Watching these interviews, I've realised Mark Hamill is more Luke Skywalker than Luke Skywalker is now.

Imagine if Mark was allowed to Play Luke but with a touch of Yoda. That playful mischievous side testing Rey’s patience and showing how much Luke grew as a character. It makes me cry to think about how great that could’ve been.

I find the greatest sin of Disney’s handling of Star Wars is the fact that we will never see the original cast all together again. Rian had an opportunity to do something with the original cast, and he squandered it.

Mark Hamill is genius. He shows his disagreement in such subtle, sarcastic, humorous ways. Thank God for his subversion to Rian Johnson.

Luke finding out about Han's death OFFSCREEN is outrageous, it's unfair. How could you kill off one of the main characters and not have the reactions onscreen.

I feel so bad for Mark Hamill. He hated what was done to Luke, but still maintained a level of professionalism and did his job as an actor. It's so interesting to see that Luke's portrayal in TLJ was one of the most negative reactions, but I have never seen anyone actually blaming Hamill for it.

I can actually Picture Rian Johnson writing the Screenplay, Childishly giggling at his own Jokes and thinking he's a genius.

Luke Skywalker wouldn't say "the Jedi need to end". Luke Skywalker would say "I'll turn the Jedi into what they always had the potential to be".

The movie was certainly terrible but did only one good thing to me. It made me find this channel.

Mark is an absolute treasure... I really feel for him in those interviews. He deserved so much better.

- Leia gets sucked out into the vacum of space. There's no suction whatsoever when they open the door to bring her in. - BB8 can't fix a motherboard with his skills but ramming his head into it fixes it. - Rogue One shows Y-Wing bombers knock the power out of a star destroyer in seconds. 30+ years later bombers attack a star destoyer slowly and are easily destroyed. - Luke wants nothing to do with the Jedi anymore so he moves into and lives at a Jedi temple and wears a Jedi robe. - Luke doesn't want anyone to find him, so he leaves part of a map to find him stored in R2. - Luke astral projects himself so he can't be harmed. He dies after astral projecting himself. - Rey thought the force was a fairy tale, but then 3 days later can use it to beat Kylo and Luke who trained in the force there entire lives. - Poe risked his life big time and destroyed Star Killer base for The Resistence saving billions of lives. Took out the the big canons of the dreadnaught saving the resistence ships from certain annihilation. The Resistence doesn't trust him, slapping him, calling him an out of control fly boy, shooting him with a stun gun, putting him in jail, won't give him life saving information. Luke got a medal for destroying the death star. Poe got thrown under the bus for destroying Star Killer base. - Yoda who has dedicated his life to teaching the Jedi texts to people, finds the Jedi text to be boring. "Page turners they are not." - Ghost Yoda can shoot lighting. He never shows up to a fight to help. - The guy who offers to be the code breaker is staying in jail even though he can leave at any moment. There's no reason for him to stay in jail. - Finn needs a pilot to fly him off the star destoyer. Fly's a ship to Canto Bight. Fly's a ship to take on the walkers. While in a coma Finn learned how to fly spaceships apparently. - Time needs to be spent on Rey training character development. Movie spends a bunch of time at a casino. - Rose wants to get in and out quickly on the Canto Bight mission. Wears a greasy mechanic outfit in the casino. Lands ship in the middle of beach, in front of casino. - Hux is commander over the fleet. Doesn't command to do even the most basic military tactics. (in ESB two star destroyers intercepted the Falcon when it was being chased) - The starships are fusion powered and fuel would last for years. Ships run on gas and will be out in a few hours, Rose says "the fleet is running on fumes". - They say "may the force be with you" in Star Wars. Holdo says "godspeed rebels". (uhm, aren't they the resistence?) - Finn is going to crash a ship into the giant laser to save what he loves. Rose crashes into him and stops him so she can tell him he needs to save what he loves.

It's horrible how Mark Hamill looks in some of those interviews, sometimes he looks seconds away from just breaking down and crying

57:20 Fun Fact: Carrie Fisher was a script doctor for many years before her death. So maybe Disney should have asked and payed a key woman in Star Wars history who also had experience when it comes to supervising writing.

Even a few years later, it hurts watching Hamill give some of those interviews.

The look on Hamill's face during those interviews is heartbreaking.

The way Mark Hamill was treated by these films is a travesty and insulting.

That interview with Mark Hamill and Simon Pegg is heartbreaking, but after that moment of heartbreak you see Mark (the Luke we should've got) come bursting to the surface with an enthusiasm he'd forgotten about for a character that did inspire countless youths. No matter what they tried to do in TLJ or the sequel trilogy as a whole Luke will always be the hero of Star Wars.

