According to a source withing Capcom US, Marvel Super Heroes VS Street Fighter was developed for the sole reason that X-Men VS Street Fighter was too hectic. Sounds like a lame reason but whatever the reason was it resulted in an amazing 2D fighter from Capcom Japan. One of the best ever 2D fighters of that generation.

Damn was the Saturn really in that bad of a position in 98 where such a main stream game like this didnt even make it out of Japan!

Sadly yes. The West was only interested in the pop culture PlayStation with its 3D and many shitty 3D games from western developers. Looking back at many of those games now is painful while playing stiff like this still feels fresh.

Yeah, sadly the Saturn was doomed from the start but even I wonder to this day how things would have turned out had policies been different and more games made it out of Japan. Sony would have still dominated but it would not have been such a massacre. I have stated multiple times that 85% of my Saturn collection are imports and for good reason: the games were great and a lot had English options even though they were never intended to sell outside of Japan. Take the RPG Shadows of the Tusk, you can play the entire game without difficulty as all the battle and menu options are in English! Wild stuff.

DejaVoodooDoll wow... compared a lot to Nintendo games, guess we know how you lean ;) All kidding aside though I actually got my Saturn back in the day up in Minot ND of all places. The store had X-Men vs SF, Samurai Showdown 3-4 Collection, and Deep Fear but no one was buying it because you would need a modchip or converter which was clearly displayed so they would not get angry returns when it would not work. When my parents went to buy me a Saturn for Christmas 1997 the owner had bought an ST-KEY 4 MB to throw in for whoever would buy the games just to get rid of them, he even threw in the Virtua Stick (arcade fight stick) just to get rid of the stock as the Saturn was dead here in the States already. Total cost for Saturn, 4 MB RAM converter, games and stick? $120. While the midwest may have gotten imports around this time it didn't meant they would always sell. Hell, I remember the hassle I had to go through to import an N64 before it launched in Japan.

I love my Sega Saturn port of this game. I've had some great times playing what is essentially indistinguishable from an arcade game on any TV... including a 60" LG OLED (RGB to HDMI) display at Best Buy a bit back. With the arcade stick, this game is a blast. I don't feel bad for the PS1 version at all, Sega needs to take the wins where it can get them.

While the insanity from X-Men vs. Street Fighter was missing, Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter is still another fine 2D fighter in the Marvel vs. Capcom series. Once again, the PlayStation version Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter EX Edition was the only Western release, yet it still can't hold a candle to the Japanese-only Sega Saturn release. As guest fighters go, Norimaro sticks out like a sore thumb given he was created by Japanese comedian Noritaro Kinashi (hence extra copyrights during the attract mode, although the name was decided during a contest); he was almost primed for the overseas releases (complete with translated win quotes, pre-match dialogue with Apocalypse, and bubble speeches) until Capcom removed him at the last minute.

Looking back at how bad Capcom was on 16 bits consoles (SNES and MegaDrive), the progress they made on Saturn is really incredible. In the final days of the console, they managed really impressive ports. Even if many of their games were actually fun on SNES/MegaDrive, they were most of the time badly optimized. Wasting ROM space, bad quality audio, poor color choices. They were really beginners on the home console market. However, on Saturn, they made steady progress and eventually came to the level we know, with flawless ports such Marvel vs Street Fighter and SFZ3. Good work !

The PS1 might have been the King of the Hill back in the mid 90s but that doesn't mean that it was unbeatable, as Capcom proved with the ports of their fighting games. Sadly, there were too many factors that piled up and condemned the Saturn to its untimely demise. Still, it's great to see that it wasn't the humongous failure that pretty much everyone think it was. Greetings from yet another Colombian dude, Mark. Great content and great channel.

It's one of the two games I show off for how fast retro games could load vs even new games we have today, blows my mind.

Once again, we are reminded that Japanese Saturn owners were blessed with their home version of Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter, while we in the U.S. are again cursed with yet another inferior PlayStation port. The PS1 version is definitely a lot more playable than X-Men vs Street Fighter. It even has a unique feature to that port where you can chain 3 hyper combos together (similar to Street Fighter EX). Ultimately disappointing, but it was still enjoyable as a rental back in 1999-2000. Thankfully I own the Saturn ports of both vs games now.

