I must thank you for making this video and sharing it with the KZfaq community! I've just followed it to successfully replace my faulty keyboard. It took several hours (the 71 screws securing the keyboard were a chore) but I got there in the end. I especially like the presentation of your video in that unlike others it walks you through the process of reassembly once the keyboard is changed. Thank you! Liked and subscribed.

I've just ordered the replacement A12%6 keyboard. As you can see I can't use the number 'eight' key which is driving me mad!!! Wish me GR& luck! I'll let you know how I get on, as you make it look so easy, thank you. Update: Thought I would let you know that the replacement came and I swapped out the old damaged keyboard and replaced it. Now my MacBook Pro is working 100% again and I can type the number 8888888888 perfectly! Thank you so much for this tutorial I couldn't have done i without you! I did have a little trouble getting a couple of the 51 tiny screws out as they had become corroded and the philips screwdriver just created a countersink hole in one. When putting it back together I managed to lose that screw somewhere... I vacuumed out the inside but never found it! The other issue was that I didn't locate the ribbon cable properly first time, and half the keys worked. I had another go and got it right. As you can see all the keys are working perfectly now. So thank you again for uploading this video it was really helpful and inspirational too.

Thank you. Very clear instructions. Unfortunately, way past my comfort level. I've replaced HDDs and batteries before, but this would be too much for me. I'll see what the repair shop will charge. Otherwise, it's external keyboard from here on out.

I followed everything on the video to get to the faulty keyboard, but my impatience got the better of me. Of the 71 screwes, one of the corner screws decided not to come off the keyboard. I ripped the keyboard of out of frustration. Now the screw is stuck. I don't know if I will ever be able to get it off. Can I simply file it and make the top smooth? Will it create any issues?

I had heard there were 51 screws securing the keyboard on several videos, but my keyboard had 72 screws! If you stop the video and look at the keyboard you can count the 38 perimeter screws, just add the # of screws from a couple of rows (there are 5 'internal' rows), and you are already at 51 or 52. Good video, though there are times when forearms and hands got in the way of camera, making removal and install of connectors and screws a little tough to view.

I'm having trouble removing the wifi antenna phillips head screw (the short one). The same Phillips I used to get the left one out works fine with other screws but seems to be stripping this one. Any tips on getting this screw out?

i had trouble with the same screw. It felt like it was fastened by the hand of god. Anyway i took out the 4 cables that are nested in the antenna bracket, then lifted out the part of the bracket that was loose and started rotating it on top of the DVD drive. since it's plastic it didnt break from a bit of bending, and it was enough to get the screw to turn just enough so that the screwdriver could loosen it the rest of the way.

I think you did a great job on the hideous engineering of Apple, I double checked and you don't mention UNPLUGGING the back light cable just before removing the mainboard.

I successfully replaced the keyboard like this but i wouldn't really recommend it to anyone for such an old machine, it's a pain in the ass getting the 51 tiny screws out, especially when some of them happen to be over-tightened right out of factory. I was worried i would have to drill some of them to get them out.

Lets say you need to only replace the backlight. Do you need to remove the keyboard power button? I'm thinking you dont.

You can play around with reseating the keyboard ribbon connector but the connector will not make some keys not work, it's more of a "works completely" or "completely doesn't work" kind of deal. If you have some keys not working that means the replacement keyboard is bad or has a bad rail and needs to be replaced.

@@GRIBSOFT Hi thank you for responding! I did try to reseat the ribbon and now the keyboard failed completely. I did not get a replacement keyboard I was replacing the speakers which required me to take out the logic board. Anyhow, I'm using an external keyboard now. I wonder if I can just replace the entire logic board? If so, do you know if I can upgrade my logic board from the 2.4 GHz one to the 2.66 GHz one (offered by Apple in the same model year)? Would there be any connections that are different?
