NOTE: This review ended up being much longer than I expected. It's actually my longest to date. So I split it into two parts. Part 2 will be up shortly.

I kind of like the theory that Torgo is pretty much incapable of refusing an order. Hence the whole thing with him telling them to leave as he's carrying the luggage.

Great news for all those who cringe at the thought of "Manos"! After 52 years, there is a sequel! Yes, Jackey Neyman Jones (little Debbie), her real dad Tom Neyman (The Master), and Diane Adelson (Margaret), plus a cast of tens, have made a sequel called "Manos Returns" which premiered at Crypticon Seattle on May 4, 2018! And I play the sheriff (my dad was the sheriff in the original)! It's much better, so it probably won't go anywhere, and with today's technology, it was relatively cheap to make. Not only that, but David Roy in Houston has also made a prequel, "Manos - The Rise of Torgo," which has just become available on DVD! Yes, yes, there is now a "Manos" trilogy! You're welcome, no problem, we were happy to do it! :-)

I was away at college when "Manos" was made, so I heard a little about it but my dad didn't tell us any real stories about the shoot, especially after the premiere in El Paso that November. Jackey has a lot of stories about it in her book, "Growing Up with Manos: The Hands of Fate," available at Amazon. I didn't even see the movie until MST3K ran it in 1993. My dad was amazed that it was still around and that it became a cult classic. I met Hal Warren once in '66, but didn't meet any others until some people tried to make a sequel in El Paso in 2011, with Jackey and Diane, and me, as the sheriff. That one failed due to money and copyright problems, but Jackey and friends tried again in 2016, and that's the one that is now available on Amazon Prime, along with the original "Manos" and "Manos: The Rise of Torgo." The MST3k and RiffTrax versions of the original are also available.

11:20 Correction. A clapperboard has two uses on a film. The sound is one. The second purpose is to help when it comes to editing the movie together. You see, only on rare occasions are movies filmed chronologically. The clapperboard is used to assist in figuring out which scenes are supposed to go in which respective spot. So, even if a movie is filmed without audio, a clapperboard can still be important when it comes to editing.
@PandyBong
@PandyBong 6 жыл бұрын
Tyrant Gregcag Furthermore, it is a way of naming each scene, shot and take and is an important financial tool (or was anyway). Film is expensive, but more so is the development of it. So, during shooting you have person (forget his name) take notes of loads of different things happening, including if the director/d.o.p. are pleased with the take. Any but takes are scraped plus the ones marked say poor-average and the decent-excellent ones are sent to development and then to the editor. This also makes his work a bit easier, as he doesn't have 50 takes Od something but maybe 5-10. In the old days anyway. So, a clapper would always be used even if without sound - which doesn't mean this director had any idea of how to use one

Regarding Torgo's knees..... Another (!) story I've heard is that yes, he is a satyr... but Reynolds never put the leg prosthetics on correctly. This gave him the huge knees and stumbling gait, and - this being 'Manos' - Warren refused to re-shoot the initial scene, simply saying, "Okay, he's now just a weird cripple! Roll with it, everyone!"

This movie is a turkey. No doubt about it. But honestly it IS creepy because like MST3K joked, it does looks like a snuff film. However, for its time, 1966, this coulda been a contender. Its too easy to clap along with MST3K's riffs which I love, but Manos as a story isn't bad. Warren actually covers a lot of bases that horror films usually have. Stranded in Deserted Place - check Creepy caretaker/Lab Assistant - check Damsel in Destress - check Lingerie Witches - check Satanic Cult leader Further, the satanic cult film genre was non-existent in 1966. Manos predates both Rosemary's Baby and The Excorcist. The Master's costume was rather contemporary compared to something seen in the Kenneth Anger film "Invocation of my Demon Brother." In fact, I can only wonder what Kenneth Anger would have thought had he seen Manos. Harold Warren was actually a horror movie visionary. Its a shame he never knew what he missed.

Ohh "Daniel der Zauberer" is a movie about one of the most annoying "Germany's Talent" contestants. What is noteworthy is that that movie actually had a very good cast with people like "Ulli Lommel" who worked with people like Andy Warhol, Russ Meyer or Rainer Werner Fassbinder. It also game a large role to "Peter Schamoni" who in 1962 signed the Oberhausener Manifest in which film makers declared their claim to re-invent German movies as an art form.

So, Joyce Molleur was originally supposed to play one of the "Master's Wives" but broke her foot. That's why the completely redundant "kissing teenagers in car" scene is in the movie. But what was Bernie Rosenblum's (her partner in the scene) role before that happened? The cops appear in another scene later on, they would have been there anyway - but did Bernie just get hired to make out with Joyce? If so, good for him! I don't know why I find it weird that little Debbie was the "Master's" daughter in real life, but I do...

Minor correction: A clapper board is used in MOS scenes (scenes without sound) to display the scene number, camera angle and take information in the leader of the film so the editor can sort out the clips. It isn't just for syncing sound. However, you may be correct that this guy didn't understand its function in any case. Just sayin'.

I have seen "Manos" - The Hands of Fate after spending extensive time on KZfaq looking up clips of bad movies, and eventually I learned of its existence. These things happen you know. Now its up there with movies such as The Room, Battlefield Earth to name a few. One movie that I have not seen however, but judging from what I have seen looks to be just as bad is a gem called "Sting of Death" from 1965. Anyways, there is no such thing as too much of a bad movie, even when its this level of bad. Can`t wait for part 2!!!

How hilarious is it to look back at the origins of this movie and consider how ultimately correct the filmmaker would be proven in his contention that any idiot can make a successful horror movie. Aside from sound synch, the other reason for a clapper board is to write the scene number, shot, and number for each take to aid in editing.

Omg, that bit with the clapperboard reminds me of the clapper shot in "The Body Shop." It takes a special kind of editing incompetence to accomplish that.

The little kid voice on Debbie was the worst fake kid voice I have ever heard. Jackey Neyman, who played Debbie is the daughter of the man who played the master. I am friends with her on Facebook and I love how much she talks about this movie.

Daniel Küblböck who played Daniel the Wizard has been presumed missing since 2018. That film was awful though, I actually thought I was watching some Behind the Scenes documentary, not the actual film!. At least with Manos it survived, although in a very strange way!.