I wish we live in an alternate universe where CAPCOM re-releases - along with Resident Evil 2 - X-Men Children of the Atom for the Saturn. this time with 4MB expansion support. I LOVE that game and I'm still kinda annoyed there's no way to play it on a console, in full arcade quality. That said, MSHvsSF is probably my favourite entry in the series - it's there with the original Marvel vs CAPCOM - and the game I have to play at least once, every time I fire up my Saturn. Stellar port.

I was just thinking that same thing the other day, If these Japanese only games came to the west the Saturn might not as flopped as hard as it did. Lots of cool RPG's, especially when JRPG's were in fashion, then of course a ton of fighters and shooters, what could have been...sadly had no chance.

I knew about this game back when it came out but I never imported it till recently. For me it was not a "I MUST HAVE THIS GAME!" like it was for XMen vs Street Fighter, but it is still fun. It's amazing that there is ZERO LOADING TIME and is still somewhat affordable compared to Street Fighter Zero 3 which literally jumped $200 in price overnight and has stayed there for some reason. Cant wait for the next video and great work as always.
@RetroCore

sadly Street Fighter Zero on the Saturn is crazy money simply because the Dreamcast port was kind of messed up. Until the later PS3 release came along the Saturn port was the ultimate home version of Street Fighter Zero 3.

But here is the weird thing though, SFZ3 was around $80 on average until 3 yrs ago and then overnight it jumped to $200+ range, like people suddenly realized it was good. I just checked on prices and on eBay at least its jumped even higher to $350+, this being the most insane example: www.ebay.com/itm/Sega-Saturn-Street-Fighter-Zero-3-RAM-Pack-Japan-very-good-condition-F-S/192516625431?epid=1007751629&hash=item2cd2e29417 Seriously, do they expect this to sell??? Demand I suppose, though I'm not sure where it's coming from. Is the PS1 version an uncommon release? Darkstalkers 3's another example: pretty good port for the PS1, but complete Euro and US releases can be overpriced when compared to the virtually arcade perfect Japanese Saturn version. Gouketsuji Ichizoku's another one: the SFC version is widely regarded as superior and is dirt cheap, while the poorly regarded Mega Drive version costs rather a lot.

Ah, an another game I love until death. Imo the game wasn't the best in the gameplay department, but the presentation was AMAZING. You normally don't see announcers shouting out super moves at the end of the match in a fighting game, do you? The saturn port is indeed superb, as you can unlock Cyber Akuma/Mech-Gouki in this port specifically. It's really a shame the Saturn port never came into western territories.

I always wondered how Saturn would handle a CPS3 game like SF3,JoJos Bizarre Adventure or Red Earth?(especially Red Earth since there was never a home port of that game.) I mean the Dreamcast handled SF3 and JoJos really well,and there was even a port of Jojos and Capcom vs SNK1(a Naomi game) on PS1.So I think the Saturn would of handled them well with a 4MB cart.
@RetroCore
@RetroCore 6 жыл бұрын
I reckon the Saturn could have handled CPS3 games quite well. They probably wouldn't have been arcade perfect but would have looked far better than CPS2 games running on the PlayStation. You never know, maybe Capcom would have requested a 10MB RAM cartridge for the Saturn had it been as successful as the PlayStation. Wow, just imaging that!!
@portalsofmadnes
@portalsofmadnes 6 жыл бұрын
wolfniggr1 Yea it maybe wouldn't be a good business choice to do so,but it's still interesting just how much more the Saturn could do with all its untapped potential.Especially considering how good Capcom was at exploiting the Saturn's capabilities at that point. Capcom released a fight pad similar to the Saturn's, in partnership with Ascii or Hori I believe.

Probably my favourite VS game, Its a bit more hectic than XvsSF , but not nearly as crazy as MvsC2 , which went out of its way to be flashy (still a fantastic game though). Capcom really did support the Saturn (other than RE2) , which is quite interesting given in previous years they were quite cozy with Nintendo. Of course they were big enough to support just about everything.

At the very least there was less childish crap talk . In local multiplayer (either at home or arcade) , swearing at someone was likely to result in a fist moving at high speed towards you. I was never quite as big as fan of COTA, although that may well be because I only played it after I played XvsSF at the arcades (must have been around 97-98). Its certainly a good game, though it does suffer from the same issue the original SFA did (mainly that it was outdone by its own sequels in every way)

Great video as always Mark, the Saturn was surely a beast in 2D Power, even in 3D (Games such as Zero Divide makes perfect example that Western developers, were just lazy). The PlayStation is still a nice console... But I really like to skip most 2D Fighters since they are a pain to play in my opinion.

