Another good one Jay, I have a lifetime in the bush, I trapped, hunted, fished, had and seen many camps and tents with some great woodstoves, In all those years well over 50, never have I seen a stove like that. That is the cats ass. Don't be hard on yourself, you are doing great, as long as you are learning you are doing the right thing, Keep up the good work!

Don't sell yourself short Jay, everything is a learning experience, look how far you've come.

Jay when cutting down a tree with a axe try it this way two chops at a down angle then at base of the chops straight in it it will split out the pieces of wood you started with the downward strike. And repeat until the hole is half way through then reverse sides and chop about six inches above the other side and tree will fell where you want it to. The goal is to get as much of the tree chipped out without wearing yourself out. Hop this helps. Love the wood stove.

Great video Jay. I had to chuckle when you went after the trees with your axe. Maybe it's because I'm a touch older than you at 71, but if I had a good chainsaw close, which you did, that axe wouldn't see the light of day.🤠 Well done. I admire your commitment.

Always enjoy watching a tent video during morning coffee Jay, thanks for the content. I was surprised to see your gas burner fire on the first try. I use a long(ish) line from a 40lb tank with a low-pressure regulator, to feed a propane heater, and whenever I crack the propane valve open, it takes a good 60 or 70 seconds of holding the pilot open, to drain off the air & fill the line with propane, before the pilot lights off. As others have said, I think you'll need a way to get a bit of heat into your propane bottle, if you're out there when ambient temp gets low enough to liquefy propane (about -40, IIRC). As I watched you dig out the snow for the exterior propane line, it looked like you were removing snow that you had shoveled from your "step", I noticed exposed floor pallets on the left of the screen. Next time you're out after a heavy snowfall, you could consider shoveling a loose bank of snow around the base of the dwelling - it'll keep wind out, and snow is actually a decent insulator (lots of trapped air), might keep your floor a little warmer. Are you planning to T off of the big propane tank, to run a heater under the Yamaha? Have been thinking about your quandary with starting it in the cold, pondering inexpensive solutions. It looks like your new woodstove is stout enough to support & heat up a large rock; if you parked over a hole, pushed a hot rock under there, maybe tarped over the engine bay, that might trap enough heat for a long enough time period to get the engine warmer than -20? Not exactly sure how you'd go about moving a big hot rock from stove to hole, but I'm sure there's a number of ways. Oven mitts maybe. I've also never chopped down a tree with an axe, my inclination would be to cut a little higher, I think. It would allow me to swing at shallower angles, in both the downward and upward strokes. A very sharp edge on the axe is important, I think, too. You can always come back and claim the stump next time you're out there with a chainsaw. Or, y'know, just leave it to decompose. Speaking of saws, I see you got a Silky Bigboy 2000, pretty sweet eh? I'd almost be inclined to cut down a large tree with that, before an axe. It seems like it's only a matter of time before you'll be heading out with minimal gear, catching your food, making your water, making do with what Nature is providing you, sporting six months' worth of beard & writing haikus in the snow about the northern lights. Neat Stuff.

I absolutely love that wood stove! I am definitely adapting mine like that! On a side note: More than snow falls from trees, one should always look up and survey any dangers before cutting down any tree and also have a retreat path cleared. Two thumbs up buddy! This is how you get better, get out there and do it!

for takin down a tree you were going too low. go for right above your hip, that will give you the perfect swing and angle.

When dealing with dead standing trees, one should always keep a keen eye for widow makers.

Pro Tip: Jay, it's best to store that fire making mash in a metal bucket. Preferably with a lid. One errant spark and look-out.

