Yeah, it was the argument where Doe brings up her wearing a dress to peal the arousal of other people that Riley lost the debate here. You can't tell me that it is a violation of someone's consent for me to go out looking good to attract sexual desire from people and if I illicit that response that I am doing harm to them because i did it without their consent or the consent of those around them. I don't get why everyone seems focused on the thought-policing aspect of Riley's argument. She seems to be a virtue ethicist and one of the main tenets of this philosophical framework is that an action can still be morally condemnable even if it refers only to oneself and, as such, the logical extension of this is that certain actions are categorically wrong even if they do not refer to the empirical world. Sure, one could say that virtue ethics itself is a bad moral framework, something i agree, but i don't understand the apparent idea that she just said the most unheard of thing ever. Plus lots of philosophical arguments go against moral intuitions and if you force some examples a bit you can get intuitions on the side of any of the major ethical frameworks.

It's honestly kind of hypocritical for Riley to be upset about the morally loaded language. She was definitely doing it too when she kept saying, _*"in front of children"* with so much emphasis. She also was trying to use the term "sex act" in a really weird way. @@mikecurry6847 there's a huge difference between bringing up extreme hypotheticals and bringing up your own personal trauma. The prior is actually an important method of testing arguments in philosophy and the latter, while potentially having the same value as the former, is also a pretty obvious tactic to get an optics win. It makes disagreement with the person into a major ethical and interpersonal wrong because of how they'll feel bad if you don't agree with them.

@@Robert21211 i agree rgr’s definition fails and I agree someone can bring up their traumatic past without it being a problem. However when Doe tried they were way too emotionally entwined with it still. @@harryb12993 Optically, I don't think this looks bad for Doe at all. Her bringing up her traumatic past made complete sense in context with the convo because she was essentially telling RGR that her definitions were harming people who actually experience trauma; and when you make an accusation like that pointing to yourself as one of the victims of your opponents argument is always gonna stick better. Its like when Kamala had that primo soundbite "That little girl was me" slam on Biden during the primaries. Its corny, but it plays.
@Vynjira-chan
@Vynjira-chan 2 жыл бұрын
@@harryb12993 I am a CSA survivor, and it was really hard to hear Doe's experiences in graphic detail. That having been said, the optics in context of the entire debate only made RGR look worse.. and forced RGR to bite the bullet on how bad her argument was. Doe leaving after RGR tried to defend how bad her argument actually was.. did not seem like giving RGR the win.. it was more like a mic drop. You now have RGR admitting outright that in her system, what someone is wearing or not wearing (bare feet) is a sexual act that in some way contributes to pedophilia, but the act of deciding which child to buy for sex.. is not.. because she has all her priorities fucked up. If you feel that Doe was being emotionally manipulative by saying "buy my holes", I mean I can't change how you feel about it.. I would say tho, that the emphasis on that was made after RGR really tried to downplay it so her argument wasn't so absurd.

I think doe throwing out its CSA experience was perfectly relevant. Because the biggest problem with Rileys arguement is that she uses words and terms in such a vague way as too make them useless in any real setting. That will lead to extreme real world harm because it muddys the waters. In the same way that Qanon bull leads to MORE harm to kids then preventing harm. Riley is post hoc rationalizing her entire moral system. She's basically saying "these are the outcomes I want" and then when someone says they disagree and presents an alternative system, her only way of fighting that is to say "but your system could be used to justify x", which is not a real argument against x. The correct response to someone saying this is "yes, if it can be justified, then it's not wrong." Unfortunately this response is extremely susceptible to grandstanding, depending on how optically bad "x" thing is, because it's working from a circular position of the thing being wrong to begin with. Either knowingly or unknowingly, she uses this susceptibility to try to eke out an optical win, doing things like acting flabbergasted, raising her voice, and shouting things like "wow!" Unfortunately this isn't a real argument. It's essentially the equivalent of someone who hates gay people saying "yeah but if I accept your moral system, I'd have to accept gay people, and that's gross, so therefore it can't be right." Fundamentally there is no difference between the validity of those two positions. The only deciding factor on correctness is who happens to be listening, since it relies entirely on optics and grandstanding. Pretty much any argument that has to resort to "think of the children!" is almost always guilty of this. It's just a tactic to try to rally soccer moms to your side, and pull on their emotional heartstrings, when you know an argument holds no real water logically.
@Nikifuj908
@Nikifuj908 2 жыл бұрын
I agree that Riley is wrong, but disagree with your framing of her wrongness. It is perfectly OK, in my opinion, to design moral systems so that they pass certain "sanity tests". One basic sanity test: if your moral system can justify serial killing, it needs to be fixed. Riley's real problem is that her "sanity tests" are just insane. We come up with formal systems by generalizing patterns we see in everyday life. Start with inductive reasoning, then confirm by derivation from a deductive system. If you create a mathematical or scientific theory that does not comport with reality, it may be interesting to study in an ivory tower, but it won't be useful for everyday humans.

