If people want an example of Hayden's acting skills, I would point out the scene where Anakin's mother dies. A review I read said it best: "You can practically hear his mind snap." He goes through grief over her death into mindless rage so well, and it shows in his posture, his breathing, and his facial expression. This is where Darth Vader begins, and he played it masterfully.
@tomnorton4277
@tomnorton4277 2 жыл бұрын
The best part of Hayden's performance was his eyes. They say eyes are the window to the soul and when Anakin looks up from Shmi's body, you know you're looking into the eyes of Darth Vader. And unlike in Revenge of the Sith, he didn't have yellow CGI to help him. It all rested on his acting abilities. Hayden Christiansen is a master of physical acting. He can convey everything you need to know with his expressions and body language and this makes up for his only acting weakness, which is the way he delivers his lines. However, the context of his monotone voice still fits Anakin's character because 1) Jedi are supposed to speak like emotionless warrior monks and 2) it mimicked James Earl Jones' speech patterns, with the only difference being that James has a very deep and booming voice.

Another great Hayden scene in terms of acting was when Anakin realised Padme was pregnant, or the the one where he tries to convince Padme to join him after he turned to the dark side.

I agree. However People doesn’t like his acting mostly because of his line delivery and the writing. But compared to his emotions and expressions the lines don’t really matter because as a filmmaker you are supposed to “show not tell”. Star Wars is supposed to be viewed as visionary silent films.

What's the difference between Han and Leia's love story and Anakin and Padmé's love story? Simple. *Padmé:* I love you because you're the only person who treats me as a human being with feelings and not just as a politician. I love you because you're the only person I can be myself with, the only person I can relax with and who makes me feel good. I love your way of being spontaneous and showing your emotions as they are, you’re not as cold and formale as the politicians I’m used to interacting with, you’re yourself with me, and I love you for that. *Anakin:* I love you because you're the only person who really understands me, you're the only person I can confide in. I'm surrounded by people who don't appreciate me for who I am and who try to change me, but you appreciate me for who I am, and I love you for that. *Leia:* I love you because you're a piece of crap, and I like pieces of crap. *Han;* I love you because you're a stubborn woman, and also because you are hot as hell. And I like it. Change my mind...

as anomaly said, ive been an awkward teen and the girls who had crushes on me did act like padme some were even colder and more distant to where i thought they had contempt, some sat by me and just stayed there stiff, as someone who doesnt just like someone sitting by it made me feel uncomfortable and if they would of just let it out they had a crush on me it would made me run these people being critical of them have a very warped romatic comedy view on dating...even adults act like them, two people who may be into each other will definately be hesistant to open up about that if say they have lives where that could make both their lives worse or their circles wont accept it... people who are into each other and fear giving into it just dont get together because of some rainy night and one is depressed, it actually happens alot more like anakin and padme's did where the circumstances got them together and then when they are finally alone in the room with the fireplace

@@neotoad456 I didn't see where Anakin was being all that awkward, I mean yeah he had awkward moments but those moments made sense and felt natural given what was going on. Plus he wasn't constantly like this in every scene so I don't see why PT haters complained soo much. There are plenty of romantic scenes in movies and shows where the characters were awkward around each other or said something awkward so how is that a bad thing. I wish us PT fans didn't have to justify this, there is nothing to justify. This isn't a problem nor a flaw. It's almost as if PT haters expected Anakin to be something else and when it wasn't, they couldn't make sense of it🤷.

@@tomnorton4277 I haven't seen The Shining (yet...) but that sounds very similar to what happened with Hayden. The character was 'whining all the time' (yeah I get to hear that a lot... Did they even watch the movies?) so the actor must be bad. It's so stupid honestly. I still find people who think that Hayden was an objectively terrible choice for Anakin ;-; And I have no problem with people who say that they didn't subjectively like his performance, that's of course fine. But some people just say that Hayden was objectively a bad choice for Anakin. They didn't even try to find out WHY George chose Hayden or WHAT he had in mind for how Hayden should act.
@tomnorton4277
@tomnorton4277 2 жыл бұрын
@@VibingMeike Here's the thing. They don't like the CHARACTER, so they assume that means the actor sucks even though he played the character exactly how he was meant to be played. Many people can't separate their subjective biases from objective quality. Is Hayden Christiansen the greatest actor who ever lived? No. Not even close. His monotone voice was intentional but there were still some moments, such as the "This is outrageous" scene, where speaking in a monotone just doesn't work for somebody who's suppressing years of pent up resentment. However, Hayden's a master of using his expressions and body language, so you don't even need to listen to his dialogue to understand what Anakin's thinking and/or feeling. Speaking from personal experience, I initially didn't like Peter Capaldi as the Doctor. It took me 2 seasons to warm up to him and even when I grudgingly admitted to myself that I didn't dislike him anymore, I didn't care about his character enough to keep watching after Clara Oswald left and the storyline with River Song was wrapped up. If I wasn't so invested in Clara, I would have given up on Doctor Who much sooner because I subjectively didn't like Capaldi's Doctor until near the end of Season 9. However, I'm self aware enough to know that my dislike of Capaldi's Doctor was SUBJECTIVE. Steven Moffat INTENTIONALLY wrote him as an asshole because "It's time for the old beast to snarl at you for a bit". I knew the context so I never denied that Capaldi's a great actor. I just didn't like his Doctor until he grew out of his snarling beast phase, which was an intentional character arc.

Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson inThe Lighthouse is haunting and beautifully acted. Martin Sheen in apocalypse now is haunting and beautifully acted. Hayden’s performance was objectively shit. I think the only reason people give Hayden a pass is because the awesome lore the prequels established, but other than that he was an emotionless whiny weirdo who’s descent into the dark side was poorly established, and you can tell Hayden and Natalie’s chemistry was almost non-existent. If you like his performance and the prequels that is perfectly fine, we like what we like, but i don’t understand people who speak as if they are objectively good films lmao

Qui gon is objectively the main character of phantom menace. He is the hero. His actions and philosophy are what win through the defeat of the antagonist. It's a duel of the fates. Qui gon gets obi wan to train anakin... but it is his loss that guarantees anakin doesnt get a proper father figure. Lucas's story telling is so complex that the main character can win and lose at the same time. That's why dumbasses are confused. Maul loses. But the fall of anakin is sealed. Qui gon dies, but his will wins through. It is only though the next films that qui gon's death has real consequences to anakin. It is through obi wan's failings and palpy's plans that anakin falls. Qui gon isnt there to help him through these.

Yoda doesn't say that strength isn't about muscle. He says, 'judge you by my size do you? As well you should not." He also says, "luminous being are we, not this crude MATTER." Both are arguments about being any Jedi not just being their physical self/body. That they shouldn't, therefore, be too limited by the physical world. Where a ship is, 'too big,' to move with their mind/will driven powers, especially relative to their physical size. So that moving a pebble, should be the same as moving a ship. To characterize this as, 'Yoda says muscles don't matter,' is misses the mark entirely! Oh, and it should be noted, that Luke says he is looking for a great warrior. Yes, Yoda says, 'wars not make a person great,' but that's more to the idea that wars should generally be avoided, and going to war, and even being good in them, doesn't someone a great person. Which again, is a fair statement in general. This does NOT mean that Yoda wasn't able to kick ass in wars. Which yes, he absolutely should be able to do as an incredibly powerful, and skilled Jedi. Which he, and the Jedi didn't WANT to fight a war, as Yoda says in AOTC where he scoffs at the idea of them winning a victory. Because he sees the Jedi, and Republic, has been dragged into a war. But again, just because he, rightly, doesn't want to fight wars, doesn't mean he shouldn't be able to kick ass as a warrior. Jedi's are WARRIOR monks, not just monks. So yes, his, 'flipping around with a lightsaber,' is in keeping with that. Especially as it comes after a non-lightsaber Force battle.

One thing I love about the pre-Disney lore is that you don't really need it to understand Star Wars, but knowing it only enhances the worldbuilding. At one point, I was in a debate with a sequel fan on whether Holdo was right or not (obviously I was on the "not" part) One of her arguments was "Kylo captured Poe and force tortured the info of BB8 having the map to Luke out of Poe, so Kylo could've Order 66'd Poe and turned him into a sleeper agent" To which I responded "no, the Kaminoans specifically told Obi-Wan that the Clones were programmed from cloning to follow orders and that Sheev had the authority to give these orders. Out of every force user in the series, only Rey has given a direct order to a mind trick target 'you will undo these restraints and leave the door open', as opposed to Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon implanting ideas into the target's head that they then believe, such as 'you do not need our identification', 'these are not the droids that you are looking for', 'you do not want to sell me death sticks, you want to go home and rethink your life' and 'credits will do." At any point, I could've dropped the EU content that specifically called this power "force suggestion" and that Jedi did not directly command a target most of the time, but this just goes to prove how the lore isn't necessary but still enhances what's on screen. Yes, the Clone Wars had a few instances of direct commanding, but the one I remember required Anakin, Obi, and Mace to all focus their commands on the same target to take them somewhere, and even then that target led them to a trapped room full of auto turrets that almost killed them

