The Remington M24 SWS came into U.S. Army service in 1988 and has served with sniper teams around the world since then. While the system was clearly meant to chamber a larger caliber .300 Win Mag cartridge for an extended range, the Army had the M24 chambered in 7.62x51 NATO for logistical reason, but still allowing the rifle to easily clear an 800m first-round impact range and ample recorded shot past 1000m.
The M24 SWS has since been touted as a symbol of the U.S. Army sniper, and the sniper qualification course. Although the rifle is being phased out for the XM2010 and Mk22 SWS, Army snipers still speak of the M24 SWS with great fondness.
In this episode, we shoot the M24 SWS and discuss with our guest, Rob (‪@VintageRiflesShootersClub‬ ) about the intricacies of the M24 SWS, and his time working with the M24 as a U.S. Army sniper.

I know right! With how fast the bullets are I almost thought it was impossible yo see them on camera. I even saw the bullet fly at the 300m and 400m targets. That was gnarly.

Vapor trails can even be seen at short distances with small calibers. My .22WMR is very fun to shoot for that reason, I can start to see them at 200m

That would be a big factor in a lot of US Weapons I find. We tend to run the guns to death, especially in training, and the armorers are only Human. It is not so problematic for the M4s to double their factory MOA due to slop, since that still puts them on a man-sized target to about 300 yards. Can't quite get away with that with the sniper rifles where adding even a half-MOA adds up to problems.

Excellent example of why the spotter is so important. A spotting scope focused to see mirage will give infinitely better wind reads than trying to call wind through the rifle scope. Great shooting!

@@northpointaxe6167 Absolutely. I don’t have the experience you have (I’m just a target competition guy), but in my experience, working as the spotter has also made me a much better shooter as well. Like you said, as the spotter you have much better and more detailed information of the changing environment, but also having that “5,000 ft view” really helped me learn to think 3-dimensionally versus being in the rifle scope and only thinking about the mechanics of the position and fussing the shot itself.

What is mirage?

@@pamn9051 Mirage is when the barrel gets hot and the vision through the scope gets fucked up/distorted. Also counts when the enviorment is hot, at long range the hotness of the air will distort the image, thus making shooting harder, since what you are seeing isnt clean. Mirage is also the wind moving left to right affecting your points of impact on longer ranges more because the bullets loose power. What seems like weak wind on longer range it still affects the trajectory of the bullet.

Brings back a memory...my plt sgt had been trying to find me a DM rifle or anything bigger than an m4. Best they could do was a SAW (gee, thanks) with the new squad day optic. We ended up getting an Army EOD team attached to us when we got in country, and he announced, "hey I got you a sniper rifle, the army guys have one they don't know how to use so they said you can have it". I got handed an M24, a can of ammo, and a couple write in the rain pages with notes from the last Marine it had been loaned to. I got to take 9 shots at 100 yards and off we went. I only got to fire one round after that, to my disappointment, before our army guys had to leave. They were replaced by an air force team who were not nearly as much fun, nor were they as open-handed with their gear, and my excitement about the possibility of getting to bean someone with a half-inch explosive round out of their m107 was quickly turned into bitter disappointment and months of "you know, I could shoot that guy if I had a big boy rifle" over the radio every time we spotted someone burying an IED 14-1500 meters ahead of us. I put a similar rifle together, but with a trijicon accupoint and heavier barrel...I think I'll take it out this week, you've inspired me.

@@NotYourFriendPal it's basically just an upgraded Remington 700. Get a Bergara B14 (basically a higher quality R700 clone) and add an optic and you're done. If you want something clone correct you need a barreled action and a H-S or McMillan stock

You can get R700 actions and stick them into your preferred stock easily. Building a clone rifle would be expensive but it's really just for collecting.

Get a rem 700....put a bartlien barrel with 5R rifling, a M24 barrel contour and get the action trued. You'll basically have a M24

How about a sharps 45-110 black powder cartridge 540gr. Paper patched bullet. I have a 45-120 shooting a 610gr round nose lubed with spg. Fun shooting offhand or sticks, not so much from a bench. 🥺🤕🤯

I got an M24 pseudo-clone chambered in .308 on commission from a former U.S. Army sniper who did tours in Afghanistan. It was a custom build he had done when he left service. First time I took that thing out, it was printing 1/3 MOA groups. Even with slightly less optimal ammo it still readily does 1/2 - 3/4 MOA and that's as much on me being rusty now. The platform is ridiculously accurate and a pleasure to shoot. This run shows just how important wind-reading skills and a good team is to effective long-range shooting. I believe that most folks can learn to shoot well (think sub-MOA with a capable platform), but the differentiator is going to be in all of the other parts. Also, this episode highlights why hunters should not take long-range shots. You might be the best from a technical perspective, but a tiny misread in environmentals and you've pooched the shot and wounded the animal instead of killing it.

That reminds me of "Jimmy John" while taking a shot at a VERY long distance while filling his Arizona Governor's Elk Tag. Too bad that he more or less bought out another hunter with bribes so that he would most likely be the only person hunting that Bull Elk, it was not a 1st shot clean hit, without a follow-up because they were afraid that he may possibly damage the antlers. And to The 9 hole team keep up the awesome work men and my 5.56 and several of my friends all have some components from Black slate on their Rifles.

