Im on my clinical rotations rn and ill being doing micro in a few weeks and the most annoying thing is just the smell. Good thing ive already been offered a job at my site and will only be doing chem hemo urinalysis and coag

Hello! I am a junior going for my chemistry degree and was just introduced to the career of MLS! I actually just got a job as a tech assistant in a hospital core lab. They offer a program however I do not have all the needed biology classes. I know you did a video to get this job with a bio major but do you think with work experience and my chem degree I could receive a position or would i have to go through the program?

Im hoping you post an update. Even jf you are in a different field or job now or ascp advice ( i know i will be taking it at least twice im a bad test taker) or what you think about staff shortages or how internships went for you. Would really love to hear. Hope you are well(:

So as a bachelor degree I study bioinformatics. As a master I want to study infectious diseases and international medicine. After that I can be a clinical scientist right?

I miss other areas of the lab tbh. I loveeeee micro also, im in bloodbank and love it as well. Wasnt a fan of heme either, in school it wasn’t interesting but outta school your just under the microscope unfortunately

correct, outside of school heme is just under the microscope. I actually really liked heme in PA school just because most of the information was review. I would actually consider working in heme/onc as a PA. Hope all is well and are you still working in the lab?

I have a question. I am a little more than half way through for my bachelor's. However, because of family concerns, i was thinking of going for associates instead. I wanna know if associates level lab techs are getting hired? Or are they competing against bachelor's level?

They do get hired but the pay is less. You may have less responsibility or the same as an MLS. It just depends on the job.

Go straight for the bachelors. It is the same job but less pay.

I work as a CLS in California. They require a Bachelor’s degree. If you don’t have a BS, you would end up to be a Lab Assistant which pays less and you don’t get to report results like how a CLS could.

Try and find a community college or state college that has it!

Though it is great to start off as a technician (community/tech/trade school) Applied Science/Biology is a great starter degree. What you really need to do is look to see what classes are needed to get into the program you want to get into.

The CLS program I want to apply to has a “pre-health assessment” did you have to have your health assessed and what did it consist of? I’m worried I might not get accepted because I’m overweight.

You'll be fine. They can't not accept you because of your weight. You do need to be able to sit in a desk though and working in a lab is fast paced, you will be on your feet a good portion of the day.

They just want to make sure you have the proper vaccinations and are healthy and capable to work.

Which department works primarily alone?

It is very dependent on the laboratory. Typically, departments will not have you work alone unless you are in a very small lab or are short staffed.

Do you think that there is a benefit in getting a Masters's degree in CLS?

In all honesty, I don’t think it’s worth it. When you get a masters in CLS we pretty much make the same amount of money as someone with a bachelors degree. At least that’s what I find out from working at my clinical site. There was a guy there who did have his masters in CLS but apparently he was making the same amount as someone with a bachelors.

It could be different depending on the state but from my specific example I know it wasn’t worth it.

The same could be said for having an associates in this field. At my previous job someone with an associate was doing the same work as a man with a bachelors but we’re getting paid less money.