Hey Jay, morning fellow bush rat. Just perking up a fresh pot of joe, and fixing some home cured and smoked bacon, hash browns, cackle berries and toast for the wife and I. While we watch your video. It's the first time the wife has seen one of your videos, she's giving you a thumbs up sir. Putting your Coleman on a diet of propane from a 20 pounder is going to be cheaper in the long run, over the little bottles Coleman sells. Wackin' trees down with an axe. That'll warm you up, even at -30. Chopping a tree down with an axe isn't any different than cutting it down with a chainsaw, other than bludgeoning the tree with an axe. The principal is still the same. A good alternative to an axe is a bow saw, it affords you a little more control. Another episode of "Fine Tent Dining with Jay" didn't disappoint. The burger and fries looked damn good, and probably tasted even better after a successful day. Funny thing is, the wife just asked if I wanted burgers and fries for supper tonight. your a man of few words, so most of time I just put on the closed captions.....kind of funny walking in snow said "applause" and getting the snow off tent was "music". I had to turn on the sound to hear the chewing and swallowing...that was also funny. Hey Jay I was thinking this morning as I watch your show ... I know in the past that your snow mobile has had some starting issues due to the extremely cold weather... maybe in the nicer weather you could build a little shed or garage or tree fort to park your snow mobile and get it out of the weather ..... I'm not sure how you could get heat to it .... maybe build it on the side that's closest to the wood burning stove and well use some kind of route plan to pass heat into the area where the sled will be parked ...... just a thought Brother..... I'm sure we will all enjoy what you come up with 😁😁😁🏆🏆🏆

When I did something like that with my tent, the lines got ice in them. You'll need to insulate the tank and hose. I was thinking of making a little box outside with a small solar/battery powered heater to keep the temp above freezing. Not sure how I'd do it, but I'll tinker around and get it to work.

Hey Jay - a safety tip - you should always connect the propane last, not first. Had that hose been defective you could have sprayed propane into your tent. Always best to have everything downstream already connected before "going live".

For drilling a hole in your structure to me was kinda a bad idea, for one is now the mice have easy access. But truthfully it was a good idea but I would've drilled threw in a higher part and ran it down between wall and tent. Zip ties are handy. But thanks for the video. Don’t poke a hole through the tent. Do it on the floor since you build it with wooden pallets and plumb it down below .

I am only missing a garage to shelter your snowmobile and it's battery might be a smart idea. with a little air vent (old stove pipe) letting air from your tent into the garage tent (closed container like structure) and faithfull old yeller is getting you home everytime! Remember the days when you were cutting all your wood with a handsaw? You've come a long way. I love your videos.

i used to make a fire in my wood stove by starting with birch bark, then a layer of dry twigs from the fir trees, then larger branches from the fir trees, then kindling, then small logs, then the big logs. I could get the whole thing going fantastically with just one quick flick of a lighter. Now I just use kindling and some lighter fluid. Not as bush-crafty, but it's fast and easy, and the lighter fluid is cheap. And more importantly, I don't need a whole bunch of crap around in my cabin to start a fire. So there.

Jay have you thought about talking about a project you want to tackle on video before you actually do it? Since you admit that you are “flying by the seat of your pants” it might be beneficial to get some various ideas before taking steps that cannot be reversed. I admire your “I can do this!” attitude. But let’s face it, you don’t need to reinvent the wheel if someone else has already been there and done that. I’m just sayin........

Love your videos, Jay! I’m sure you know this by now, but toss that wire grill brush in the trash! Those wires can fall off, tiny tiny, a lot of times you can see them, and they can get into your food and that’s very dangerous to swallow.

Jay, I have an artic oven and just had it on a camping trip near Fort Macpherson. It was -35 and my propane bottle wouldn't work outside. Had to keep it by the fire and then sleep with the bottle in the tent once my heater started working.

I love the learning experience of the videos, you have come so far in the past year. It's just a joy to see. Gawd that burger and fries made me hungry....:-)

That propane hose is a good idea. If it were me, I'd also run a hose from a small portable urinal well out into the woods. I don't like going out in the cold in the middle of the night.

Will be much easier to use that gas stove now with the big tank. Might want to cover the top of the tank and adapter once finally installed to keep water and ice from damaging the connections. Also, as a few others have noted, propane loses pressure at very low temperatures, so maybe bury the tank with a bunch of snow (wrap it in something waterproof first) so that it stays right around 0 C, where it should work just fine. The snow should insulate the tank from the colder air.

I've used chain saw chips and diesel. Works great, its cheaper than bar oil but it stinks a little more keep it outside with a lid on it and use a scoop which you already have. I use an ash shovel
