We spent the past few days taking down our solar power set up so we could make room for both our existing components and our new ones. With the additional 20 solar panels we are adding, we will be bringing in three times the amount of power we currently are. This means our current solar power setup won't work for us the way it is. Everything needs to be reconfigured to accommodate for the increased amount of power we will be bringing in.
So, is solar power worth it? For us, yes! Our current system is capable of running everything inside our modern off-grid home. Where we run into issues are when we have more than 3 days of solid clouds. This additional power will compensate for multiple cloudy days and allow us to function as if it were a sunny day.
We are a couple who are building our own home from the ground up in the mountains of West Virginia. After living near the city our entire lives we finally decided to sell it all, pack up our 3 kids and live in an RV on our 73 acres while building our own debt free, off-grid house and learning to live a more self-reliant life.

Makes me wish I had become an Electrician! I actually took 2 years of vocational school electronics but never stayed in that field. We jumped over house wiring in one day, not enough time to learn anything. Very disappointing in my teacher at the time.

DAMN, Josh’s “QUALITY OF WORKMANSHIP” is AWESOME. It is nice to see someone who puts “Quality” before “Speed”. Years ago I worked with a master electrical whose work was “SO PERFECT” that the commercial electrical inspector signed off “In Advance Of Completion” due to appointment scheduling issues. I had never seen “Hidden Wire Runs” so perfectly placed.

This is the only KZfaq channel that I like to watch ads on. Cereal ad was great but best ever was Josh throwing that sign out the front door and it landed perfectly sticking up in the yard. That was hilarious. I definitely laugh at your creative ads.

Once you guys have the time and space, Josh should do a whole solar series with a whiteboard and a test bench. Your completed solar setup will essentially by a demonstration lab.

Actually, what would be better than a test bench is to have a scale model of a house, a barn, and a bunch of other things that require electricity to run. Then, Josh just hooks up tiny solar panels and wire, with mini-electronic switches for circuit breakers, mini boxes for inverters, and, finally small 9v rechargable lithium batteries for the batteries. When it is shown this way, I think people will have a better understanding of the system. A technical schematic could also be used in the instruction as well.

I feel your pain Erin. I need to hide my sweets too. My partner and our girls devour all things sweet! My youngest, when she was about 5yo, once found my chocolate and told me she "helped" me finish it! I've been eating it slowly for weeks, and she ate a third in one go.

@@tanja8907 The thing I appreciate is, as hard as they push themselves, they still make the time to spend with and enjoy their kids. I raised a daughter as a single Dad, and we did a lot of really cool, fun stuff together, a lot, but in retrospect I wish I had done more. They are such good parents, and their kids are growing up so beautifully. Their little girl is so delightful. I am enjoying both channels.

I love solar, but these videos demonstrate many of its shortcomings - primarily capacity, space requirements, and cost (both initial cost/installation and maintenance). Solar is simply still out of reach for most people. The ROI is far too low compared to its overall cost if one has ready access to the grid. With that said, it's looks like a fantastic solution for the WWOG family!

The electrical aspect of this entire project, for me personally, is absolutely the most intimidating. I worked in the construction industry for 20+ years. Major regret is not learning electrical more thoroughly. Grew up on a ranch and do find myself missing that aspect of life. Anyway, thoroughly enjoy your channel and the content you bring. Thank you for entertaining me in my sleeper while I sit in various places around the country.
