Saving private Ryan is a propaganda movie entertaining for a couple of hours. The Thin Red Line is a painting of industrial society and humanity.

I just finished the book. Does Willis have a racist thought on page 83? Like is he saying "(that's you)" to the black police man being gang related? Little random tidbit I thought might be interesting to bring up.

I remember being rocked by Saving Private Ryan, and I still enjoy watching it from time to time. When I first saw Thin Red Line, it was inevitable that I would compare it to Ryan, and being a slower movie with fewer action scenes, I walked away thinking it was "good, but not great". After watching Thin Red Line a few years later, (and being a bit more reflective), I realized it is the superior story. While Ryan relies mostly on spectacle and the single story line, Thin Red Line combines a few threads together into one larger narrative. Ryan is about saving one person because the Army told them to, while Thin Red Line is a number of individuals trying to save themselves from the Army. I love both movies, and will watch them when I need whatever they each give.

Thanks for that. I wish I could speak half as eloquently as you. I am Australian but I enjoy Cormac's novels exceedingly. I have read all of his except, No Country for Old Men. The Crossing is my second favorite novel of his. Breaks one's heart at times & I can't get enough of his philosophical angles especially running into the Old dude. Interestingly I couldn't remember he wrote parts from the She Wolf's point of view, Thanks for that again! Oh yea I love scotch too :)

Kingdom had useless and pointless characters, like the talking-human-male, fleshed out nothing of how speaking-human survived, didn't explain why there was only one Gorilla and one Orangutan. The girl was emotionless and somehow knew exactly what to get, where to find it and where to deliver it too. I felt it was the weakest of the series thus far.

This was really good, I actually didn't realise how deep the religious undertones in the story were even if I did pick up on the more obvious parts about how ideas can be twisted and used to people's benefit. I don't live in the US but I can definatly see how this applies to anything involving history. It's so easy for it to get misunderstood for what it really was. It really is such a great movie.

Thank you so much! I wish there was even more exportation of those themes in the story, especially from the religious angle. I totally think it works in almost any context, which is why I said it’s sorta a timely yet timeless story. I’m really glad you liked it!

I think if you really love the dune movie/ book and you want to dive deeper into the characters that you saw in the movies.... You need to backtrack and read the prequels which of the house trilogies... House harkonnen house Attreades house carino. It will give you a back story on all the characters you see in the movie and it's a really great 3 book story all by itself.

I just finished the Border Trilogy and I think it might be the best book series I've ever read. I thought Cities of the Plain was an excellent ending to the trilogy, though I can't say for certain whether or not I would have enjoyed it as much as I did without reading the other two books first.

Agreed! It’s one of my favorite trilogies, too! It’s certainly a fitting ending, and I can’t imagine on missing out of the richness the other two novels give these characters and the landscape.

Great video. I was actually very engrossed in this book. Just finished it today. I found the most beleaguered part to me was when the Gypsies towing the airplane ran into Billy on the road. That strained my attention span a bit. There are other parts that ran along the same line but none of them made me lose interest. I am used to McCarthy’s style though. The only book of his I’ve yet to read is Cities of the Plain and I’m starting that as soon as I post this comment. Really enjoyed the video. I’ll definitely check more of yours.

There were a few moments like that for me, too! Same thing for me with the airplane. I bet you’ll enjoy Cities of the Plain. It’s excellent. The pacing is a lot less meandering than the Crossing, too. You’ll have to let me know what you think about it. Thank you for the comment and for watching!

New sub- just from the intro- you have a great vibe I would love to see you lean more into the psychoanalytic side and perhaps its sociological and political implications- it really is a useful framework that unites these elements - exploration of trauma re-enactment and cultural myth through the lens of horror. Nicely done guys 🫡🙌🏽💗 ✊🏽🇵🇸

Nice video. I still have an excellent Bushmills Irish whiskey from Northern Ireland. Might have to have a sip. I haven't heard of any of these authors or books; the underground church sounds very valuable in times like these. I'm not a Christian, but I recently got turned on to a new tranlation of the Gospels by Sarah Ruden.

Thank you! I need to get into more Irish bottles. I've had pretty limited exposure there, so I might add Bushmills to my list. And I agree. I hope that translation treats you well! I haven't heard of that one. I'm going to look into it.

