First, I enjoy your instructional video's. Second, thru my experience with club bending, I found that putting the club's in hot water before I start bending the irons, has been beneficial to " soften " the iron for easier bending. The hot water does not sacrifice the epoxy adhesive hold to the hosel and shaft.

Like the tip on changing loft and lie. Bought a home kit from Golf Mechanix and was disappointed that the bending clamp and angle scale are 2 different sets. Have to remove the club from the clamp to measure the bend. Seems they have come out with an integrated set now. The bar is good. I’ve found clamping the stand to a stable workbench also a challenge.

I recently took my 6 iron in for lie angle change at one of the big box stores.....well I looked over at this young man clamp in and put the bending bar on the shaft instead of the hosel. Well it was a graphite shaft and he broke it. They did replace the shaft and had one of their better guys adjust the lie. This is why I try to do my club work myself....just don't have bending machine.

Thanks AJ for another excellent video. I have a set of pxg 0211 and 0311 p iron set. I do not hit the 0311 as far do to the weaker loft. Would it mess with the bounce of the club if I had them bent stronger. Not playing bad with them , just seems like I should be hitting the farther. Love the feel of the forged..As Always thanks for all you do
@EFGMC
@EFGMC 2 жыл бұрын
It's a 1 to 1 ratio between loft and bounce, so delofting will reduce bounce also. 1 or 2 degrees of change usually won't have much impact in the bounce though unless you are already starting with very low numbers.

All about getting the club squared up in the machine. Any LL machine is really just a clamp with a couple protractors attached to it. A calibration block can also help if you're worried the arms may be bent and giving incorrect angles.

@EFGMC
@EFGMC Жыл бұрын
4 degrees can be a lot depending on the brand and material used. Usually will know pretty quick whether you can get more than a degree or two out of a head. Things to look out for; 1) You will add bounce to the head 2) You will lose offset so if you have minimal offset to start with you may end up with negative offset.

Hi AJ, I found your channel via GolfWRX Forums and have subscribed. Thank you for doing this, it is really helpful. In this video, it looks like you are bending a Mizuno MP-18 SC iron. I have a set of these, and am trying to bend the offset off of them while keeping the lofts to spec, i.e. not just bending them to weaker lofts to remove 'some' of the offset. I grew up with 'no offset' irons (not minimal offset, no offset) and really prefer them. "No offset" irons are almost non-existent now. My question is, have you done this, and if so do you have a preferred method to do this? I've taken the MP-18 set wedge, and using my Mitchell Steelclub machine, starting near the top of the hosel, did three bends in the "12 o'clock to 6 o'clock" plane, dropping down about about 3/16" each time. This got the club quite a bit weaker in loft. Then I dropped down to the bottom of the hosel as far as possible and bent back to spec loft in the same "12 o'clock to 6 o'clock" plane. This actually almost worked, with really no weird look in the hosel. A few days ago, I read a reference to doing these bends in the 10:30 plane, thus making the club weaker and flatter and removing the offset, then bending the club back to lie and loft spec in the 9:30 plane VERY low on the hosel, to keep more of the removed offset intact. Does this sound feasible to you, or have you tried it or know a better way? Make a video on the best way to do this, and thousands of single digit handicap boomer golfers will beat a path to your door. Thank you.
@EFGMC
@EFGMC Жыл бұрын
These were the MMC MP18s but pretty similar overall. Been thinking about doing a video on this subject. I think each iron is going to be different in how you have to tackle it. Your method you described first is how I usually try and deal with it. Pull out the offset first then go back and try to get the loft back to spec.

Hey AJ, i was fit for a Mizuno Hot Metal iron set .25" longer, 1* upright, and 2* loft weaker than standard. I bought the iron set standard to save approx. $600. If i change the loft and lie to match these specs, will they play much differently then if they were .25" longer? Will bending the lofts weaker mess up the club bounce too much? Thank you! Love the channel.
@EFGMC
@EFGMC Жыл бұрын
Honestly 1/4 length measurements is something that bad club fitters do to seem more exact. Anything less than 1/2 is just a waste of time. As for loft lie, 2 degrees should not be an issue with the bounce. PW would be the only club where it could possibly cause any noticeable change but I would be pretty surprised if it did.

You might try some light weight grips, some of the 30/35 grams ultra light grips would add more head weight. Going from 50 gram grips to 30 gram grips would as several swing weights to the head. Of course the weight screws might be cheaper than a whole set of grips.

Hi AJ, love your channel and all your videos. You have showed and make club making fun. Have a question when measuring loft and lie on a spec gauge does the offset effect your measurements. If measuring a callaway apex pro 19 - according to callaway website the specs for a 8 iron standard length 37 loft 62.5 lie and 2.5mm offset . Should my loft/lie spec gauge read these numbers and ignore the offset. Are these the numbers I should be looking for or is there some mathematical equation I need to consider with the offset.
@EFGMC
@EFGMC 2 жыл бұрын
Don't need to worry about the offset. It has no impact on the loft or lie. They are independent. That being said, adjusting loft can change the offset, just so you are aware.

True forged heads will always be softer than many of the “forged” heads out there who are more forged in name than anything else. Softer heads will show more bending marks but that is part of the trade off for having a soft forged head.

Does adding loft open the clubface or close the clubface slightly? and vice versa. I'm trying to make a 59 degree lob wedge and I'm deciding whether to bend a 58 or a 60. I tend to overdraw my shorter wedges and slice my longer clubs. Thanks
@EFGMC
@EFGMC 3 ай бұрын
Face angle isn't considered when bending irons. However adding loft will reduce offset and vise versa for lowering loft, and a more offset club will want to fall more closed in general, so you could make that argument.

No. Softer clubs often need to be bent at least 1 a year just to keep them in spec. They don't get weaker from it, at least not in any amount that would be noticeable. Perhaps if you bent the clubs 5 degrees back and forth repeatedly, they might fatigue but short of that I wouldn't worry.

Can you change lie angles for non forged clubs too? Does the metal have memory, IOW, is there a danger of the lie angle reverting to original?
@EFGMC
@EFGMC Жыл бұрын
Yes you can bend cast irons. They just might take more effort to bend. Metal memory is not a thing. What is happening here is the head slips in the jig during bending so the final read out says one thing but is incorrect. Then you center and square everything and take another measurement and you see that the club actually did not move as initially thought.

I am asking because I recently ordered two irons, one from Callaway and one from TaylorMade to test, and asked for a one degree upright lie and made some changes to the standard loft on both as well. Should I have them checked or can I assume they are correct? If they are not correct, what does something like that typically cost to have adjusted?
