I rarely, if ever comment on videos. Of all the videos I watch on dog training. Larry, I respect you as one of the best. It's because, you show the ugly. All of us trainers, wish it was all lollipops and rainbows. Thanks for being real and showing that we all make mistakes. It's just part of the game.

THANK YOU!!! Love the way you do heel so simply and easy! Everything else I've watched seemed so difficult in other videos. Also so glad to watch the end where mistakes are made and your follow threw! Thanks so much! I want my dogs to be bomb proof too!

Larry! We have a female German Shepherd. Just got her E-collar in today. My husband is deployed. Therefore, it is just myself (and the kids) working with her. We came here to find resources and make sure we're using the collar correctly. I loved that you kept in the part where Halo doesn't stay in his place and let us see the correction you gave him. It's hard to see the dogs being perfect the entire time because it doesn't show me what to do when she doesn't respond to a command. So, thank you. Thank you for the time you take to make these videos as well! It's helping us..... BIG TIME!

After watching this vid I subscribed! Letting us see the good bad and ugly makes me realize I’m not doing things as terrible as I thought. It’s my consistency. I’ve been giving up to fast. Thanks bro

Yes Larry. Love your videos from all the way here in Australia. I have a GSP who is high energy and love the way you work with the dogs personality without trying to change it. Love love love the bit where you needed to do the correction with Halo. Put more of this in your vids so we can see what you do when they don't do what they're supposed to!!

I absolutely love your videos I started watching them about 2 months ago. I've been trying to implement one of the videos that you talked about which leg to lead off of so that they know to follow you or not. While watching Halo I was wondering if he kept coming off of his place command because of the leg you were leading with when you walk away from him.

Won't throwing a bunch of food on the ground make it difficult later on for food refusal and cause problems with the dog picking up random food off the ground which could possibly be dangerous to him?
@Sixstringhiggs5 жыл бұрын
Craig Manning Larry uses a “leave it” command that works even when he puts food the dog can eat on the ground.

I've seen pretty much all you videos and I like them and I appreciate you sharing the knowledge, this is the only video where I don't like what you do at some point, the punishment at 8:30, I'll tell you why, I think it was more an unfair punishment than a correction, if the dog has not reached fluency I think it is not fair to correct him, it's on you more than it is on him, I am not against corrections verbal or physical, but like I said on this circumstance I think was an unfair punishment not a correction to the point that he tugged his tail between his legs, his hears went back, he crouched and peed out of fear, I saw 8 times he broke the place command obviously for the food before you punished him, the food would be a distraction, using a distraction of course it is part of the training but it is way ahead in this case(he can not be fluent if 8 out 8 times he brakes the command), we all now the phases, learning(acquisition), training(fluency), generalization, distraction, correction, maintenance, so if he is not fluent and has not yet generalize it(you command him 8 times and the 8 times broke out of it), it was more compulsive training(old school), and has not had some proofing, to correct him and even worse to punish him is unfair. I am not trying to bash you or denigrate your work at all, just trying to point out what I saw from a pedagogical point of view, and hopefully you can see it too and correct your own mistake and not take it on the dogs when is it on you. I'm a professor, I studied all the pedagogy, from Pavlov, B.F. Skinner, Bloomfield, to any other, you name them, I apply all methods and techniques to humans as well as animals, it is a wonderful field. Maybe was only to show the training, or because you are being recorded so you didn't pay the right attention, or the nature of the circumstance, I don't want to think that it is common and that is the way of handing the mistakes of the dogs.

konukuauleki i agree and I love and respect Larry. In this case we can help each other. I saw the frustration inside Larry because i have been there on and off tape in front of clients and alone. I too show my clients the messy ugly parts. Many of my clients have told me that that’s what they respect and like about me is that I show that I too make mistakes and that my dogs make mistakes and often my dogs mistakes are also my mistakes. I love Larry I respect him immensely. I love that our industry is coming to more balance and I believe that Larry is a big part of that shift because he puts himself out there when he is attacked and criticized by those who are naïve young And do not see things his way. I get it I understand it and I’ve been there. Larry called himself out he saw that he missed the dog Peed on the place and that is why he was having a hard time staying and perhaps there was a little bit ego in there that popped up because you were being recorded and live. I was a commercial on air radio personality for 17 years being live is a different energy. And Larry doesn’t go back and edit. there was an obvious frustration and you ended it. the truth is I do agree that the reason why the dog was confused is perhaps he was not ready...when I hear anybody repeating commands over and over again that means the dogs confused. End of story there are other ways to correct it but number one is not putting the dog in a position because they’re not yet ready to perform. I watch your videos I see how amazing your dogs are your very high I drive dogs. I get the challenge ...i also love your passion and sometimes when my dogs fail i get so angry and i breath. Impulse control works both ways. my biggest question still is the marker word I call it an indicator, your release which I called an off switch although in this video you did not really use any of your off switches or release cue. I see the dogs breaking position when you mark and give them reinforcement how does that affect their ability to maintain position until released?
@konukuauleki5 жыл бұрын
@@majimeansmagic I agree 100%...thanks for the interaction.

I remember Larry saying in one of his videos that they Marker word is a release word in that sense. Marking that they have done it right and then continuing. Just like the clicker you mark what the dog did at that moment and then to get the reward he is released automatically with that marker. That’s how i understood it. And here you can see his frustration of course but he admitted it was his fault for not seeing the pee. I’m sure if he had had him in a down he wouldn’t have broken it that quick all the time or even better if he had rewarded him right away as he had always done before and the dog was probably used to it then while he was explaining really long for us, all this wouldn’t have happened. But this is reality and things like this happen to us and it is good to see that it also happens to Larry. Makes him human and that’s why i honestly love his channel and videos so much. He is showing everything even if he makes mistakes. He could have easily edited this part out. Kudos, Larry!

You "NEVER" have to hurt a dog during training, you (the trainer) just need to work harder and figure out what you're doing wrong. Praise, love and patience is the key.