Unsurprisingly, all moral systems were developed by human beings and human beings have desires and intentions. Climaxing on the other hand is almost always obscene and disruptive, even if it's hidden. As far as children are involved in all of this, I think Doe was correct, if somebody isn't INTENTIONALLY going around children in public or child occupied spaces then it's not predatory. @@mannyoftheeast3318 There's a reasonable argument to be had on the subject, almost unbelievable how completely binary Riley made the discussion. Recently had two gay men making out more aggressively than I've ever seen a straight couple too so publicly during the day in my apartment lobby and personally I think there's a question of whether or not this is acceptable behaviour. Even if legally this becomes a grey area I'd rather someone outright have their cock out than having aggressively sexual gay makeout sessions in front of me. Especially in terms of behaviour of housemates having sexual interactions that impose on others in the house worth consent its something a lot of people deal with and there isn't a huge amount of conversation around it when people are trying their hardest to be as sexually liberal as possible.

I was really hopeful for RGR as a streamer because I like a lot of her takes, but now I wonder how she's actually reaching her conclusions. I could never quite put my finger on the issue in some of her other debates, but this is a perfect example of post hoc rationalization. She seems to identify things that she intuitively thinks are either good or bad and then tries to build an argument around it. She could literally just say, "I don't like the idea of this because some of the potential outcomes are uncomfortable for me to think about." You don't have to rationalize everything (though I prefer to do so). Some things are just gonna make you irrationally uncomfortable or agitated. It seems to be a part of being human. Doe did really well at first and then, overall, this devolved into a fucking dumpster fire. Disappointing on both fronts.

Yep! I could be wrong of coarse, but it seems as though Riley may have personal dislike of foot fetishes and such, but isn't comfortable being open about that. Frankly, while I still disagree with her, I don't think I'd an issue if she was more straight forward and just came clean about not being into that kind of thing

I think Doe kept a its cool pretty well considering they were having a conversation about whether or not it justified pedophilia and it is literally a CSA victim. Even toward the very end, it was being polite and conciliatory toward RGR, saying “I don’t understand, I’m so sorry,” only giving up once Riley just went fully off the deep end.

There's a simple way to shut this down - if it's violating someone's consent to think about them whilst masturbating, is it also violating their consent to think about them? Is it violating their consent to imagine them doing something non-sexual? after all, they didn't consent to being visualised in any capacity, right? This is such an obvious virtue-signal from RGR, the practicality of their arguments is non-existent.

According to Riley‘s logic, if you like feeling and looking sexy in public, you better ask everyone in public beforehand if you have their consent to invoke desire in them first. Otherwise, you are violating their consent. This whole line of logic is so ridiculous.

As a Vaush and Destiny fan, I was interested in hearing of Destiny's perspective but I was ultimately disappointed for many reasons. If you want to bring back the lefties in or whatever, this might be a good perspective to listen to. And, watch BookSmarts, cough, cough. There's a lot of particularly bad failings in RGR's logic that Destiny fails to point out when they're so easily noticeable. I acknowledge that Destiny is friends with RGR and has bias towards her, but around the 1:11:00 timestamp, where RGR says that Doe hasn't properly showed its (Doe's) argument, after repeating it over and over again is incredible. When Doe argued that RGR was trying to get it to say something where it could be clipped, I felt like that could've been a good moment for Destiny to come in and say, "I've experienced this shit before, (example.)" Where he could've used Vaush and Kyle Rittenhouse, or the many other examples where he's been clipped out of context, to relate to Doe's frustrations during the debate. When RGR corners you into saying a Yes or No answer and remove all context, as a viewer, that does come off as her trying to clip it out of context. I'd also disagree with Destiny's implication that RGR did not call Doe a pd00ph11e because she didn't explicitly mention it. It's not a good look, especially when I've seen RGR's girlfriend's tweet, which implied it much more heavily. I know it's not mentioned in the debate, but considering the context of this starting on Twitter. I think it'd be good, if Destiny, attempting to be responsible, would've clarified that mention more of the twitter beef. Around timestamp 1:37:00, I also didn't appreciate Destiny's comment about Doe's personal story; although Nuclear, still coincided with the debate and properly showed Riley's moral failings if she considers someone buying Doe as just an action of purchasing power rather than an inherent sexual desire to fuck. I also believe editing it out, even if the editor's note has a disclaimer that it was cut out for being graphic, it's important to the crux of the debate and removing it and RGR's reaction to it. Like, it feeeeeels like you're just trying to remove sympathy from being given to Doe. That's the mind of a Destiny/Vaush fan. I hope it was useful and springs up important discussions and whatever.

I legitimately do not understand why the pedophille calling is so relevant. It seems to be the go too ironic internet insult now that slurs are no longer commonplace so the reaction seems a bit exagerated. The real problem with this discussion is that while it was higly philosophical it seems people were trying to morally load language in it to a high degree(and Riley did this often with the "justifying sex in front of children" too), which is very much something one ought not do in this types of conversations, as often times people make concessions in this kinds of talks that are intuitionally very extreme. As for Doe's personal story it seemed incredibly irrelavant and just an emotional appeal and further diluted the "philosophical" conversation that it seemed like Riley was trying to have(But not doing a good job at making that clear) and i think her response was justified there as far as i can tell.