This is to correct my previous comments. The barrels were developed with the assistance of renowned barrel maker Boots Obermeyer. The rifling was 1-11.25 5R. The R indicated radius’ed rifling. Both on the leading and trailing edges. It produces less copper fouling and lower pressures. Mike Rock produced the first 187 barrels and was involved with helping Remington get their cold hammer forging process up and running according to what I read. The Remington barrels were supposedly 20% more accurate than Rocks. The radius’ed rifling may have been adapted from the rifling in the AK-74. But the R designation assigned to the barrel did not stand for Russian. No disrespect intended towards Rob Ski.

My precision gun is 308, about the same barrel length and similar profile. 308 is a GREAT round out to 600-700 but the further you go past that, tje better you must be at reading wind. It's not a smoking fast round, its not a super high BC projectile. Its just an "average" rifle caetridge. That being said, if you are using the right ammo (175smk or better) and can read wind it van be VERY proficient, especially at average engagement differences. I also think it's the best to learn on 308. You'll get better at wind and ranging.

yeah i also think that logistics is something overlooked by civilian shooters. The prospect that you can de-link MG ammo to use in a pinch and still maintain the 800m radius is a very appealing one when you're a sniper stuck on a FOB with spotty supply (which yes, typically US forces have great supply).

I agree with everything except for starting out with 308. I would recommend starting with 22LR to get the basics in, for money reasons. Match 308 was expensive pre-covid; it's ludicrous now.

Totally agree. I love .308 and yes, out to around 700 they are awesome but it can definitely get sporty after that especially with a M1A. I started shooting PRS last year and all I had was a M1A. As if PRS isn't challenging enough (and our match director is a former sniper so it can get extremely difficult at times) throw in new shooter and .308 out of a M1A. lol I learned a lot though. End of the season I finally got my 6mm ARC together and holy cow what a difference. Night and day.

Josh prob sees ot better than we do. Mrgunsandgear explained once that every time you show a vid then someone takes that copy to make another vid, deterioration in quality gets diminished. So by the time we see it, its already twice as bad as Josh. None the less, Josh did a great job!!! 😀👍

The reason for the mirage effect is the sun on a cold morning (it looks like) creates ablation, so you're effectively looking through a thin fog that's shimmering from sunlight at an angle through the humidity.

Great video. I loved watching the very visible trace on many of the shots taken, atmospherics were just right for it. I have 6mm and 6.5 Creedmoor rifles that are lasers and make long distance shooting an easier endeavor. That being said, I have a Remington 700, chambered in .308 Win., 20” heavy barrel, 1-12 twist that shoots 168gr. and 175gr. SMK sub MOA all day long. I love that .308 and will never sell it.

The M24 is a pretty good system with major problems. The safety required a hair tie and sometimes rounds could dive while feeding due to the long action as Ski said. Knew I was in love when I went 10/10 on a 10 inch plate at 510m on Burroughs Range. One little cluster of impacts.

If you got perfect wind calls with all of the evaluations then they all would be better and not the fault of the rifle. Wind is part of ballistics and the only way around it is a combo of a higher BC and higher velocity.

It's interesting the development the army took with their semi autos, whereas the USMC went with the short action M40 and stayed with it only for the Army to go back to something similar later on.

@@smithnwesson990 that's how they're doing it I think. The CSASS is in 7.62 for 800m or so and in, and the Mk22 is in .300 Norma for further

The M24 is definitely a more than adequate rifle for anything inside 800 yards tbh. I know civilians who think they need $5000 target rifles for hunting and I think it's just asinine.

In South Africa in the seventies when Sniping was being explored they used a single shot target rifle called a Musgrave RSA which was locally designed and produced for Bisley shooting and gained quite a reputation. It was heavy barreled half minute of angle capability. They lightened the stock, fitted a Scope and Voila. Of course the bush war soon necessitated a change to captured Russian Dragunovs not because of better accuracy but rather its multi shot capability ,and the fact that it used the enemy's ammunition so no tell tale 308 cases were laying around. I have one of those early model rifles and it is undoubtedly one of the most accurate 308's around ,even today. Highly sought after here because of its unbreakable action...

They're going to run out of range... The British snipers routinely shoot Lapua Magnum to 1500-1800 meters.... I think this range stops at 1200 :P

Hmm. Does that optic have the bdc turret? If so I wonder how ammunition from the Era of the m24 differs from current 118lr. The 800 meter target was a bit weird. Plus mornings are very strange for wind. Looks as if the ground is still icy. Wonder if it made it difficult for the wind calls since a slight breeze pushes that round off target by a football field haha!. Great shooting and great looking gun.

No. I believe that scope has a mil reticle, and does not have BDC markings.

My mentor for learning high power was my spotter. My Dad taught me the fine practice of accuracy, the squeeze, the calm discipline of body mechanics. The skill displayed in this video is deserved for this rifle.

one of my dream rifles for a long time now, Remington 700 in .308 with a good stock and some good glass...... a beautiful piece of machinery, and a bolt rifle that's still popular in other calibers as well!!!! just awesome 👌
