The Federation failed to take a larger view. Just because they had made peace with the Klingons and had contained both the Romulans and the Cardassians, the Federation thought it could handle anything the rest of the galaxy had in store. Q was rightly derisive of this attitude, but I also can't fault the Federation for not wanting to be militaristic. The argument must also be made that a more militaristic Starfleet would probably have been in violation of the Khitomer Accords, so they may not have had a choice in their disposition.

The change might be permanent. They *know* that there are threats out there. _Voyager_ came back with a lot of information about conditions out in the Delta Quadrant, and they know that some very _not nice Empires_ exist that would be in conflict with the Federation if geography allowed. And they also know that geography can change suddenly, as with the Dominion, or technology can make geography irrelevant as with the Borg and transwarp. Slipstream technology is the big worry though, Voyager proved its not a big upgrade beyond the ability of other powers, the only reason Voyager had issues was the ship had to be built from the _ground up to be streamlined for slipstream space,_ not retrofitted. Any of the not nice Empires could get their hands on it, besides, Starfleet being Starfleet will soon build such ships from the ground up and stir up trouble, and they know that they will find it and may feel it's their moral duty to go out and liberate oppressed species ect. They have a rogue's gallery of possible threats that could arrive without warning and they won't be caught off guard again. It's a bit like a victim of a traumatic crime becoming obsessed with self defense as a lifestyle choice, even elderly they will still be practicing martial arts and maybe shooting [depending on country… *_cough cough_* U.S.]. Besides, the Federation wil absorb the Klingons in a generation or so, which will definitely add to militarism. And the Cardassians will add a much needed cynicism, as may expat Ferengi.

I have a hard time with attributing this narrative to TNG. I don't think it was ever intended that way -- it's a product of the handoff from Gene Roddenberry to Rick Berman, who had different and conflicting ideas of what Star Trek was. There was also a change in television series design, from episode-of-the-week format to long story arcs. TNG (and TOS) was never designed with that in mind. For example, consider (as you've mentioned in other videos) the incompetent admiralty of TNG: In Roddenberry's Star Trek, there's a utopian idea of what humanity can be. Picard is the enlightened leader who possesses (or achieves) moral clarity. So when an admiral gets involved for an episode, it doesn't make sense to bring in someone competent and good. What would be the point, from a writing perspective? No, we're meant to see that in utopia, authoritarianism is resisted. We're meant to see the friction created by bad judgment. Therefore, every admiral we ever see is bad. But we're never meant to think that it's generally so. Likewise, regarding the decreasing militarization of Star Fleet, the whole point of TNG was that most problems could be resolved peacefully. That was, in fact, Gene Roddenberry's philosophy -- whether one agrees with it or not. Militarism was a failure to discover the peaceful resolution, which would present itself to any enlightened person. No conflict, therefore, could ever be prolonged or pronounced when at least one of the civilizations was enlightened. This was different from Rick Berman's philosophy, which was much more of a Pax Americana (Pax... Federation?) approach to international politics. The Borg were a narrative device at the time. They were nerf'd for Voyager, but their reason-for-being in TNG was as a technologically undefeatable foe who could only be held at bay by the enlightened human spirit. When perceiving a larger universe through the various series, IMO, one has to recognize that what one sees in TOS and TNG aren't oriented towards that larger universe in a story-telling sense. Universe-related inferences from those shows is more speculative than is obvious.
@LoreReloaded
@LoreReloaded 5 жыл бұрын
Well, the way that I look at various series is that I treat the universe as its been said it should be treated.. as face value on screen. I have no allusion that any of this was some grand attempt to bring things together. The series do contradict eachother after all in some instances. That Said, I attempt to bring cohesion and treat the universe as if it had such.
@BlackCloudBoss
@BlackCloudBoss 5 жыл бұрын
I like your post and you're the first one I have seen other than me that saw the pax americana origins of the federation. I would add that, i'd like to think smart people rely on facts, and the data would show the level of defense the Federation would need so they would be able to act accordingly. I think they can hold onto their values while operating off of the facts and data without losing themselves. I feel like a lot of people watch Star Trek can't wait to lose themselves, their humanity at the drop of dime. That's why post apocalyptic fiction is so popular these days.

