Are period pains normal? What could be the various reasons behind painful periods? Many of us meet doctors for our period pain, but are often dismissed with "it's normal" or that "it's in your head" - so as someone who has endometriosis and other medical conditions, I thought to help break this horrible myth and empower us with some information that may help us by talking about 8 reasons why periods could be painful.

I'm sure too. Many times women's pains are not taken seriously because they're seen to be too emotional or believed to have a lower pain threshold. It's a struggle to be believed and that's why it takes an average of 7.5 years to be diagnosed with conditions like endometriosis.

Hi Diana... That's really sad and tough - I so hope there are some ways you do get relief? I was working on an upcoming video on quality of life with chronic illness and how bad it can be that we all feel how you do - and it's sad how that is. When I am at that level of pain and feel like that, I remind myself of how I've gotten through it before and I will get through it now as well and I keep working on what I need to to improve my quality of life. Hopefully the video I have planned works out so that I can really explain what I mean. I guess what I'm trying to say Diana... there are many who know what you're going through and I hope you know know we're all your virtual form of strength. Also, if you do feel really low, please please see if you can get the help of a family, friend or a qualified counsellor. Big hug.

My cramps, I can feel it like two days before my period will come. They aren’t bad but I feel it slightly. My first day of my period, is when it’s bad. Some months I can bear it but sometimes there’s are months when I have to take Advil. But then the second day it’s not bad and then it disappears. My period has also shortened as I aged, i’m in my late 20’s. Two very heavy days, third day light, then disappears to spotting for another few days.

I think as our hormones change, how our lifestyle is in terms of eating and exercising plus how we feel mentally, over time for some people, periods tend to adjust or shall I say 'evolve'. At least that's how it's been with me as well. My periods have changed based on a lot of things. As long as they become easier :)

@@milica6725 in terms of cramping, i’m not worried. I’m like dying then I get them. If they are bad, I take Advil. Which is not every month. In terms of period flow and length, as we age, are hormones fluctuate. I’ve researched into this, and taking enough vitamin D and vitamin B6 should help out. I’ve started doing yoga practices for period and exercising. After this doing. I did notice a change in terms of the flow of my period & how much I shed. @@milica6725 it is normal because our uterus contracts to shed blood. But if it’s unbearable, then you should see the doctor. Mine are bearable, sometimes if i’m working and it’s a bit more that month, then I take Advil. It’s not like I have to stay home and have heat pads etc... I still walk around and go about my day on my period. My friend had very bad periods, to the point where she would have to skip work or school. She only would stay home with a heat pad because it was so bad. Her flow was very heavy too. Her doctor gave her birth control pills which helped her. Best bet is to go to the doctor 😃

I hope you can see a specialist who tells you it isn't normal and tells you exactly why it's happening. From what I have been told, weight does play a role in making periods more difficult, but there has to be a reason for the pain - and I doubt weight gain would be the only reason for it. But please seek the help of a specialist. Good luck with this.

My period pain last upto 4-5 hours during first day of my periods is it normal?
@FootprintsNoBoundariesByShruti
@FootprintsNoBoundariesByShruti 3 жыл бұрын
I think the best person to answer that would be a doctor, because it really depends on the type of pain and even any other symptoms you may have to really understand what is and isn't normal. There are women out there who have no pain from endometriosis but go through other symptoms that cause a lot of other issues. So it varies.

My mum had endometriosis as well and I really think your doctors may understand you better if they look at your mum and the rest of your family's medical history. I've done quite a lot of videos on endometriosis so I'd suggest to go through them as well, but most importantly, you should see an endometriosis specialist and get to know if it's endometriosis that is troubling you. I also had my periods begin at age 11 and an early diagnosis helped me mentally as well. Good luck :)

Hi Deepika, I think when we're out and about like that, we're more active - we're getting some exercise in, plus we may be emotionally happier in that social environment - I think those two factors could be playing a role. But I could be wrong - I obviously do not know your entire story and neither am I a doctor, but maybe seek the right exercise help for your periods, things that you can do at home. Good luck.

