I knew him very well. Unlike some celebrities Dennis was COOLER than I expected!! Every girl was in love with him even in 1977 when first we met. I am credited in the BBC documentary. I submitted a photo I took of him with Christine circa 1980. I met him in Detroit. I moved to CA and was a dear friend up until shortly before his passing. Those of us who knew him well are still not over it. Yes indeed he was a drag strip driver on the sly. Great content thus far.

History of the Harmony: The Harmony was built in Japan in 1950 by the Azuma Boat Company for George T. Folster, a New Englander whose ancestors had sailed the Pacific in the days of the great whaling ships. The craft was christened Watadori (Bird of Passage), and the theme set by the original name was reflected in the carving of a bird under the bowsprit, as well as in the hand-carved designs in the cabinetwork below decks. According to her blueprints, the craft was built from materials from all over the world: the wood includes teak from Burma, mahogany from the Philippines, and camphor wood from Formosa; the sails were imported from England; and the brass fittings were made in Scotland. The Harmony, with her Marconi rigging, was not built for racing, but still she is a fleet ship nonetheless. She was the first yacht ever to make a nonstop passage under canvas from Japan. This feat was accomplished during a perilous forty-seven-day voyage, across five thousand miles of open sea, in the summer of 1952. On this voyage, she covered an average of a hundred miles a day.... her best run was 158 miles for one day. Wilson himself had sailed her to Catalina, northern California, and the Baja peninsula of Mexico. The Harmony, was repossessed in 1980 and sold for debts in 1981. Dennis Wilson died in 1983. If it's still around it's possible that her owners have no idea of her history. There was a rumor of her being up sale in 2009 but I've heard of no confirmation on whether or not this was the same 1950s built craft or not. Great episode. Re 21:20, I don't think there's any way Carl always had Brian's back creatively. He shut down the 90s stuff Brian was trying to get The Beach Boys to do because he felt it wasn't commercial enough, and then out come Stars and Stripes.

Thank you and I take your point on Carl with the Don Was stuff although I think a lot of the obstacles were business related too. I know there are cases to be made for both brothers not being supportive at times - I guess Im speaking from a more general pov and I'm also guilty of exaggerating at times ;) thanks for engaging :))

I don’t care as much about post 80s tbh. But looking at Love You, Carl definitely had Brian’s back and I really believe that much-adored album by fans would never have happened if not for Carl

The fact never escaped me that he grew his hair longer than the Beatles in 1964. How did it escape his father, Murry's notice? He fined his boys for cussing---I figured long hair would have been a STEEPER fine!

Why oh why did their father or their record company allow the Beach Boys to be so involved with Manson?!
@sonjiapbooth8 ай бұрын
@Micheal-jo1sl Manson was around the peripheral of the band for not much longer than a year. He also knew Neil Young & many other celebrities of the time. It's unfortunate that because of Dennis's interest in girls & drugs, & the fact that Dennis, was, at that stage of his life, easily influenced, the press took a greater interest in Manson being linked to young, wild & attractive Dennis rather than other famous musicians - Dennis sold printed copy, & linked to the fascination with Manson, sold double the print run.

@@sonjiapbooth Plus Dennis was really into the Maharishi once he met him in December '67. He was the one that got the rest of the band into him (of course Mike and Al sticking with TM), leading to the debacle having the Maharishi tour with them in '68. Holy Man was the outcrop of his interest in so called spiritual people. In interviews during that period in '68 he would talk about the 17 girls he was living with, plus his "wizard". When it was discovered about Dennis' connection to Manson, it definitely sold copy.

RE: Little Bird. Stephen Kalinich has confirmed while the initial idea was Dennis's , Brian essentially re-wrote the whole track and made it as it is.

thank you :) I've always known that Brian had huge hand in finishing track - but didn't know of Mr. Kalinich's confirmation

I thought he was punched in the throat which contributed to his voice getting really bad.

40:39 from hearsay there was also the fight with Mike Loves brother. He was punched in the throat and that completely destroyed it.
@ms85965 ай бұрын
It wasn't hearsay. It was known and discussed at length in the mid to late 70s by a couple of the backup band and photographer I know. Stan Love also was arrested in the early 80s for him and Rocky Pamplin jumping Dennis and practically killing him. There is no love in any of the Loves.