Another story: the same person said "Star Wars is for kids", to which I reply, "No, Star Wars, ever since ANH, was always made to have a little something for everyone. (Insert a ton of dark Star Wars scenes here) Hell, the prequels started because of a blockade made by the Galactic Trade Federation and Intergalactic Banking Clan, which both, by name alone, implied massive power over the economic value of the Republic Credit, which is why nobody on Tattooine would accept credits to fix Qui-Gon's ship, leading to the pod race scene and discovery of Anakin" Prior to that, I kinda looked up the "Republic Credit Standard" on wookiepedia and got greeted with six words: "Backed by the Intergalactic Banking Clan" These six words, combined with [Meti: Not the Bad Guy]'s analysis on currency in the Fallout series, already gave me a massive explanation as to how dangerous the blockade was to the republic economy But first, what do these six words mean? See, in Meti's video, he explains that a currency is backed by something when at least one organization accepts this currency in exchange for a good at any time. American dollars started with the Gold Standard where, at any time, anyone could just walk into the backer's place and exchange dollars for gold, but this standard was abolished. This carried on to the Fallout series where bottle caps could be exchanged for water bottles. If the IBC was the only organization backing credits, then at any time, if they just so much as *refuse*, then republic credits would be worthless and planets would be forced to mint their own currency - this is where the pod races come in: Tattooine already minted its own currency and so Qui-Gon needed to make a quick buck Small side note, the IBC backed credits with Muunilist resources: apparently their home planet, Muunilist (the one with the squidward-headed people that Obi assaults in the Gendy Tartakovsky cartoons) has a ton of volcanoes that spew out valuable minerals, so at any point, anyone could just walk in there, hand some credits, and they'd get some sweet valuable minerals in return. If the IBC said "no, we won't give minerals anymore", the republic credit would be worthless. Other small side note: the IBC backed republic credit standards for both the republic and separatist sides of the Clone Wars, which is why Serenno got away with ordering a massive ton of droids

Based on the criticisms I have seen towards Anakin is that he"s is "too awkward" and "too whiny" and some have stated in the comment sections of some PT hating videos that it's because of bad writing and directing and I was like... WTF😮. How? I have ave only been a SW fan for a few months now and when I watched TPM for the first time I knew that Anakin would be the way he was in AOTC due to what was set up in TPM. I figured he would be cocky, arrogant, bold and emotionally troubled. Obviously there are other traits and elements to Anakin's character in AOTC but I didn't pick up on the rest of his traits until I started to rewatch the movies. So I don't get why people thought otherwise about him and found him unlikable. He was hella likable in AOTC, sure he had flaws but he had positive traits too, it's like PT haters and critics just ignored the many scenes of him being funny, silly, playful, snippy, bashful, intelligent, innocent and absolutely gorgeous😂😂

I guess I'm in minority but I always liked Hayden. He did exactly what Lucas wanted him to do. Too bad a lot of fans misunderstood him. I do agree his delivery is sometimes strange but this is due to the attempt to mimic Vader's voice. His emotional/angry voice is fine. And of course, there's nothing wrong with his expressions or body language. Seriously, watch his scenes with foreign soundtrack, you'll see what Lucas saw.

Most people like Hayden nowadays because they’ve had time to digest why Anakin behaved the way he did in AOTC. Stuff like him having to repress his emotions for 10 years people don’t learn until the refugee ship scene. By that time there were several scenes of him being angry or forward/awkward that made people say, nope don’t like this guy. Also people inventing fan fiction in their heads of who he was for nearly two decades didn’t help either. It’s really just people taking the “bad” scenes from these overblowing them to an outrageous extent. It doesn’t help their they’re surface lever takes either so that’s how the bandwagon started. Look at the CGI argument for example. No research or thought put into those arguments, just CGI is bad and he is lazy now apparently.

@@scepticalbeliever Hayden's a master of expressions and body language. If Anakin never said any dialogue, you would still have a good idea of what's going through his head simply by watching him. The fireplace scene is an excellent example of visual storytelling that is somewhat ruined by corny dialogue. And yes, I know it's intentionally corny but it distracts people from appreciating the physical acting. People who say that Hayden and Natalie don't have chemistry either don't know how to read body language or simply can't be bothered to do so. They focus on what is SAID rather than what is SHOWN. Anakin and Padme were practically undressing each other with their eyes and were eager to jump each others bones but both knew it was a bad idea. It's masterfully conveyed through body language. Hayden Christiansen never got the fulfilling career he deserved and although Natalie Portman managed to make one, she apparently had to deal with a bunch of idiots who associated her with the "Prequels are bad" movement and didn't recognise a good actress when they saw one.

My personal theory is that the use of the Kamino poison dart was deliberate so that the Jedi would be put on the path to discovering the Clone army. They would then inform Palpatine about it (not knowing he was behind its creation) so that he would have an alibi for why he knows about this army. I think the Jedi told Palpatine about the clones before Geonosis I can't remember.