It's clear that Rian is too unconfident/inept to deal with writing serious scenes with moments of emotional lows, so he uses awkward humour as his scapegoat. It's like the script needs a therapist.

I’m not even a Star Wars fan but seeing Luke Skywalker after 30 years! Wow! How amazing! How cool is that?!? The Luke Skywalker is back! And…..he throws the lightsaber for a laugh, Never sees or interacts with his sister or Han, finds out Han dies- scene cut/no reaction, find out he tries to kill Kylo because he had a bad dream, etc.

One thing that pisses me off is when people try to fabricate reasons and arguments for what happens in bad films. The FILM SHOULD GIVE YOU ALL THE INFO. During the bomber scene in the theaters my 12 year old son leaned over and asked “ where are the Y-Wings?”. To which I replied “I have no idea.” He shook his head and whispered “This is stupid “. I bring this up because most people claim I disliked this movie because either I grew up with the original series or I’m sexist. His age and the fact he has the same problems as you do kills the first reason and the fact Mon Mothma and Leia were Rebel leaders kills the second.

Listening to Mark talk about how important it was for Luke and Leia to experience of be in proximity to Han’s death was actually kind of eye-opening. Mark fully understands in what ways writing works and doesn’t. He would have done better writing this movie than Rian.

My wife asked me why the hell I keep watching TLJ reviews. A 42 year old man should and does have better things to do with his time. However Star Wars was amazing as a kid. Luke Skywalker was my hero. When I left the Theatre after this new movie I felt meh. The resistance and crappy politics bothered me most. Only after a few days did it occur to me that the real reason for my dislike of this film was the way Luke was portrayed. Seeing those interviews with Mark Hamill is truly depressing. Rian Johnson and Disney fucked up what should have been a sure fire hit by undoing the intrigue of TFA and breaking my childhood Hero Luke Skywalker. Fuck you Rian Johnson. Great vid Mauler

90-95% of the Resistance died because Rose wanted to stick it to the fat cats on the casino planet by parking on a beach (Fin is cowardly at that point, he'd follow protocol). I didn't even catch that at the first viewing. Hell, just parking on a beach is a dick move.

It baffles me that people saw this series and concluded Mauler was a "crying man-baby" and used the series as an example of the "toxic, unfair hate" towards this movie - I've hardly seen a better example of a video with such thorough and fair argumentation. Although I guess, despite sitting through 2 hours of TLJ, they didn't bother to even sit through one full video of this, so I can't blame them for getting the entire content wrong. And this is as good a place as any to point out that a group of people desperately clinging onto anything to try and argue that the sequels were good are calling fans of the OT (and prequels) that hate episodes 7-9 immature and part of "group-think" (yes, an actual comment accused people making actual arguments against TLJ of "group-think"). I guess that's just the internet...

As sad as it truly is, it really did just make me smile watching Mark slowly turn around during the interview you showcased. His turn and stare at Simon, mouth agape for only a few seconds before directing his eyes elsewhere, but you can tell that Simon has hooked him back. And for that moment, that one beautiful, blissful moment, that man was able to continue living his dream of inspiring and spreading happiness to people around the globe, the absolute joy and wonder he inspired in so many people. While the movies were so bad, this moment still returns to me as something happy, if only fleeting

Worst part of Poe being trashed for the bombers is that it was implied that it was Leia's plan that he followed in the first place. So he is trashed for following the plan that was decided upon. The bombers make no sense because of their speed is so slow either they have stealth tech or just magically appear in place. There was no way the bombers would have made it back to the fleet before the Dreadnaught could have fired.

Here's a point against the people who say that it makes sense for Luke to be who he is in TLJ. When they say "Well it makes sense because he was traumatized." Sure, it is traumatizing to lose one of your family to the dark side and see all that you built brought to ruin by said family member. Do you know what else is traumatizing? Learning that one of the most evil men in the galaxy, a murderer, a man that played perhaps the most significant role in the destruction of the Jedi Order and the establishment of the Galactic Empire, is your father. Luke learned that from the man himself. It was a truth that should've broken him and do you know what Luke did? He had a long, hard think about it. He may have struggled with dark thoughts or impulses, doubts about himself or his future, or of the goodness inherent within him. But Luke Skywalker, our hero, picked himself up and decided, "No, that is not my fate or my father's fate. I will save him or die trying." That is Luke Skywalker. That is the greatest Jedi who ever lived.