Playing 2D Fighters on a PlayStation just isn't fun. None are as good as the Saturn ports no matter what the fanboys say. I always find it funny how PlayStation fanboys always bring the 4MB Ram cart for the Saturn in to question when they can't win a 2D fighting port argument. So sad.

They are BUT you can get a Pro Action Replay with the 4 MB Auto RAM and it will bypass the region lockout. I bought one from Play Asia and it works for every single Japanese game I play on my US Saturn EXCEPT this game, for some reason it only seems to be just me in this instance. I have talked to other people who have this PAR and don't have an issue what so ever (I also tested it on my backup Saturn and it still would not work), thankfully I still have my original ST-KEY from 21 yrs ago that is slowly dying but can play this without fail. PAR's are not too bad in price, selling for $25.99 USD currently and you can also turn it into a Pseudo Saturn if you want to. I love my Saturn and have sung it's praises for 21 yrs now, especially if you love import collecting like I do. A surprising amount of games are in English, even ones that were never released outside of Japan.

However, I don't think Capcom should have attempted ports of these games to the PS-1; as the PS 1 wasn't tuned for these kinds of games. interestingly enough- I can't seem to find any evidence of missing frames in both the arcade and home ports despite the game having to store four characters in rom for use at one time. The CPS2's data limit is 384MBit,(as I remember reading)- but Vampire Savior actually maxes out the available memory.

In terms of character animation is was but as an overall package it may not be. In X-men VS Street Fighter the biggest issues were loading and character animation. These two points have been improved this time but made worse are the voice and sound effect samples, stage animation (the night city stage is missing cars and animation) and the speed at which the game runs.

For some reason I kinda haven't played this one that much. I think I was already playing Dreamcast or thought that the game was too similar to the previous one. I played a lot the first one and also Marvel X Capcom, but this game was kinda on the limbo for me. A friend of mine had the Saturn version and I played on the arcade once or twice, but not nearly what I've played the other games from the series. There is a Marvel X Capcom for PS1, right? MxC on PS1 sounds terrifying :P

The PS1 version, despite it's cutbacks was at least competent this time (other than it's awful audio), it's actually playable, unlike X-Men Vs Street Fighter. The funny thing, while the Saturn port is expensive these days, the PS1 version has also gone up big time, and the game for the PS1 is not worth people's asking prices these days.

Thats not true at all.Psx was very fine for 2d and it had many 2d games in the end,if not more than Saturn. Kof 98-99,Last Blade,Guilty Gear,Metal Slug X,Marvel vs Capcom,Capcom vs SNK Pro,Jojos Bizzare Adventure among others,are gems that Saturn never saw. Saturn is better on 2d always ofcourse,but without the ram cart,is not that much better.
@RetroCore
@RetroCore 6 жыл бұрын
The only reason the PlayStation got those 2D games that the Saturn could have easily wipe the floor with is because the Saturn just wasn't a viable platform at the end of the day due to the lower number of units sold. In it's home territory of japan is was Favoured by Capcom but for developers who back then were not as wealthy as Capcom, they decided to port to the PlayStation. It's a shame SNK when that way but they were loosing money by the late 90's so it makes sense. Every SNK game that's on Saturn and PlayStation is better on the Saturn. Even without the RAM cart the Saturn still has more RAM than a PlayStation (a whole 1MB) and still has faster disc access and faster CPU speeds. When it comes to 2D, the PlayStation can be good but never as good at the Saturn. Just like the Saturn can be good at 3D (look at AM2's fighters or Dead or Alive) but never as good as the PS.

