My Appalachian grandparents and parents made this but they also grew their own hogs and made their own sausage. They raised 95% of their food in the huge garden and dried their own herbs, and had chickens, and killed a steer and deer every year and raised hogs. They made butter and rendered lard. That was the real Appalachian way!! No processed packets and box mess or pouched stuff and processed canned stuff!! I miss them now.

BRENDA. Hi from Dallas, Texas . I am a 71 year old, southern cooking gal that cooks everything from scratch like you do. I want to let you know a little easier way to do your cabbage to where you don’t have to add all that amount of oil that you just did. Cook your bacon first and then set it off to the side and leave just a little amount of grease in your skillet for seasoning. Add your cabbage and your chopped up onion and salt and pepper it and put in about an inch and a half of water. Put a lid on it and cook it and that will help release that water out of your cabbage and it will cook your onions done at the same time. We can also add a tab of butter in there if you would like to, but you don’t need to add any more grease or oil. Then when it’s done, and if you have too much juice in there, just drain it off. Then add your crumble bacon on top. That’s It. So tender and good.

My great grandparents lived up until their nineties. They ate everything from their garden. My great grandad used to smoke his own meats and made his own sauerkraut in barrels. My great grandmother used to cook with lard and bacon grease. They never had any health issues until they were elderly. They worked very hard up until their death. My great grandmother also had thirteen children. My husband and I have eleven children.I honestly believe it's the chemicals and pesticides they put in our foods now that are harming us.

I love the name of your page. make as many as you can. I couldnt think of how to handle not having mommy and daddy. I love them both dear but a girl is usually closer with their mom. I made as many as I could. seems like most of my life I worked so much. I was a single mom at first and then I just worked for our family. it made it easier. Then I got the ra,. it started to finally to take a tole on me. I just couldn't work and keep house do the shopping the cooking and the laundry. I love to try and do some things outside. My hands hurt a lot oat times. I now enjoy doing the show. David is getting laid off soon and we will be able to d more shows. he wan ts to take a few months off and catch up on his honey do list. He is the same as me. and did since teen years is work. the break will spoil and he isnt going to want to go back. he has to have insurance.. take care and thank you so much for watching. we are recording tomorrow and it will take a couple of days to get it on. God bless and ask your mom as many question as you can about family in the old days and lear as much as you can.

I love your cooking videos even though I cannot make most of them due to my KETO lifestyle but it reminds me of my childhood! Would you 2 consider doing mukbangs? Basically, its a video where you are eating a meal and talking etc. These kinds of videos are good for people who are alone and want to eat along with people they enjoy the company of. You could list the recipe of the meal you are eating or even better, make the meal and then have the sit down "eat with me". Just a thought!

Brenda and David, I’m a retired RN who worked on the heart floor. 1 or 2 tablespoons of bacon grease never hurt anyone. I’m 71 yrs old, diabetic, pacemaker, and high blood pressure. However, other than rhythm problems, my heart is without any blockages. If you cut out everything you are used to eating, you are more likely to splurge eating. So, take it slow and easy. Cut out as much salt as possible, but spice your food with it. Just less than you’re used to using. You can have red meat 2-3 times a week. I fix homemade biscuits at least once a week, cornbread, and homemade white bread. I’m as healthy as a horse, and my Dad died at 59 with his second heart attack. What I’m trying to say, is moderation is the key to life. Love your show. I’m in West Virginia.

I just fixed this yesterday same as you described. It's a wonderful one pot dish. Cabbage chucked up, potatoes cut in half or quartered depending on size, chucked carrots, onion quartered, and kielbasa. Add half stick butter, salt and pepper to taste and enough water to cook everything. Cover with lid and cook until tender. Delicious!

Blues cooking I love it!! I have been wanting to make this and I am going to follow this exactly. I agree with olive oil is better. Also cook that kielbasa drain it. You definitely have a great start as you cook every thing home made. Just have to get rid of the processed foods, canned soups. Read the labels, and vegetable soups are great, Ground turkey or grouch chicken.. Haha my husband cant cook, he will actually call me to say what is there to eat int his house when I am away. You two are so cute together!! Lots of love.

I also make it with sausage and potatoes with garlic and chicken broth, little red pepper 🌶️ a meal and of course ,corn bread.love hearing your stories, always makes me smile😊. Brenda, next time add less oil and add about a 1/4 cup water instead. The heat will evaporate the little amount of water, leaving a softer cabbage texture. I always fill a cup with water and add a small splash at a time. It will be less calories with a very tasty fried cabbage dish. Also at Wal-Mart in the Hispanic section, they sell a pork seasoning made by Goya. One small packet from the box says it has the flavor of half a ham. It's very good for seasoning cabbage, pinto beans etc. Check it out..that way you don't need any added oil or grease.
