Metal pipe Helical piers are now the standard for Alaska and Canada for foundation is you do want to avoid any contact with Wood and earth or concrete. Helical piers are not driven pipe, they are screw piles and when put in right! Takes all of 6 min per pier with no need to mess with soil. can not move. will not frost heave, and will outlast the materials of the building. (Alaska Helical pier) look it up..!!. I put them in all over Alaska, (two provinces in Canada now outlaw the use of sonatubes and concrete for home loans and inspections. they always heave and move) Helical piers wont move or fail..

I add extra treatment of a painted mixture of half burnt motor oil and half diesel to my posts that go in the ground. Then, paint on Roof and Foundation Coating( Fibered liquid asphalt coating) to the sides, not the very bottom, so that the post can properly drain. If I go 3 feet in the ground, I'll paint up 3'6". An even more intelligent way of treating your posts is some sort of huge barrel with the diesel/burnt motor oil in it and just put your posts in to soak. Then all you do is paint on the tar. For my fence project coming up, I'm going to use gravel with a tamper bar instead of using concrete. Overtime, your post will start to split open at the top from sun exposure, paint in the roof and foundation coating all over that top! This will mostly stop water from going down into your posts! I'll have a few inches of gravel at the very bottom, below the post, so that drainage is even better!