@shaunhumphreys6714 4 жыл бұрын
long story lines are superior. and the dominion war is the greatest thing weve seen on star trek, unrivalled in epicness. the idea everything can always be resolved peacefully is flawed. and it forgets that the federation had no peace with the klingons or the romulan star empire. on the contrary in deep space nine, klingons are our allies, and we've got more races in starfleet than before. previous star trek had too much of a preachey tone. it was about time we had a military conflict. DS nine had greater character arcs and character development., it had two long seven season story arcs-the dominion war, and the story of the Bajor prophets and the wormhole, centred on captain sisko. it manages to deal with the most epic war brought to the screen ever, and a religious storyline. and it has plenty of light hearted stories centred on the ordinary daily life on the space station, or the gold pressed latinum ferengi world. we dwelve deeper and in more detail into many different races-the ferengis, the bajorans, the cardassians, the changelings, the trills. deep space nine does this a hundred times more deep than any other star trek. the result, we care about these character far more than in next generation, star trek original series or voyager. im not listing the other star trek because its just shitty prequels or jj abrams reboots, none of which i count as star trek.

Cool new intro. I have to wonder if the spouts of militarization then move to exploratory peacetime is just a constant cycle. In Enterprise, Capt. Archer requests for military backup while beefing up the NX01 for a fight with the Xindi being the earliest example. It seems Starfleet always revert back to their pacifistic ways after cooling down post war till the next enemy appears to take an astounding number of lives to break that mentality. Which brings up to my question; how long till Starfleet post Dominion war is demilitarized?
@occultatumquaestio5226
@occultatumquaestio5226 5 жыл бұрын
For what Alpha Cannon tells us, we do not know yet. In multiple Beta Cannon sources Starfleet does the opposite and instead becomes MORE militarized. It does not ever go over kill and still in times of peace focus primarily on Science and Exploration but at least for the next few centuries as seen with Enterprises F and J, as well as the 29th century ships does not ever go to being as pacifistic as it was in TNG.
@HeadlessChickenTO
@HeadlessChickenTO 5 жыл бұрын
@@occultatumquaestio5226 That's quite possible. Then again, how many times did Starfleet beef up their military spending within a couple hundred years. Without knowing what has happened in the history between those ships, it's hard to conclude either hypothesis. But based on that info, I would theorize that Starfleet is at least able to mobilize and militarize faster and/or easier thanks to past experiences. Their tendancy to demilitarize quickly in peacetime is pretty consistent and old habits die hard.

I especially appreciate your mention of older starships being used to fight against the borg cube at Wolf 359, which is of course a bad idea, just so the writers could dramatize the role Riker and the Enterprise D would play by having "Lokutus" put them to sleep. I think your reflections on the history of starfleet (Romulans, Klingons, Cardassians, etc.) across the relative time frames of each series is really impressive.

In hindsight, one can see what Q was actually trying to do. The Federation was about to walk smack into galactic powers that were incredibly hostile AND incredibly advanced. The Borg and the Dominion each had, individually, the power to destroy the Federation. Let alone both together. To say nothing of other powers that we may not yet even know about. The Federation had become incredibly complacent. Like you said, their defensive capabilities had slacked. Compared to the overall technological progression of the Federation defensive capabilities appear to have stagnated. The only notable defensive improvements that had come around since the beginning of the "Golden Age" were in shields, and that was likely due to shields' usefulness in exploring in dangerous conditions. Yet at the same time the other regional powers had been improving their weapons technology considerably. It wouldn't be until Wolf 359 that Starfleet would once again begin advancing weapons technology, and it proves just how much they had been stagnating that just a few years after that battle you had quite serious improvements in their weapons; quantum torpedoes, pule phasers, tricobalt devices, etc. Imagine if they had been advancing defensive technologies that whole time; even the Borg may have had issue with a much more capable Starfleet. Heck we see that roughly a decade later when the Borg invade again and Starfleet manages to kick the crap out of the cube. The first cube made it to Earth more-or-less undamaged. The one a decade later had suffered extensive damage AND was still contending with a Starfleet task force that it hadn't managed to wipe out or shake off. If Q hadn't intruded when he did, then Starfleet and the Federation in general would have been freaking blindsided by both of these threats.

@@BlazingOwnager Have to agree. It's why DS9 is arguably better than TNG imho. It paints a little more realistic aspect of life in that universe. Regardless, Star Fleet has always been a military organization, hence the military ranks and high firepower on those ships. This was reflected by our own situation, when it was a time when the U.S. military was changing it's appearance into a kinder, gentler military. One that used ships and equipment for relief effort (I served in the U.S. Navy during the 90's, so I could see these changes firsthand). Of course all of that was just a facade, underneath it all was still a potent organization capable of inflicting massive pain on enemies. Same goes with Star Fleet.