Why didn't they just get better child actors? Why didn't they just get better male actors? Why didn't they just get better female actors? Why didn't they get better actors? It's a shame those children got the worst of it as they didn't already have a career when everyone was given a direction that no actor could have saved, let alone an inexperienced one. It's an even bigger problem that the actors played their roles spot on, but that wasn't enough. The prequels could never have satisfied an audience who already knew what they wanted. By the way. Your videos really make me appreciate what George wanted to do with the prequels a lot more. I never hated them and don't think they ruined Star Wars or anything, they had some great worldbuilding. But the only one I really like to rewatch is Revenge of the Sith as that to me is a good movie in itself. I'm editing this pretty much throughout the video haha. Time to share some fan theories about Dex. I always saw him as a rough man who had settled down for a more peaceful life as a restaurant owner. In his past he might have been an explorer of some sort, and maybe not on the right side of the law. So maybe he is respected by that kind of people and his diner work as a safe haven where it's easy for him to snap things up. What I'm aiming for, he might be Long John Silver. I was sincerely pissed that the fanbase caused Lucas to sell the rights only for use to end up with the garbage of the sequals. Awesome video and really informative. I really like the prequels films and all the world building around them. The part about the poison dart and the blaster, I think that Darth Tyranus ordered Jango fett to get a Bounty Hunter to threaten padmé(knowing that the Jedi will be protecting her) after the Jedi had caught the Bounty Hunter, Jango needs to use a poison dart from Kamino to allow the Jedi to find the clone army on Kamino to start the war because even though it might be possible to find out what blaster they used it probably won't necessary take the Jedi to Kamino because blasters are most likely get resold a lot more making it less likely for the Jedi to need to find out where they originate from. While poison darts are less common and are unlikely to be resold as much because of them only being able to be used once meaning it's more important to find out about it and where they originate from but that is why I think they did it in the story.

This is a really well done video. I agree 1000%. Thank you 🙏. I love ‘Revenge of The Sith’ but I’ve always loved ‘Attack of The Clones’ maybe more and of course ‘Phantom Menace’ has some of the best music and lightsaber duals.

I can't believe that they defend last jedi, force awakens and rise of skywalker for everyone Okay if the prequels are trash according to them, then the Sequels are garbage as hell

2:12:40 I prefer 100 times more this song than the stupid Yub Nub song. and I'm an OT fangirl, and Return of the Jedi is my favorite movie. So yes I actually prefer the new ending instead of the original one.

Watchmojo put Ki-Adi-Mundi on their cover of "Top 10 Jedi who survived Order 66" even though he's literally the first character we see dying from it.

Another common criticism of the Prequels that Watchmojo didn’t bring up is that Anakin in TPM is a “Mary Sue” First - the term “Mary Sue” is wrong because Anakin is a boy. Anakin is NOT a “Mary Sue”, indeed he’s the opposite of a “Mary Sue”. Just because you are gifted and talented doesn’t make you a “Mary Sue”. People think that because Anakin can fly a starship without learning. That is because he is extremely clever and also if he is a Mary Sue then why can Luke fly an x-wing without any prior knowledge??? Also, if you are a Mary Sue that also means that you are free of pain and suffering and you are liked by everyone. Anakin is born a slave and is unwanted by the Jedi Order unlike Rey, who is accepted and welcomed by pretty much anyone including the Skywalkers and the Resistance. Anakin is not a “Mary Sue”. He is a tragic hero.

7:46 "sorry for wasting your time with this sob story CRAP" - Please, if I worked for a month on something and it got shut down I'd be a bit more than miffed. The only 'crap' here is KZfaq's fuck shit algorithm and monetization guidelines. They have KZfaq Kids for a fucking reason. Furthermore, it's not like swearing is something you hear EVERYDAY. Keep up the good work man.

Are they really using the Anakin is "Too Whiny" argument as a legitimate criticism. I hate this one soo much. I don't know what these people think being "too whiny" is but Anakin was not even close to being "too whiny". He was more emotionally stunted and frustrated then whiny. He had grivences and complains that it seemed only Padme would listen to. Yes he was immature in a lot of ways but was also mature in others. Not to mention Luke was similar to Anakin so I don't see how they give luke a pass but not Anakin. Yeah Anakin was a lot more on edge and was more conflicted and had a lot more complaints than Luke did but still in each case it makes sense so what's the problem. Anakin the the PT was just as likable as Luke in the OT. They are flawed characters, especially Anakin and that just makes them so enjoyable and compelling to watch.

Reupload. That explains why i was so confused. Anyway like i said in this video the last time thank you for defending the prequel since i have been hearing stupid arguments against them for years. And by the way i just watched the Phantom Menace debate you did in EFAP and i gotta say that i liked how you kept your cool despite the constant interruption and how something as simple over why the Trade Federation wanted over a Trade dispute was so hard to get by the opposite side. I mean it's quite simple and even if you don't get it the fact that they started to attack the Jedi and the planet makes it clear who is in the wrong.
