the Federal Reserve not being a government agency is not. The Federal Reserve System was created by an act of Congress and the board of governors of the FED is appointed by the President and concurred by the Senate. That's a government agency, no matter if commercial banks are required to have stake in the Federal Reserve System or not. Furthermore, after subtracting costs only, profits the Federal Reserve System makes goes to the Treasury Department. Have a look at Lyn Alden's video titled "How Money & Banking Work". Lyn is a bit heavily in favor of Bitcoin for my taste, but it doesn't detract from her intellectual honesty. I've just finished her book and it's well worth it. As dollars, euro's, yen and so forth aren't stores of value anymore means we have to resort to other means to transport value through larger periods of time: stocks, a bit of bonds, precious metals, real estate. But it does require a bit more effort. Furthermore, there are some arguments for flexibility in the amount of currency. Inflation/deflation during the gold standard was much more volatile than it is now. The amount of gold is relatively fixed compared to bursts in productivity gains through technological breakthroughs (railroad, automation, internet) or a sudden increase in population (after WWII). A fixed amount of currency and productivity development going in fits and starts has some pretty nasty side effects. Here as well, diversification is key. Having some currency at hand also is an asset, as an emergency fund for example, but not as a store of value. For storing value a mix of different asset classes is better: stocks for when times are good, bonds for when there are some economic headwinds and some tangible assets such as gold for when times are bad. Think of currency and stores of value as oil and gas in a car. Currency is the oil lubricating the engine and the stores of value are the gas that provides the power. You need both in different amounts to run it smoothly.

I was thinking about the Federal Reserve and that I must gain a better understanding of its structure and inner workings. Lyn Alden's video was very informative and I appreciate that direction. I see that Alden sees Bitcoin as a solution. I'm more pessimistic about government interventions constraining Bitcoin and any CBDCs. I don't like CBDCs, particularly retail CBDCs. I'll look at Lyn Alden's book! I think the economy would be in much worse present shape without the flexibility of printing currency and raising the debt ceiling, but I don't think that the ability to continue inflating currency and raising the debt ceiling is a long-term solution. These are excellent notes from you with value weighable in gold. :)

I have so enjoyed your last two videos, but if I may take it one step further... The wealth one earns through ones' effort should only be traded by mutual agreement for another persons wealth (which, by definition, they also accrued through their own effort). That system served mankind well for thousands of years. My effort, traded for your effort. Why should I trade my effort for the Fed's click of a keyboard to create currency? Unfortunately, almost everyone is doing just that. I am glad people like you are putting this message out there :)

One of the most helpful frameworks to use when in doubt to (not) buy something is the hierarchy of needs according to Maslow. A roof over your head, food on the table and clothes to wear are simply necessities. For me, a good bicycle may not be a necessity, but is something that provides me a lot of fulfillment. Currently I'm still working with the portfolio I mentioned earlier. The US stock market is indeed overvalued, but that's mainly because of a handful of companies which are grossly overvalued. Equal weighted ETFs and international stocks are a bit highly valued, but not excessively. Have a look at the PE-ratio of the S&P500 and several equal weighted and international ETFs.
@LaurenTGage
@LaurenTGage 13 күн бұрын
Hi Cycling Philosopher! Yes, definitely Maslow's hierarchy. For me, it's books and now precious metals before new clothes. :) At one point, my husband wrote a program for me that applied all of my math and formulas to the entire stock market. It worked and I was able to give each stock my own valuation that played out very well. I'm no longer trusting my past education as it sits which is why I'm looking at the stock market so differently now. I've got several new books to read and rabbit holes to explore. Once I navigate this maze, I'm hoping to combine my old and new knowledge and thinking to be share worthy. At that point, I will re-look at the P/E ratios again hopefully with more enthusiasm. Otherwise, I'm currently leaning towards "If I don't hold it, it's not really mine."

