Slide Hammer: amzn.to/39WR9Ka
In this video I show you how to install the rear crankshaft seal on a BMW n55 engine without using the specialized tools that are normally required and cost around $300. All you need is a hammer and the old seal to get started!

Absolutely love the videos! I have learned so much about engines from this series! I hope you do another rebuild after this one so we keep getting this sweet content!

I'm loving the series! unfortunately I'm not yet in a point of life where I can buy a project BMW, but watching your z4 and now your 335i videos are really cool. it's inspiring to see passionate people doing what they love. and, for anyone who's wondering, it takes about 2 and a half hours to binge all the 335i rebuild videos haha

Really appreciate you watching! It's been truly an amazing experience rebuilding an engine, wish I did the same on the Z4 instead of swapping the engine, but I don't think I was ready at that time. I've been lucky to have an understand fiance (where she can't use the garage for months at a time) and enough spare time to do this and really have a great time.

if you have about $5000-6000 to spare, and are ambitious, you can buy one from Salvage, at Coparts

Dude - I’ve been thinking about whether or not to gently stretch the crank seal like you did. I figured the rubber would return to its smaller diameter and get tighter once installed…do you agree? Did this method work for you? Thanks for this video.

I've worked on an N52, but not N55. On the N52 and I thought most BMW's, the outside diameter of the crankshaft seals (180 degrees apart), have a groove that's supposed to accommodate sealant and prevent leaks from the parting line/joint of the bed plate. Therefore, the manual and instructions point out the need to line up these grooves, use primer and the appropriate sealant. Just curious if these procedures do not apply to the N55? Kind regards, Terry

Very curious why you cannot just install the front and rear seals onto the crank shaft BEFORE installing the crank into the engine. Then you just install the bedplate over the seals. There seems to be no risk in installing this way and much simpler.

Not a mechanic, so I would have to say no. I just like working on my own projects in my spare time.

did you not need to align the seal? Also did you need to add Loctite or sealant to the two edges of the seal. (where the two pieces of the engine mate holding the crankshaft)

Not on this one. You DO on the front crank seal.

@@SimpleCarGuy Thanks for the reply. I saw this video for Rear Mail Seal replacement for N54 and they used a sealer. I am also getting mixed answers searching on internet forums. I am going to do my rear main seal on a N52 during a clutch & flywheel change. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i72glchyzLTQdps.html&ab_channel=Garageaholic

I’m just going off what BMW has in their instructions, so there might be a better way to do it as you mentioned, but it isn’t necessary if done right. Good luck!

@@SimpleCarGuy ohh gotcha. i'll use my best judgement when the time comes. If the seal bore is pretty smooth overall i would imagine no extra sealant is necessary.