Some months my periods are really heavy and painful. Plus I get feelings of depression and anxiety. However some months my periods aren’t that bad. So, I’m thinking that life style has a massive effect on your menstrual cycle. Especially stress. Is there any chance that it could just be genetic and not caused by any disease? Some women suffer badly with they get the menopause while other women don’t. Menopause is not seen as a disease it’s just a natural change in the body even though some women suffer with the symptoms
@FootprintsNoBoundariesByShruti
@FootprintsNoBoundariesByShruti 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Sara, You've mentioned quite a few things here so I'll do my best to share what I know, understand and have experienced. Your lifestyle plays a huge role on your menstrual cycle and in fact how your mind and body feels in general. What you eat, your activities, what you let your mind consume - the content you see - it all has its way of playing a role with your body's health. And yes, many conditions are genetic and not either. In my understanding - endometriosis is genetic and it can also happen to those with no genetic predisposition. And yes, menopause is a natural change in the body, but how easy you get through it is the main thing as it can give you symptoms which make it feel like a disease. Again, lifestyle, genetics and many other factors play their part.

@@FootprintsNoBoundariesByShruti Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. Luckily, I don’t have endometriosis and doctors can’t find anything else that could be causing all the negative symptoms. So, for me it’s probably genetic and my lifestyle. How we think etc. My periods are always regular and it’s been that way since I was 13 -some months are awful, some months I’m ok. Thanks again for your help 😊

Hi Riley, my periods began when I was 11 - everyone's cycle seems to vary that way. Hello @Daniel . Any "horrible cramp" is never "normal", but unfortunately a lot of girls suffer with menstruation. Medical examination and ultrasound (without being afraid!) are surely useful to study and understand the cause of your discomfort. I'm a nurse, since a lot of years I've been studying the strong period pain and some methods to "prevent" it, instead of only "fighting" cramps every time, or suffer unnecessarily: a lot can be done to avoid your unuseful suffering. We can speak again, if you need, glad to be able to help you to get out of your discomfort.

Hi Daniel, I can understand that period pain and there being a possible medical issue behind it can be scary, but once you know what it is, personally for me, it was a relief. It meant I could work with my doctor, nutritionist and physiotherapist on a plan to help me. So I'd really encourage you to find out what it is, because it could be something treatable and you may be living with so much pain for no reason. Please seek a specialist doctor. I have really bad cramps with large clots on day 4 of my cycle. I went to the doctors, they did an ultrasound, and said it might be a cyst. Idk what it is but it hurts so bad I consider getting my uterus removed.

Hi Todnise, it's so sad to hear that you're going through so much pain. None of us deserve to suffer like this. I hope a well trained specialist gynaecologist who understands cysts will be able to help you out and possibly just get the cyst removed - but obviously that's for you and the doctor to figure out but I will strain on the fact that you should see a specialist. In my experience, I've come across many gynacs who almost only specialise in fertility rather than having a specialised interest in cysts, endometriosis, adenomyosis and other conditions. I hope you get the treatment you need and feel better very soon. Take care and good luck.

The most important thing is to show a gynaecologist. Let them assess you and help figure out a treatment plan for you, whether that includes seeing a specialist, a nutritionist (who should give you an anti-inflammatory diet) and a pelvic floor therapy specialist. I'm sure you will be able to figure out a formula to help reduce your issues once you get the right guidance and even know what's causing all these issues. Good luck.

@@karenpearce7658 It's so sad that you're having to go through this. With my PCOS, I have worked on my diet, my exercise, looking to calm my mind because the imbalanced hormones were aggravating my PCOS and my anger. I also have endometriosis and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome so I was kind of pushed in a corner to have to make these changes in my life. So for me these things have helped. And Karen, we're all different with how our body is and how it reacts to various things. If you wish to know the diet I follow and speak to a specialist dietician about it - because in my experience only a dietician can help you with a meal plan that works for PCOS - here's a video link to my diet: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h9d4e7yG3tTLnqc.html Also my physiotherapist has created the right exercise program that keeps in mind my disabilities but also makes sure that I am not gaining weight because weight gain can really mess up PCOS more. I also have a video on endometriosis vs PCOS - I have no idea if that will help you but I am linking it any way: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aslhedSrmLWReKM.html - just in case you do wish to watch and have missed it. At the end of the day, whenever I have met doctors who do not understand me and are not being helpful then I look for another doctor, because my doctor needs to be on my side. And I need to do everything possible to help myself. I hope this helps and I hope you get a team of the right medical professionals.
