The main character of a story doesn't have to be the perfect person. People need to realise that Evan's just human, he makes mistakes and bad decisions. Nobody knows what they would do in his situation.
@georgiat-s5319
@georgiat-s5319 3 жыл бұрын
Right! He has to make mistakes and grow from them, that's a huge part of the plot and point of the story, a moral it leaves you with even. There's always going to be 'problematic' characters bc otherwise what would we tell stories about!

2. The ENTIRE cast of Grease (1978) was too old, but it was great seeing so much of the OBC in their respective roles as well. If the world can deal with a 30+YO Rizzo, we can deal with an older appearing Evan.

Ben himself, felt he was to old to the part, but everyone, including cast members begged him to please do it. And eventually he said yes. I absolutely love this movie & I agree, Ben was hand made for this roll. I cried 10mins into this movie. It broke my heart, & lifted it at the same time. Loneliness, Anxiety & Depression takes you do such a very dark place, that sometimes you make not so great or clear choices. I absolutely love this ml movie so much. Just take a second to think about it from Evan's point of view: a grieving mother comes to you and tells you that her son committed suicide, but that she knows that you were friends and that now, you're her one remaining connection to her son. Only you (and Jared) know that it wasn't true. Do you look that mother in the eyes and tell her that she has nothing left of her son? And keep in mind that you have incredibly crippling social anxiety, the kind that usually won't even let you TALK to people, much less rip away their only comfort in the world. Should he have told the truth? Yes. COULD he have told the truth? I honestly don't think so.

the problem is the entire "let's write an imaginary correspondence where we change Connor in the kind of person they would like"... I understand why he ended up in that mess, but he... kind... makes his bed... very enthustiastically from there...
@mathsalot8099

As a mom of 2 kids on the autism spectrum who struggle communicating and adjusting to social settings, this hits hard. In response to "but he lied about a guy's suicide..." Evan tried to speak up multiple times to multiple people, but they cut him off and didnt want to listen. If you struggle with communication, once you are shut down, it's nigh impossible to try again. I haven't seen the show, but it seems his agency is taken from him time and again by well meaning people who are pressuring him to be something he's not, but in turn he becomes a better person for it. Noone in this show seems to be a good person, but at least Evan seems to do something about it to grow personally and to help other people in their grief and confusion. Again, I'm just going off a 3 minute trailer and may be completely wrong.
@jeffquinz2118
@jeffquinz2118 3 жыл бұрын
That's definitely it. He's afraid of letting people down by being himself, so he goes along with whatever makes Connor's family happy. I won't talk anymore, cause I might spoil the whole thing, but yeah. You're in the right direction. :) Hope you experience the movie when it comes out.

@@rachaelkilpatrick9774 Yep, well meaning people doing their best to deal with one of the most tragic things in their lives. I didnt mean to imply that the other people were "the bad guys." Please, don't call Connor "a guy"... his story is already too sad, he as a person being deleted by the narrative in favour of a fake person more easy to love... I mean, don't matter if he was actually a beautiful human being stunted by his problems or the self-centered egoist his sister said he was, we'll never know that. He was his own person, that's sure, and I don't think to be rewritten is better than to be forgotten...

My biggest worry with this trailer is that they didn't showcase any of the comedy of the show. I understand why, they wanted it to be a more emotional feels-y trailer. But one of my favourite parts of the original show is that while it is really heavy and emotional, it also has a lot of great humour. And I hope they keep that when the movie does release.

@TheGirlInGeekGlasses
@TheGirlInGeekGlasses 3 жыл бұрын
I completely agree! When people say he "gets away with it", I'm always so confused. He doesn't get what he wants in the end (Zoe), and although he is civil with the Murphy family, they no longer allow him to be a part of their family unit like he was before, so there definitely are consequences to what he did. I've also seen that there are no consequences, but then how would they want it to end instead, the Murphys publicly state that the figurehead of this online campaign lied about the whole thing, essentially publicly cancelling a 16 year old boy who is severely suffering with his mental health? For me, the way it was written is far more clever than people give it credit for

Evan has really bad social anxiety and tries to deny it from the beginning, even though it might lead to a conflict, but Connor's family doesn't want to hear it. The thought that Connor had some sort of happiness is the only thing stopping them from blaming each other for his death. After that it gets out of control but the evolution of this lie keeps Evan from his intrusive thoughts. So, yes, it's messed up but I can't say Evan is a horrible person.

I should not be crying before I go to work. Yet, here I am crying my eyes out over a trailer....a trailer! I hate to see what I would be like while watching the movie. Time to stock up on tissue. As for the main character, yes he made a decision that was wrong (even though he tried to tell the truth in the beginning). However, his bad decision woke everyone up (they all have some sort of issue)...including himself. I can't wait to see the movie. Now, I must nurse my feelings before I go to work.

This musical is so moving. I loved it. I'm looking forward to the movie but I can't wait to see the musical again. If you live in an area where the Broadway touring company comes through do yourself a favor listen to the soundtrack and see the show. It's crazy to see people walk out of a theater after spending so much money and not knowing what the subject of the show is about. I'm hoping the movie doesn't ruin the experience and thought behind this beautiful musical.

Never even heard of Dear Evan Hansen until this video. Part of me wants to watch, about another part thinks it hits a little too close to home and I don't want to cry and feel vulnerable.

Sometimes theater just needs to hit you as hard as it can: 2008, last few months of high school my mom took me to a showing of "The Diary of Anne Frank" in Seattle's Intiman Theater, and while that story is already very tough, but the end of it, all the actors silently took of their shoes and lined them up on the stage as their characters were discovered and led off stage by the Nazis, and the entire theater was sobbing.
