Flames levels house in Butler Township outside Lavelle, Schuylkill County Shortly before 630 am District 4 and surrounding districts were dispatched for a reported working fire in the area of 30 High road, Butler Township. While units were starting to respond a second alarm was immediately called due to a smoke column being visible from local fire stations in town and as far away as just outside Mount Carmel. Lavelle Captain Jeremy Smallwood stated that as first in units arrived they had to cut open the chain lock on the gate to get access down the dirt and gravel road to the residence. When they made it down the long driveway they found heavy fire showing, especially in the charlie/delta side of the house. Shortly after units began arriving on scene a 3rd alarm was struck to bring additional manpower and tankers unit a water source could be established. Within thirty minutes the bulk of the fire that remained was knocked down and firefighters began to extinguish what remained of hot-spots in what was left of the building. As of now no cause has been determined but a State Police Fire Marshal was called to the scene.

As a former volunteer firefighter I'm one of those that criticize the FF's that take their sweet time BUT the thousands of rounds of ammo cooking off, I think I might sit back (a good ways) and wait for that house to burn to the foundation before I would do anything.

I'm in Washington County Maryland, I think I heard this call. We transferred some Tankers up that way. Glad no one was hit by that ammo cook off! You guys did a good job once you got water, I know how it is to have no water. I was a Volunteer for 30 years. God Bless..

Seems to me that if a house is so far gone that nothing can be done to save any of it, it's best to just let it do a controlled burn.

Ah such a joy to see all the advice from the experts who have never fought a fire and dont seem to comprehend how difficult it can be in a rural area to fight a well involved structure fire complete with a locked gate water issues and exploding ammunition, not to mention it takes time for volunteers to be called to the fire scene and that they often dont have all the extensive equipment or training as paid departments. Yet they are out at these fires risking their very lives to save people's homes and lives to the very best of their ability and are being criticized for their efforts. Some folks just dont know when to shut their mouths.

Good video. Hard to fight this fire when the driveway gate is locked, there is no water available for the volunteer firefighters to use, and enough ammo to win a small war was popping off.It was hard to watch the water being flowed on the D/4 side go right through the structure. Would have been nice if the FF manning the master stream got feedback from the other FF's that the precious water in the master stream was watering the trees on the A side. I think volunteer firefighters are brave for doing a job others don't want to, to keep their rural communities safer.

Reminds me of how difficult it can be to establish a water source in rural areas. Not to mention getting at homes that are some distance from public roads. Fire service did the best they could, given the circumstances.

For those of us who are volunteer it is hard, the biggest is finding a water source to fill up tankers for water runs to fill up the portable tanks we use. Depending on the fire we use 1 maybe 2 of them and even though they hold a lot of water it will not last long when you have a pumper sucking it out for hand lines.

In our area, some places are 45 minutes away from a water source. Multiple 2800 gal tankers and a 1.5 hr round trip..most places are gone. Mobile homes mainly and they’re fully involved in ten minutes, takes us 45 minutes just to get there.

I take it you know nothing about fighting fires in rural area? This is a common occurrence for a house fire out in the countryside where it may take a fire department 20 minutes or longer just to respond. Many of these fires are reported when the house is already under heavy fire and so when the fire department gets there, they are most often fully involved, also many of these homes are in areas where this is no water available so water has to be tankered in. Go watch a rural department in action before criticizing what you do not know.

@@SASD209 Poor performance? The house was fully involved when they arrived not too mention that a few thousand rounds of ammo were going off. You said you are a retired FF then you should know first hand how hard it can be for rural departments that are staffed with volunteers, a lot of which don't have funding available for the latest greatest training available or equipment. So knowing that you of all people shouldn't be criticizing these people with stupid comments like that.