It's somewhat endearing to hear that it isn't only us fans who get upset over the blatant character assassination of our beloved heroes. Mark and other actors (GoT) who have the courage to state their true feelings garner my admiration and sympathy

The Year is 2050. Go to movies, it's the weekly MCU movie. Disney logo on screen. It's phase 12 of the story. Movie starts, Tobey Maguire is in a wheelchair. A burglar comes into his house, steals his Funko Pops. Tobey says "it's peterin time" (this is a reference to the hit 2022 film morbius). Also says "that sounded better in my head." He puts on his mask, the crowd screams until my ears ring. He swings at the man as he's running away. A portal opens and captain Europe steps into the scene. Tobey accidentally swings into him He says "it's all good I have healthcare". Crowd cheers, captain Europe had his own TV show in 2048 and this is a reference to his prostate exam episode in season 6 where he makes the same joke. Tom Holland and Andrew Garfield come through the portal and point at each other, making the funny Spider-Man meme again. They all start jerking each other off as the camera zooms out, revealing the Death Star and the Star Wars theme briefly plays. Crowd cheers again before the screen cuts to black and Darth Vader's laugh plays. Post credit scene shows Thanos reappear, and he says, "I'm coming for you Redditors." Crowd cheers one last time, before news sources are saying this is one of the best movies of all time. Thank you Disney for saving the film industry.

As far as I’ve seen , mark hamill is the only actor Ive seen being passionate about his most iconic character as much as us fans.

The Last Jedi felt like it was written by someone who hates Star Wars.

I remember the scenes from the last battle in the first movie, how the different groups had commanders, how these commanders issued orders, and how they were followed. I remember the transmissions from ship to ship, clear when made by the speaker in the scene, but choppy when heard on the radios of the other fighters. This was probably the most realistic air battle scenes I have ever seen in any movie (I'm a military veteran), and added greatly to the reality of the movie.

There was such great potential for Luke to be this buddhist-style teacher, forcing Rey to work through paradoxes and become one with the world to understand the force, but then in comes Rian's inability to write any kind of character and he became a directionless buffoon

Finn must be the *bestest evah* floor cleaner in the star wars galaxy if they ship him to every important military installation in the first order just to clean their most important top secret project floors.

The worst part is that they actually had the opportunity to have Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford in that movies and they fucked it so badly ...

First off, I’ll just say thank you for the incredibly in-depth review of this movie and the other movies from a series that were a huge part of my childhood. I was born in 1975 and don’t have any memories that don’t include seeing the world through a lens of (original trilogy) Star Wars-induced wonder, optimism, and creativity. It very much shaped my ideas of right and wrong, personal responsibility, bravery in the face of overwhelming odds, and self sacrifice in service to those you love and others in general. Obviously I’m not a hero who helped save the world, or you would have heard of me, but the way you view heroism in general can affect the way you approach smaller conflicts in life. What these later movies have done to damage that incredibly inspiring and beautiful story is shameful, and the screenwriters and movie executives should be embarrassed. I really appreciate the time, effort, research, focus, humor, and writing that you have put into not just this video, but all of the related videos in your analysis series. The quality speaks to your talent and dedication, and in my honest opinion, they stand head and shoulders above the other critiques I’ve seen. And there are some other very good reviews out there, so that is no small praise. One final compliment, since I’ll only leave this one comment as a blanket over the whole video series- I love that you use Battlefront II gameplay footage as the background. I own a single video game, and a single game console, and it’s a Sony PlayStation 2 with Star Wars: Battlefront II that my stepsons got me a couple of years ago for Father’s Day. They knew that it was the only video game that I ever really enjoyed, and played countless hours of in the years between 2005 and 2010. I had several spinal surgeries starting in 2002 until 2006, so I was confined to a recliner or bed for many months throughout recovery, and I played that game so much that I eventually beat it. I then didn’t pick it up again until their incredibly thoughtful gift. It was very cool to me that you mentioned it as “Battlefront II- the good one”- and it sparked me leaving this comment, as I’m rewatching this entire video series for the 3rd or 4th time. So- sorry for such a book-length comment, and thanks again for such a great set of videos.

1:17:35 Right there. That face. I can't look at the expression on Mark Hamill's face there; it hurts me. Kathleen Kennedy and Rian Johnson did this to him. They destroyed, mangled, twisted, and literally killed his beloved character, and they killed the spirit of his story. They hurt Mark in every conceivable way, and they don't feel the slightest regret over it. The Last Jedi may only be a movie, but the actions of KK and RJ have betrayed who they really are: heartless pieces of human excrement.

