Instead of buy an expensive oil catch can, you can make a $29 one work just like the more expensive versions. Understand how they work and if you don't know the value of one, run one for a month. See the gunk it is PREVENTING from going into your carb and manifold ...Especially important on direct injection motors

Awesome idea to use the screen and the steel wool. I have two coming tomorrow and I’ll definitely be using this method

I suggest to use brass wool, the vapours from the engine are in part water, it will over time corrode the steel wool, ruining the baffle

Are those baffles allowing the clean are to come out or blocking the bad oil to come threw

I used part of a sponge type small engine air filter material and I think the in and out ports are labelled backwards. I want the oil and dirt in the can not gumming up the upper side of the so called in port.

Thanks for the advice and I am doing the same. As I was inserting the mesha screen into the baffle, I found some oil residue in the baffle and wondering whether the oil residue will clog up the mesh. I will periodically check but wanted to see you experience as well. Thanks!

Hello, glad you liked it. Depending on how much oil bypass you have, yes, it will eventually clog. You should really check every month or so to make sure you are not filling up the catch can. It really varies. On mine, I could could months and months. My son has an Audi that was filling the vatch can monthly. Good luck !

@@arcorob Had a '04 A6 (2.7T S Line) which was an oil guzzler hence 7+ quarts for each oil change 🙂 I did have some oil / water at the bottom but looks like I can last the entire OCI (usually around 6 months) - will check monthly though especially during cold spell.

When the oil collects on the screen, Wouldn't it restrict the air?
@arcorob

You would have to have a HUGE amount of oil to block the flow. Remember, this is oil vapor. As it goes from vapor to liquid, gravity pulls it down into the can. Just keep it clean but better than pushing it BACK into the intake to be burning in the combustion chambers (just picture over time how much is going to just settle as gunk in your intake.

So basically hot oily mist comes to IN, hits the scrub steel wire, vapor turns to oil, drips down to the bottom of the can and regular air comes out the OUT?
@arcorob
@arcorob Жыл бұрын
Yes. Instead of colgging your intake over time. If it was palatable and legal, you would have a hose that just dumps it but car makers had to find a way to not have dripping cars. So, dump it in the intake..LOL. There are alot of videos on catch cans. I have seen some cars first hand that you empty every six months. My sons Audi A4? has to dump monthly

@@darkomtc I don´r believe on it. It does save your engine. Alternative? Just throw the oil on the street so your engine don´t be feed with burned oil..... No way to do this..sorry...

@@ariostomartireYeah, I agree. There is nothing “scam” about stopping oil valors and moisture from being puked on top of your valves where it bakes into a crusty abrasive mess.

Why even bother with a catch can on a gasoline car?
@arcorob
@arcorob 12 күн бұрын
well. it would not make sense on an electric car now would it ? The idea is to not pass the oil vapor back into the intake to be burned up as carbon

Would hate to see the screen clog up and fail to allow vapors to pass through. But not something I would ever do , so if it causes a problem it won't be on my vehicle.
