Thanks for posting a well-done interesting video! That appears to be a well built and superbly designed Track Layout..... and that Hall is a beautiful building space. Is the Hall "Reservation Only", how long can you leave the Layout set-up there?? Cheers to all! -- Ken S.
@SteamInYourGarden3 ай бұрын
Hi @ken.mp372 , our layout is stored in a large trailer and assembled as needed - it is very quick to set-up and take-down but the modules are very well built and a bit heavy (two people needed per module). The hall is owned by the local council and the cost of hiring it for the day is cheap, so that keeps our costs down. We also use it at our various annual large group steam-ups, our next gathering is Southern Highlands Steam-Up 17-19 May in Mittagong NSW, anyone is welcome to register to attend (needed for insurance purposes, see shsteamup.com if you can make it to Mittagong, New South Wales).

Well I built mine on the kitchen table with no fancy tools, no experience, skill or ability (that’s my first one) and painted it with a couple of rattle cans. So you can too! Only advice: ignore the instructions when they say don’t worry about any stiffness in the chassis as it will run in: a little bit of time spent really filing and fettling each moving part will repay you in spades with a smoother running loco.

A nicely done video ride!..... at sedate train speeds with lots of "chuff". A very attractive little railway! Thanks for posting good stuff. -- Question: How was the Driver made to fit so well over the Displacement Lubricator??..... Molded over with "Poly-Clay" or something, then carved into the figure?? Or was the figure selected, then "ground out" & modified to fit?? -- I too have a much modified R-Hs "Katie", my first Lokey, built in 1999..... steamed frequently, but was stored for @ 11 years, pending my job pensioning. Now the Lokey is approaching 100 dutifully "logged" hours of wonderful fun times!! She was always treated kindly, and always steamed very well with never a major problem or concern for 20 years! Then, it was decided to completely transform her into an "Americanized" style of Lokey in 2020. Now it bears scant resemblance to my original "Katie", and much better suits the steaming ops on my small 40 foot indoor "Azure Range Ry", and is known as "UNO"..... still steaming & running as good as ever!! If you wanna take a peek, watch my short YT channel video clip, you may get a kick out of it..... 🤪

Dear @grahamfordham4510, yes Geoff has much to be proud of! The techniques he used for making the buildings have been written-up in the Rails in the Garden magazine, in case you're interested, and they aren't too complicated so he claims they didn't take him that long to make. I hope he will host a steam-up again in the future as the plants will look even better in a few years time.

What means 16mm track? Is it realy 16mm with? It looks like more. Best regards Frank
@SteamInYourGarden7 ай бұрын
@Amselbahner Hi, yes I admit it’s confusing: it’s actually the name of the *scale*, not the gauge: 16 mm on a model represents one foot in real life - a foot is about 305mm so that works out as about 1:19 scale. The mix of imperial and metric measuring systems seems ridiculous but most historic prototypes are pre-metric so their original workshop plans are in feet and inches, but it’s easier to model in millimetres. It’s very close to G scale and an ideal size for live steam or radio-controlled battery conversions of LGB (we’ve abandoned powered track). See <wikipedia.org/wiki/16_mm_scale> or <16mm.org.uk> for more information.
@SteamInYourGarden7 ай бұрын
@Amselbahner As far as gauge is concerned, if you used 16mm *scale* to model standard gauge prototypes then the gauge would be close to Gauge 3 (2 1/2 inch gauge or 64mm), but 16mm scale is usually used in narrow gauge modelling; ideal in the garden as it permits tighter radius curves. As a club we use the commonly available track gauges of either 32mm (Gauge 0) or 45mm (Gauge 1, as also used by LGB to represent metre gauge). It’s a happy coincidence that 32mm gauge track represents 2 foot gauge, which is about right for many narrow gauge lines (“feldbahn” in Deutsch) and 45mm gauge is somewhere between 2 1/2 foot to 3 foot gauge, also common in UK and light industrial railways. This particular line uses 45mm track.
