I know I am seriously late to the party, but I just found you today when this video showed up as a suggestion from KZfaq. The bit about mercury as a "treatment" reminded me of the link between the first Chinese emperor, Chin, who ingested mercury to stave off aging and find immortality. Between your video commentary and the image of the emperor, I found my mind wandering . . . way back to the 1990s and Alan Jackson's song Mercury Blues. Only in my twisted mind, the lyrics were a little off. Instead of "Crazy 'bout a Mercury, Lord, I'm crazy 'bout a Mercury; Gonna buy me a Mercury and cruise it up and down the road", I heard this in my head: "Crazy from the mercury, I'm a lord who's crazy from the mercury. Odd thing is, lobotomies did work in severe cases. Patients with violent outbursts and some other problems would be rendered docile; and the brain reconnected in many child patients. The problem was that doctors started giving out lobotomies like Tylenol. People with no medical license started just driving around offering the procedure in-home. Scary times.

When I had my worst episode of manic depression and nothing helped, the doctor decided I should undergo ECT treatment... For those who doesn't know what it is, it's short for "Electroconvulsive therapy". They pressed a handlebar-shaped thing against my temples on my head and sent an electrical current through my brain, that caused epileptic seizures (after being anesthetisized). I did the treatment twelve times and when I woke up after the last treatment I couldn't stand up and had no idea where I was (even though I had spent my last 3 months hospitalized at the same institution) and was pushed to the emergency x-ray in a wheelchair... I regained my memory and was able to walk again a couple of hours later though, and that made me pretty happy! But was I cured? Kind of... But not thanks to being electricuted. Instead I learned to be grateful for what I have and realized I need to value myself.

I had a book I found at my library when I was younger called 'The Common Medical Practice' book describing how to help with medical issues from the cold to various diseases. One of which it suggested rubbing 2% mercury ointment on the pulled off sores of impetigo.

I know someone who had a doctor drop something with Mercery in it into her eye to "Try to fix it" after she had some problems with it. Its over 30 years later and that eye is still deformed and she still have sever problems with her stomech.

From what I hear, trepanning was sometimes used to treat concussions, on the belief that the hole in the skull would allow pressure caused by swelling of the brain to be released. Not sure if that's totally legit, but it does sound more plausible than "it's to let the evil spirits out".
