I feel so sorry for Miss Gentle who loved the little boy, had him taken from her then identified the body and his clothes. So sad, poor little Manfred

This sad tragic tale happened all too often in Europe back then. Baby farms they were called. This woman did not kill her poor child.

There were scammers about then and it is possible that 2 women posed as teachers with a boarding school. The problem is she told her sister her son was going to France to be educated there with his father. Whilst understanding a ‘lie’ may be told to his nurse, not to offend her, she had no reason not to tell her sister he was going to a boarding school if that had been the truth.

I find it hard to believe that she would kill the child her lover already knew that the child existed if she was going to kill him she would have killed him and never told her lover about it

Miss. Gentle sounded so lovely and caring. My heart sank when they found Manfred.

An “identity parade” sounds so much more festive than a “line up”.

If my mother were alive, she would have loved your videos. We would have listened to your stories together. She was well educated and watched Masterpiece Theater. Your videos have that special quality.

This is a baffling case. Her story, so naïve and unbelievable it may seem to us, even rings true seen in the context of the times. I just do not know if she was guilty or not - but the contradicting times and witness reports seemed to have sealed her sad fate. Who killed poor little Manfred ? We may never know with utmost surety, but I have a feeling that it was not his mother.

Stories like this are so heartbreaking. As I am listening to this, my little boy - the same age Manfred was - randomly walked over to me and gave me a hug. How the Hell could anyone hurt an innocent baby?? Whether she is guilty or not, someone killed that baby. What the Hell is wrong with people, then and now??? So freaking sad!!

Wow, her defense attorney sounds terribly incompetant. Eye witness testimony available to help corroborate her "story," and those witnesses don't get called? Something weird in that choice.

This is a weird one. I did some quick reading on it, and I am not convinced that Louise did it. Her lover didn't mind the child, the nanny was happy to have him, the sister had offered to help out financially but it was never needed because Louise was doing well for herself, so why would she? And, why would she be so stupid as to let people see her with the child? She really may have been conned - in fact, the situation instantly reminded me about that other video, about a woman who poised as a nanny for single mothers only to get some coin from them but she murdered the babies instead. Louise would have been stupid not to have checked on the institution in person but on the other hand, the idea of someone murdering a child only to get the "fee" is so abominable that such a thing simply may not have crossed her mind and she thought that she could go and check on Manfred later on the adress they had given her later on.

Thanks for a great video. There must be some facts about this situation we don't know, and probably never will. As presented here, it makes no sense that she would murder her own son. She may not have been that close with her child, but it takes a special kind of coldhearted, psychopathic killer to commit that kind of murder. It is almost hard to believe. Very disturbing case.

Her new man made it clear that the child wasn’t going to stop him starting a relationship.no pressure there.The child’s care was being paid for by an outside source so no pressure on the mother for money, this doesn’t make sense

She could have left him with the nurse. It's a bit weird to just let your kid go off with people she didn't know especially as she herself was an educated woman.

I think the case against her is pretty weak. But even if she told the truth, she was pretty negligent.

She may have been wrongly executed. There's suspicion that Manfred's killer could've actually been killers known as the Finchley Baby Farmers.

An eerie resemblance to the recent events involving Casey Anthony. It's one of the more excellent doors into human psychology, mothers committing crimes against their children. I wonder how many similar criminal deeds occurred in history and what string of events made them possible. A good amount of circumstances between these two definitely match.

Odd she killed him when he was 3 and she was 35 that means she has him pretty late in life by the standards of the time most women back then were married by about 20 or 21 if not several years younger. By the time she had him she would have been considered an old maid. Makes me seriously wonder who Manfred's dad was and the circumstances around his birth and if that had much to do with her reasons for killing him.

Intriguing! I read more about this case on Murderpedia and, though I think she did kill Manfred as he was a bit of a nuisance to her lifestyle, there certainly seems to be room for a bit of doubt about her guilt.

He was being cared for she basically had zero responsibility except to just pay the nanny each month and she was making I’m assuming what was good money back then. Wow just yikes! Who sends a 3 year old to boarding school? Louise's story doesn't hold water. Miss Gentle must have been heartbroken. This innocent little boy could have stayed with Miss Gentle and had a life. Louise was smart and evil.

This is so confusing. I can't think of a motive for her to kill her son. Her story sounds barely plausible. Barely.... Just don't understand this one.

It always makes me wonder how many crimes went unnoticed based on lack of identity verification. I'm not a fan of big brother, and i hate the constant need to prove my identity...but i do like the perks of being able to just look at my phone and find details of nearly everywhere or track where i was at a certain time.

