I have very little sympathy for a man who abandons his wife and six children because it's just too hard and then starts another family with another woman. There should have been punishment for that but not murder. And if John Best wasn't happy with his lot, he should have gone back to Canada. No tears shed for either man. Thank you Brief Case for your well researched and much detailed account, and your usual beautiful text.

Wasn't such a Wonderful Life for this George Bailey. So tired of hearing a lot of men at the time abandoning their family because it got too hard. Running off with his wife's half sister. He was an a hole, but didn't deserve to die like that. Thanks again for this case, BC.

Very detailed story. So sad this man walked away from his second wife and left her with his 6 children , 2 of which where his former wife’s. It’s a shame that her own sister took up with him and had her own child. 7 kids with no father.😪

I'm surprised that the police were actually able to conclude that Best murdered George Bailey after first deciding that bailey had been killed while seated in his wagon, then deciding that he had been killed in the kitchen, then changing their decision to his having been killed while climbing the barn cellar stairs. It seems like sloppy police work that they didn't notice the bloodstains on the storeroom's floor and walls until Susie Young pointed them out. 🙄

Blood stains in a storeroom aren't a red flag on a farm. Livestock could have been butchered there or iron oxide paint, which was common back then, could have been prepared/spilled there. Without a smoking gun you really have to adjust your theory as more/better evidence presents itself.
@J-Williams

I'll volunteer my "camera'. For most of these you'd only need like 5 or 6 actors to pantomime out the parts with lots of voice over narration. 2 or 3 mains, 2 or 3 for witnesses and lawyers. Brief cameos as the judge. Make it a recurring thing. Costuming is gonna kill the budget though. But as for scouting locations 80% of these are on farms so no need to build sets. Let's do this!

You're captivating to listen to, but part of me kept imagine seeing Brief Cat also listening to your voice on KZfaq. I also couldn't stop thinking about that Bailey abandoned his 2nd wife with 6 kids, and 2 of them wasn't even hers! Not that it means that he deserved being murdered, but still, what a crap thing to do, and on top of that, he abandoned them to instead live with his wife's half-sister. I tried to consider whether I thought anyone else could've done it other than Best, but my thoughts just returned to that mess with Bailey's poor 2nd wife having to leave her own kids with different relatives, and start working as a housekeeper for someone else, which presumably means she didn't get to see her own kids much after that. And what about the 2 kids from his first wife who died, what a start in life they got...

Good morning! I can’t imagine how Mrs. Bailey felt knowing her husband left her for her half sister Plus the fact that they had six children together, and I’m sure that was so hard on her and back then as you know, certain things are looked down upon. When I heard about the union disputes, I’m not really surprised anyone was killed at all, which is not only heartbreaking to his family, but his six children . As for mr. best, he seem to be in and out of trouble with the drinking, and of course, is attitude, and once he was found guilty, we usually find out what the punishment is going to be, which, of course is death. This was a pretty horror story for everyone left behind and spite him hurting his wife the way he did. No one deserves to be killed in the manner that he was. I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving with friends and family and a nice and relaxing holiday weekend Bless 🙏🏽 Keep warm

Others have mentioned the Breakheart Reservation in Saugus, but it's also of note: there's still a bridge crossing the Floating Bridge Pond. The current bridge doesn't actually float, but the pond is still called Floating Bridge Pond. The road which crosses is called Western Avenue in Lynn, and is also known as Massachusetts Route 107 or The Salem Turnpike. It's been a direct route from Boston to Salem for hundreds of years. The road which passes by the Breakheart Reservation was originally called The Newburyport Turnpike - another main spoke radiating from Boston's hub, in this case to Newburyport, so it's directly on the way to Maine. Saugus calls their stretch of the road Broadway, but most people know it as US-1 - a route which runs from Key West, Florida to the Canadian border in Maine.

Good morning Brief Case 💼 Hope you have a lovely week! Thank you again for always digging up new stories and creating interesting content for us, week after week! Well Mr. Bailey and Mr. Best...they were just two peaches, weren't they? Thankfully the Mrs. and children weren't around for the ugliness that happened ... tho I must agree it was prudent for Mr. Bailey to withhold Mr. Best's payment til after the harvest n other work was finished. He seemed very shady. And may have done them all in sooner had he been paid sooner. Seems this Mr. Bailey did NOT have a wonderful life! (If you're unsure what the reference is to, "It's a Wonderful Life" is an American classic movie starring a character named "George Bailey". It's a favorite of people to watch between Thanks😮giving and Christmas to help remind us to be grateful, even when things get difficult. And it is a reminder that each of us is an important person in the big picture because we touch more lives than we know. (Resa)

Wow. Abandoning your family back then may have been more common than i realized. My father's father abandoned the famiy when my father was born.

I love these stories! But so sad how crime was so terrible way back in history as it is today..I love how you just tell the story straight!! No opinions of your own..you just tell the story how it is!! Keep them coming!!🙂

Thanks Sheila, I always think that it is not right for me to give my opinion, there are a few cases however where I have one, the Louise Masset case is one I have studied a lot and seems to often divide opinion

Another great case! I must admit, though, it is hard to feel sorry for men thinking they have economic hardships, when abandoned wives have to take up low paying work to support the children these men so casually left behind. Farm workers had low wages? I bet housekeeper wages were lower. (Not a reflection on you, BC! I love your stories. Just my grievance against the inequities of the time.)

I imagine in those days it was probably very hard to find a woman who would be willing to raise your children plus of course raise her own which due to no birth control is unavoidable. I suppose if the woman is poor enough and has a heart, and truly loves you it shouldn't be nearly as hard to find a wife🤷‍♀️. Oh my goodness! I just saw the part about him getting a job for 20 cents per hour😂 he has I believe six children and he definitely needs his ex-wife probably still married to take care of those children especially since two of them are not even his!

It was probably easier than you think, women left on their own with children would jump at the chance of marrying again, there were few prospects for women, especially if they were left with children to raise on their own. Even if they could get a job, they could only earn a fraction of what a man could earn.
