I have but one question... How differently would have Theodore Coneys' life turned out if he would've stayed in school? This was the danger of giving such a diagnosis of lifespan at such a young age. Doctors don't realize that they can put a limit on their patients mentally when they do so. He lived to 84 years old, And now he has no legacy except for squatting in a house and killing a man. I find it extremely sad.

It’s hard to say, because children can be cruel and tend to pick out the “outcasts”, of their peers, and can make school just as miserable if they stay in.

I was once told by a doctor and teacher that my autistic 6 yr. old daughter was "ineducable". She has had significant challenges, but she's in a program where she's learned all the alphabet, how to count, safety signs, about 300 Meyer Johnson symbols, and can communicate in context and sign (she can't speak). She's happy and mostly healthy. She's lived to 36 so far, and is still learning. She delivers Meals on Wheels and recycles materials for her school. Predictions can be wrong. 🎉

Doctors and nurses talk among themselves about life limiting health conditions and death so frequently that they are accustomed to it and they forget that their patients do not, especially about themselves. Something a doctor says a hundred times is a shock for the patient, and may be a worst case scenario that may not come to pass. He seems to have thrived on a diet of prison food to have lived well into his 80s, especially considering that the average age of death was much lower and that people didn’t have vaccinations against common illnesses. Compared to the general population this man was in rude health!

I was totally glued to this story! I've heard more modern cases of people sneaking into attics and making it home, but this is truly something else!! No doubt that Theodore had very bad luck in life and clearly never intended to kill anyone, but what he did next is bizarre! Maybe he pretended it had all been a bad dream..🤷🏻‍♀️ He certainly lived a long life, in spite of doctors believing he wouldn't make it past his late teens.. Thank you as always, BC💼 and happy Monday to all.. 🤗

That said he was a desperate man, who must have seen the worst of humanity during the depression. It brought out the brute savagery in many people, As desperate times do. Good morning Mr.Brief Case, This story was marked by tragedy after tragedy . The death of both parents losing a company and becoming homeless, the stock market 📉 crash. I can’t imagine what it’s like to be homeless during the winter but I can understand trying to seek shelter. First of all, I think he should have never broken into the house of a friend, even though they hadn’t seen each other in years. to make matters worse, he murders and then goes back up into the attic. I can see why people thought the house was haunted, but I think this scariest part is not knowing someone is in your home while you’re sleeping because you don’t know what people are capable of. Sadly how this turned into someone being killed. I can only imagine the desperation of finding a place to keep warm and find some food. He still didn’t have the right to take the life of anyone. Such a tragic story when you can’t come home to your own house, only to find someone in there, eating your food and stealing items. Thank you for another intriguing mystery. I missed you last week. We had terrible storms here in Northern California. We lost power, no hot water and Wi-Fi was down for days. I hope you have a wonderful week and as always looking forward to next Monday. Bless 🙏🏽

I struggle with mental difficulties myself but I’m lucky to have a suitable living situation and a strong support network. I like to think I would have made a deal with him to help him out. I would help him find a job and get him hot meals and in return he would help out around the house.

I feel a little bit of sympathy for Theodore Coneys. The case itself is different from previous ones where a crime is too often committed out of greed or jealousy. Here we have a man nearing 60, in poor health and destitute, who hoped for help from a friend and made the decision of entering a house that is not his without invitation. Everything that went wrong after started with this one terrible decision. It was a fascinating story. Thank you Brief Case for telling it.
@Lucinda_Jackson
@Lucinda_Jackson 4 ай бұрын
And that one decision began as an innocuous one. I'm sure he thought he'd just wait inside where he could sit and rest while waiting for his old friend. And maybe have a cool drink while waiting. Maybe a little something to eat... It just kept snowballing.

You've provided a lot more info on this story than I've heard from any other source. I've taken historical walking tours that go by the Moncrief Pl house, but tour guides give only about a paragraph's amount of info. Colorado has other intetesting cases, such as the unsolved murder of educator Emily Griffith and her sister Florence. And, since you mentioned Canon City, the story of Anton Woode is interesting because of his young age. Denver Post columnist Dick Kreck wrote a whole book on Woode. There are many more stories from Colorado, such as the Bank Vault murders, and the Bloody Espinosas in the 1860s, and the fate of one of their heads being in the basement of the Capitol building.

Why didn't he just tell the guy his situation and say I'll move out when your wife returns from the hospital? Killing him makes no sense whatsoever. On a side note, I found it really nice that the woman who lived next door to the man whose wife was in the hospital was cooking dinner and breakfast for him the whole time. How far removed we've come from helping our neighbors, let alone making them a meal. There was no tv, just the radio and times were tough. I doubt we'll ever get back to those days, but it's kind of sad that we've become so far removed from the people who live next to us. Everyone deserves their own private space and private lives, but it is very heartwarming to know that his woman neighbor cared enough not only to feed him, but go and check on him. I'm sure it still happens, but probably not as often as it did then. We'll never know, but that act of kindness really impressed me.

As usual, I love your content, and the way you describe the criminal and his intentions. Also, the way you envisioned the victims as they truly are. I look forward to each and every Monday to watch brief case. Take care stay well.

Perhaps this is just serendipitous, but Petersburg Illinois, where Theodore's story began was also home at one time from 1831-1837 to America's greatest president Abraham Lincoln and today is his birthday! Thank you...Mondays are more blissful because of Brief Case...it often blows my mind that you mention little hubs or towns that are quite familiar to me, what a small world. Take care.

Such an obvious crime of poverty raises a lot of issues, but the one that I get from this case is: Coney got a life sentence and was instantly better off with an improved living standard and a higher life expectancy. This is called systemic dysfunction.

Hey Brief Case: Have you covered the insane case of Blanache Monnier? This case really reminds me of it. You could probably do an entire series on different cases related to people hiding in peoples houses or being held captive. They are some of the eeriest cases

Poor Mrs. Peters. I can’t imagine what it was like when it sunk in that the killer was in the house THE ENTIRE TIME. It’s like the origin story of so many horror movies.

If he hadn’t murdered his unknowing host, I would have called Theodore’s story sad rather than chilling. I recall a case in the 1970s in Philadelphia, in which a man suffering a mental health crisis shot and wounded his wife on a commuter train, then made his way to their church and hid in the attic for several weeks. I can’t recall all the details, but it may make an interesting case.