@@LaurenTGage I wonder what specifically about your past eduction doesn't sit well with you and what happened that makes you look at the stock market differently. My guess would be you're not the only one with doubts. Beware that solely focussing on tangible assets basically is a 'fear only' play and, thereby, not diversified. This increases the risk you're taking financially.
@LaurenTGage

That's a great question that I'm working to answer for myself. After our health shake-up (2021), the medical industry looked very different to me and began my questioning of my thoughts and beliefs on everything. Since 2020, the markets haven't followed as I would have expected. Currently, with interest rates rising, global uncertainties increasing, and a very unusual presidential election scenario approaching to put it mildly, I don't understand how the U.S. stock market continues to grow to what looks more and more overvalued to me. I promise I won't focus solely on tangible assets long-term and will be sure to balance the allocation. I have unfortunately (fortunately?) become more risk averse, but will use that to focus on understanding precious metals as a hedge, but not a total basket. You're comments are always appreciated and a voice of intelligent reason that I value highly.

We're just starting out and it's mostly me and my youngest learning together. Your videos are so well-made and informative. Thank you for your comment and encouragement. Both are greatly appreciated!

I'm partial to the Perth Mint coins. Not as well received as Maples when selling, but I buy what I like. I can't justify the premiums on Eagles; however, everybody recognizes them from young to old.

I think the American Eagles and Maples were the first coins I heard of. I had no idea there were so many different types including coins, bars, poured, etc... I'm glad you buy what you like. I think it helps make saving money and investing more enjoyable and long lasting. I had no idea about this world of coins and numismatics until very recently. It's amazing. Thank you very much for commenting.

When I was young gas was 17 cents so you could buy a gallon for a quarter. That same quarter could still buy a gallon.

Well, sometimes it's a good idea to buy a home and sometimes not. The benefits you mention are indeed benefits. But there are drawbacks as well. If you're not sure you're staying at a location for long, renting is a good option. The costs for legal fees associated with buying and the costs for hiring a real estate agent you'll never regain. It is an often made mistake to compare rent vs mortgage payments. Rent is the most you pay, while mortgage is the minimum payment to own a home. There are a couple of unrecoverable costs associated with owning a home that you don't have renting: 0.5-1% of the value of the home for maintenance each year, property taxes and insurance costs. These unrecoverable costs also go up with inflation. For a fair comparison to assess whether buying a home is a good idea or not you have to compare the interest payments (not the principal) + all unrecoverable costs to the amount of rent you would pay for an equivalent home. I believe it was Ben Felix who argued that there is rule-of-thumb: if the annual rent is less than 4% of the buy price of a home, then it makes more sense to rent. A home is both an asset and a liability.

Hi @cyclingphilosopher8798. Thank you for your great comment. At the end of most people's lives though, if they had bought a home, they would have some forced savings that otherwise might not be there even though a home is both an asset and a liability. Renting often has some similar maintenance costs as well. When we were traveling, we were responsible for lawn care, snow removal, carpet cleaning, bathroom re-grouting, light bulbs, general maintenance, very expensive pet fees, etc. These costs were additional, required to rent, and not taken care of by the various leasing companies. Sometimes renting might be the best choice, and that would possibly be when someone is needing to move within a short period of time. Sometimes even in that situation, keeping a home and renting it out (if possible) could still be a best financial decision as a hedge. I've learned of many people who sold their home to travel or move, and then prices or interest rates went up, and they were then priced out or left without a real estate hedged investment. If you run the interest payments, principal, and all unrecoverable costs for renting vs. buying, considering over an entire 30 years, the monthly outflow might be 4%+ less renting vs. buying, but unless it's a significant amount that is invested well with good results vs. spent, it may or may not be equivalent to the equity plus inflation adjusted price of the real property owned over time. It's my perspective that at the end of 30 years, you either have a paid off house worth something, or just more rent payments and still maintenance responsibilities and costs to look forward to. With renting, there will always be a rent payment and I haven't seen rent prices go down. When owning a home, you can someday eliminate the principal and interest portion of a monthly living expense, and I think that net will be a lower monthly expense than future rental fees because these total rental fees will have to include and pass down increased taxes, insurance, maintenance, etc. which may erode any real savings from renting in the long run. Even if taxes are very high, having a property to sell in order to move to a less expensive area could also be beneficial. From an emotional perspective, while traveling, we had to rent several different types of residences and living in the rentals had a very different feeling for me from being in my own home that I didn't enjoy, so that's an important non-financial reason for me to prefer home ownership. For my family, I'm strongly recommending my children work to be homeowners, investors, savers, and business owners. It's still my preference for them.