Miss Gentle lived up to her name. And I couldn’t help but go back to the one lady your channel covered that killed all those kids , the “Baby Farm” one. The one who’s daughter also did the same thing after the mom was caught.

I could be wrong but I tend to believe her story. The M.O. of the two mysterious women sounds just like how Victorian baby farmers behaved. Also there isn't much in the way of motive.

Hmm this is a tough one. It's possible her boyfriend could have been pushing her to get rid of her son and maybe even gave her an ultimatum. At first he may have told her whatever she wanted to hear but pressured her over time. Can't begin to tell you the many accounts of women killing their kids to be with a man because the man didn't want anything to do with the kids.

They judged her guilty before the trial as she had a child out of wedlock. Had she been a widow i think more effort would have been put into her defence, more public support and she would have been found not guilty.

Amelia Sach and Annie Walters may have being the two women who actually killed Louise Masset's son. The law may have being biased towards Louise at the time because she was a single mother.

The story makes no sense whatsoever. What were her motives? The ‘ evidence‘ is purely cicumstantial.

Did she give any reason why she did it? Any speculations? Just seems so senseless. 💔 Thanks for sharing the story

Seems to me a lot of the evidence was circumstantial. Was there a motive? Her story may have holes in it but was definitely worth investigating further. Both little Manfred and her paid with their lives. Brilliant episode this. Love your channel. 👏🏻👍🏻

I was so conflicted listening to this story. After 3 rounds, all of the evidence, times of attendants', merchants, etc and the time she was last seen with her child compared to the coroner's reports and no evidence aiding her story or the two caregivers, I feel like she did do it. I feel like perhaps Manfred never settled out from being distressed about leaving Ms Gentle. All of Louise's efforts to pacify him failed and she may have accidentally or intentionally suffocated the boy in attempt to hush him. She seems too intelligent to have just randomly given her son to two women in the park in hopes if a great education. She didn't have that as a strain to worry about: she chose to work, lived rent free and Manfred was alleged to have his expenses taken care of by his father. She was a governess, she could have just taught him until a later age. What I don't understand is why wasn't the father questioned to back up Louise's story? On the other hand, I don't feel like her bond is an overtly strong one, so maybe she just got illl with him while he was upset. There was no pressure to disturb her current situation for him...why? I'm still all over the place. I'm tired.

I did look this up and it is also under miscarriage of justice , so maybe she was not guilty of anything. Maybe she just wanted a little bit more for her child than she could give him and was taken advantage of. There were people who took advantage of women who had babies out of wedlock. They take the babies, kill them, and still get the mother to pay for their care. It happened, maybe she ran into someone who ran one of them. The truth died with her but was she really guilty of anything.

Too many stories, & no one else with any motive. Poor little Manfred with no protector except his nurse-carer really-the first one to report his identity & to be concerned that it might have been him. ♥️🕯🍹

This sort of crime happens even today. It sounds so similar to other cases in which the child doesn’t fit into the parents desired lifestyle and so the child is discarded like a piece of trash! I believe the jury got it right! I know I’m not the only one thinking why the heck Louise just didn’t leave her son with the lady who cared deeply for him for 3 years?! I don’t believe she ever formed a proper bond with him since his birth. I also think Louise wanted to present herself in a more grand light and her reputation could have been damaged if anyone knew how little time she really spent with her son. Not to mention his biological father wasn’t really in the picture. Louise didn’t want to keep paying for the needs of her son and the time it takes to raise a child properly. She wanted to live carefree and never have to consider what it would take to raise her son in the future again. So heart breaking!

The Turn of the Century Susan Smith. I couldn't imagine what was going through poor little Manfred's head when his mum who he sees but once a week removes him from a loving home to smother him on the dirty floor of a dark women's room. Utterly disgusting.

I've listened to so many of these Brief Cases, this one seriously distressed and disturbed me most.

I half believe her and half don't. I mean what's the motive? She could have left him with the nanny, but maybe there was a better opportunity for him to have a better education. Every parent wants their child to do better than them. Maybe those two women conned her seeing as maybe they thought she had money because she was well educated, but naive. It's plausible and she may not have remembered what she ate at the restaurant. I mean really how many of us can recall what we are two days ago let alone maybe a week ago. That's trivial at best to use that in court. Sometimes we may not remember our arrival times either. It just seems fishy how they charged her without looking into anyone else, I get it because she was last seen with him, but not sure what to believe. I really want to believe she didn't do it because I don't see a real motive especially when her lover had no problem with her having a child. Why would she kill him when it sounded like she adored him? This just baffles me. I know there are parents out there that have murdered their children, but they have all had a reason, bad reasons of course, but this case there was no reason for it. This was senseless and that poor little boy, my heart as a mother bleeds for him. Breaks my heart.