Christmas horror films are true classics. Black Christmas, silent night deadly night and Christmas evil bring us back to the spooky nature of Christmas when they would tell ghost stories. Christmas at its core doesn’t have anything to do with Jesus….Christians tried to make it their own like Halloween to “justify” it. Christmas is pagan

While I appreciated the content generally, the music looping and not progressing anywhere, and perhaps due to its volume relative to your voices, ended up being distracting to me. Perhaps with more dynamic vocal presentation and setting the music volume a little lower overall may make the looping less of an issue. But, that said, thank you for bringing a new film to my attention, and doing so in a way that makes me want to watch it.

There is a difference between realism and historical accuracy, as I said in my comment on Fury. On the realism side, Saving Private Ryan is incredibly realistic in most every way, with a very few exceptions...such as bullets not being able to kill you more than a few inches underwater. But on the accuracy to history side, SPR does fall down on a number of significant issues. It is not Pro America propaganda, but it does put forward propagandistic ideas on more than one occasion...as when Miller says all the armor is at the bottom of the English Channel...which is not what happened...or when a mission is sent to get Private Ryan. The movie is not a true story, and it differs from the actual history of D-Day in many significant ways...but the basic plot is loosely based on the 4 Niland Brothers, one of whom served with the 101st Airborne Division. However, when 3 Nilands were reported dead, no mission was sent to get the last brother, and it turned out that one brother that had been thought dead had actually only been captured. There really was a Company C of the 2nd Rangers that landed on Omaha Beach, but they were commanded by Captain Ralph Goranson, and they did not land quite where it was shown in the film. Probably the most important historical thing that Spielberg got wrong is that he had the boats that carried the Rangers to the beach being driven by Americans...they were not. On D-Day, the boats that carried the US Rangers to the beach were driven by UK sailors of the Royal Navy. There are many other things in the film that are not accurate to the real history of D-Day, but that one really fails to honor some of the men that fought and died at Omaha Beach, so it is definitely the one most worth noting.
@RosesRedThorns
@RosesRedThorns 2 ай бұрын
One of the ways in which I found Saving Private Ryan propagandistic is in how it showed a german POW being shown mercy by a more intellectually minded, american soldier, only to return with no lessons learned, no insight obtained, etc, and the intellectual character being shown learning from the experience only one lesson: that you do not show mercy to german soldiers in that conflict. This was the exact opposite of the lesson that should have been learned, since any conflict this gigantic in scale would, as its primary insight, have had the one that there is far more nuance to it all than "good vs. evil" or "allies vs. axis" or any similarly simplistic narrative.
@iKvetch558
@iKvetch558 7 ай бұрын
There seems to be a lot of mixing together the ideas of "realism" and "historical accuracy"...they are not the same thing. Fury is quite realistic in many ways, though not all...but it consistently fails on the side of historical accuracy...and there are significant issues with both. The fact that they had a real Tiger tank to film was great, but the way they used it was completely ridiculous to anyone who knows the reality of Tiger vs Sherman combat...and as others have noted, Belton Cooper's book has been debunked. On the realism side, the fact that Ayer decided to add so many tracers effects in post production makes one of the most basic parts of combat almost completely unrealistic...more like laser beams than real tracer effects. And the fact that there is no artillery or air support shown, and not even any mortars in existence in the entire movie, is both completely unrealistic and very much wrong in a historical sense. Fury is a very well acted movie, and has some incredibly compelling scenes, but it is much much more of an action film than a realistic or accurate war movie.

I have watched six different reviews of this book now, and this is the best one. How nice that you actually read the whole book first! Almost none of the other reviewers bothered to. As an atheist, I found it was the use of magical realism that made the religious moments so good. Each character had a unique relationship with God, too, that was explored so well before resolving. I had the experience of feeling like I was reading a collection of old folk tales woven together to make this story - probably due to the early chapters way of breaking events up. It made the story feel timeless is a great way. Anyway, great job, man. Love what you had to say.

Thank you so much for this comment and for watching! I'm shocked others would even consider talking about it before reading the whole thing. Totally agree about how it already feels timeless.