And listening beyond there, it's obvious Mark Hamill was chafing at the abuse of his character and the standard Hollywood "kill the old, replace it with the new teenage "better version" ASAP", and you can see Mark damn near breaking down in tears before Simon Pegg says how much Luke Skywalker meant to him.

Mauler's critique of TLJ is my favourite star wars trilogy.

I sincerely thought holdo was a double agent by the way she was acting. Almost like Krell in the Clone Wars Series. Nope... Leia wakes up and pats her on the back.

It's post-modernist Star Wars. It's not a conspiracy and it's not even subtle. They subverted everything, provided no grand narrative, destroyed character archetypes and taught no lessons. It fit that pernicious 'philosophy' to a tee. Why did they do it? Because they believe that all those things I mentioned are evil, terrible things that ought be gotten rid of. Luke embodied those things which is why they tossed him away like an old, smelly sock -like older fans of the films. This film was an intentional middle-finger.

The first proper sequel we got to the OT was Timothy Zahn's Heir to the Empire book trilogy, set about 5 years after ROTJ. And imo one of the best things about it was how it showed both what the New Republic would be like then and what the Empire remnants would be doing to try to get back in power. We hear about systems/planets that support either side, and we see both sides working to get more planets to their side. Things like that don't seem to have been a priority at any part of the process in making these new films.

This is 5 years late, and honestly a super small thing, but I will say, I appreciate the humility and willingness to adapt the presentation of your videos to the requests of parents or children alike. Language matters more to some, less to others, but your consideration of your audience as a whole regardless of your own views or values is commendable, especially in this day and age. Just wanted to state my appreciation for it!

Mark is never laughing in any of the interviews. It's like the people around him either can't realize he's not joking OR realize he's serious and laugh to confuse the audience.

Mauler's script for the poe/first order conversation at the beginning is spot on and I would've loved to see it in the movie without a word changed. It still would've worked for hux if they hadn't decided to make him an idiot

I am a disabled Vet, who was almost a teen when I stood in line to see the first Star Wars, "A New Hope" in 1977. I don't get much money on disability, so I was saving up for months to see TLJ. When the Force Awakens came out, it left me with more questions about what happened to my hero, Luke Skywalker. I had to see this The Last Jedi... to see my hero. There is so much more I could say about this... but I will shorten it. When the movie ended... I was literally, "Numb." Those who loved the movie got up and walked away happy. Those of us left in the theater... staring at the blank screen with jaws open, were trying hard to process what we just witnessed. Feeling numb, I didn't want to speak to any one... I wanted time to digest, to process what had just happened. I woke up the next day, and I woke up angry! I was angry about this messed up movie, and what Disney and the idiot director did to my religion... the Jedi, my hero Luke Skywalker! It was then, that I started looking on KZfaq for comments from others. I had seen that many people had put out spoiler warnings... so I didn't go online much before going to see The Last Jedi. Now... I was trying to find if others felt the way I did. But then, the attacks happened. I tried to tell my side of why I hated this movie... I was attacked by young teens and young adults for not liking it. I was told I wasn't a true fan from people who were born during the time of prequels. So I decided to say online, one more thing. "I hated what Disney and Rian Johnson had done to my Star Wars, killing off all the EU and other canon." "This new Star Wars, wasn't MY Star Wars any more and I had no interests in seeing what Disney does with it." "So I would do the only thing I had the power to do!" "I posted that I wouldn't spend any more money, or watch any more of the Disney version of Star Wars from here on out." After months of listening to many people speak on why they hated The Last Jedi... many I agreed with. I found your post and I loved it! You have spoken exactly on every reason why I found the new Disney version to be a whole different story than the Star Wars I grew up with. I will forever be connected to the original Star Wars. I agree with this ENTIRE video. TLJ was Rian johnson saying "the star wars you knew and loved is dead, i dont just not care about it, i laugh at it and think its stupid. now feel emotions about my new 'strong' characters!". Rian johnson was THAT kid on the playground that would argue that you didnt kill him while playing star wars, because he had a magical armor set and force powers that gave him multiple lives.

About the bombers being "like WW2 bombers"... what? The B17 and B24 were incredibly durable and many managed to flay all the way back from bombing runs with half the crew maimed or dead and a significant portion of the plane blown off. They wre also slow compared to fighters, but that means moving at 3/4 or 2/3 the speed, not crawling along like an inebriated snail. The B-29 was not slower than most fighters, and could fly so high it was practically unreachable. I have no idea what WW2 bomber Rian is trying to portray, but I doubt one anywhere near as horrifically ineffective as the ones In the film ever existed.