+Retro Core I played DOA on Saturn probably much before you (along with other japanese rarities),back in 1997 as a booleg cd import. I was a big Saturn fan in a very limited Saturn club (you see most people were Psx obsessed here) with a modchipped Saturn,4in1 Action Replay cart and I truly enjoyed it under my 29'' Trinitron in its full RGB scart greatness,all these back in the days and not now.So many games passed from my hands (copies ofcourse not originals,they werent cheap though mind you). You are ofcourse right that Saturn is better in 2d even without the 4mb cart,noone can deny that. But the difference without it its not huge.These games I mentioned before are very good along with other great ports like SFA3 and a reality that unfortunately Saturn didnt have. The ram carts really made a difference on 3 games: XMVSF,MVSF (for their tag system) and the first Metal Slug (atrocious loading on Psx). On all others Psx ports were fine and fully playable and enjoyable,who can deny that? As for 3d,yep Psx is better here and the difference is big enough because Psx had more polygons and special effects in its gpu,in games like Gran Turismo 2 or Tekken 3 for example. Still Saturn showed us great 3d games like DOA you mentioned or Panzer Dragoon 2 and others,but all these could only achieved under bloody programming pressure. The point is that we agree mostly but dont agree in some details.

Hmm, the problem with the PlaySation is it's lack of RAM and also that it takes longer to load than a Saturn due to a slower CD drive and memory access time. Fanboys blow my mind with the mental gymnastics they pull to claim one game is better than the other, even when it's clearly not. I love all the systems new and present (mostly) but if one plays better than the other I fully admit it, embrace it, and endorse it. Take for example a non retro game (at the time of this comment) Nier Automata. It is hands down my pick for best game of 2017 to the point where I bought it four times: two for me (PS4 and PC versions) and two copies for friends to play (PC). Turns out that the PC port is not that great (I didn't know at the time! I DIDN'T KNOW!!!) but runs better than the PS4 still for frame rate and with the XBox One version coming out that looks to be the best overall so it gets my endorsement even though I don't have that console. For some people the Console Wars never ended I guess.

@worsel555

Personally I would not because I am happy with the PS4 and PC versions that I own (If you go for PC make sure you download the FAR patch, fixes a lot of problems and makes it close to console), if you own an Xbox One X then definitely get it. This generation of XBox didn't really speak to me and everything they put out I can play on my PC so I skipped it for now, the only games I would play on it would be backwards compatible games that I can do on my Original or 360 that I own. Either way I suggest playing Nier Automata any way that you can, it's a great game and im happy that XBox One owners can get in on it.

Again the same situation with XMVSF,extended ram cart saves the day,without it-no tag,no instant loading and fewer animations on our beloved Saturn. We are still waiting you to tell us the plenty Saturn tag fighting games that dont use any extended ram cart,please respond
@RetroCore
@RetroCore 6 жыл бұрын
The Saturn would have had the tag option but it would have had lower animation frames for sure and longer loading times. What you have to remember is that the Saturn has a faster disc access speed than the PlayStation and a whole 1MB more RAM as well. For your other question, I didn't see it. I don't go back to older posts that often, no time you see. Anyway, For some reason I was under the impression that Golden Axe the Duel and Fatal Fury 3 had tag modes but I was mistaken on those.
@vasileios6301
@vasileios6301 6 жыл бұрын
+Retro Core Tag option would never be there without the ram cart,the 4mb cart was made especially for XMVSF to make tag possible. Still it would be better on Saturn yes (noone denies that) but the difference would be much more less. Yep there is no tag fighter on Saturn without an extra ram cart,thanks for confirming it.

Whilst I get the PS version is poor you could only play the Saturn version with the RAM expansion cart. Take that out of the equation and it would have been a very different port.
@RetroCore
@RetroCore 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah but the game came with it so there's not really anything to complain about. With the RAM card it cost only a little more than the awful PSX version. And if you already had the 4MB RAM from another game you could just buy the regular release for the same price as the PSX version. I always find it funny that people bring up the RAM card issue when a Saturn game is better than the PlayStation version yet no body ever mentions RAM size when it comes to SNES VS Mega Drive or even the PC Engine using a RAM card to extend the memory to 4MB like the Saturn. Even VS fighters without RAM card support on the Saturn are better than the PlayStation version.. Vampire Hunter is a prime example. There was nothing stopping Capcom from asking Sony to release a RAM update for the PlayStation but they didn't because they knew RAM is not the only thing required to pull off games like this running on the Saturn. The PS hardware just wasn't designed to push so much 2D at the speed required. Kind of like how the Saturn is worse at 3D. It can do it but no were near as well as the PlayStation.
@worsel555
@worsel555 6 жыл бұрын
Keep in mind also that the PS1 used to have a parallel port on the back that was removed due to piracy issues (I would presume), I have a Pro Action Replay for my PS1 and it allowed me to play imports and "backups" but it would not have been too hard to throw some RAM into it.
@RetroCore