Although I think the Ambassador class (battle cruiser) was an interim design parked between Excelcior (heavy cruiser) and Galaxy (dreadnought). E.g. Size of ships usually reflect technological advancements over time as star fleet vessels were designed for about 50-100 of life on the platform. Miranda moves from a cruiser to a destroyer classification during service life.

@Lore You know, I am wondering, have you considered doing a BSG Colonial-Cylon War series. The same concepts that you lay out about Starfleet and the Federation could be applied to the 12 Colonies of Kobol and the post Cylon War era of Caprica.
@Lennis01
@Lennis01 5 жыл бұрын
There's not a whole lot of alpha canon from which such a series would be based. The Caprica series was pretty short-lived (sadly), and all we know about the first Cylon War comes from flashbacks, a made-for-TV movie (Blood and Chrome), and a PC game that would fall into beta-canon territory. Lore rarely delves into beta-canon for analysis. Speaking for myself, It's hard to compare the Colonials with the Federation. The Colonials are a deeply dysfunctional bunch with a long history of infighting. The creation of the Cylons was partly done out of a desire to preserve the existing social order and deter any threats to the more prosperous colonies. They were fighting machines. If memory serves, it wasn't until later that the Cylons became ubiquitous and were used for basic labor rather than just as shock troops. The hubris of the Colonials came from the belief that no AI could be truly sentient, a mistake that the more enlightened Federation didn't make thanks to passionate arguments from men like Jean-Luc Picard. This was the direct cause of the first Cylon War, and the original sin that led to the Colonials' destruction decades later. Pacifism wasn't the issue behind their demise. More like fatigue. They were tired of the endless vigilance the armistice that ended the first war required, made a mistake by re-networking their ships, then got burned. This doesn't get into the business of the Final Five, or the ancient Cylons of Old Earth, or any of the mythology that was explained about as well as Forrest Gump reciting Shakespeare. (Face it, the producers were just making things up as they went and sacrificed credible world-building for shock drama. "I'm a Cylon? WTF?!") I prefer to focus on the original premise for the 2004 series.
@time391
@time391 5 жыл бұрын
@@Lennis01 Good points, but the Blood and Chrome TV movie is Alpha Canon and does give us a good view of the war. Post War Caprica based on BSG series' references, seem like an idealized Democratic state, like the Modern US or Star Trek's Federation. Yes, in Star Trek the Borg nearly destroyed the Federation after Wolf 359, only for starfleet to get really lucky Same is true with the 12 Colonies of Kobol, they barely got their armistice from Cylon-Humans. The difference is that in Battlestar Galactica the One "True God"doesn't like to interfere in corporeal affairs, but in Star Trek the Prophets are "Okay, fine Sisko-Jesus, you get your miracle" and stop a massive fleet of Dominion ships. Be honest, the Federation is no less Corrupt or no less internally divided as Colonials, it's just hidden better beneath utopian exterior. By the time of the Dominion War, they were basically as whipped as the Colonials, whose technology couldn't stop the invaders.
@Lennis01
@Lennis01 5 жыл бұрын
@@time391 As I remember it, the "One God" of BSG was always interfering, albeit in usually subtle ways. "She" was influencing Baltar through visions right from the start, and the results were always tragic and led the Colonials in the direction God wanted them to go. The Colonials basically lost their entire civilization due to God's machinations, their own frequent stupidity notwithstanding, and they were left on a pristine but technologically barren world, doomed to forget everything they were and what they had accomplished as a space-faring culture. It was really quite sad. I disagree with your assessment of the Colonials and the Federation being the same, as their general attitudes towards life differed greatly. The Federation had achieved a post-scarcity society, so they didn't have to deal with the baser instincts of greed that often ensnared the Colonials. The Colonials would never have seen Data or The Doctor as anything but property or assets. The Federation (with some prodding) acknowledged them as sentient beings. The idealism of the Colonials never went beyond their own needs. Federation citizens were encouraged to expand their thinking. So the Colonials entered a decadent stagnation, while the Federation was entering an era of limitless potential. Remember that the Colonials were hamstrung by the armistice with the Cylons, while the Federation had contained or allied with their historical enemies and were free to expand. That the Federation would lose some of their idealism when pushed to extremes doesn't negate what they had achieved. Most importantly, the Federation survived its trials and learned from them. The Colonials were wiped out.
@time391
@time391 5 жыл бұрын
@@Lennis01 Actually, that's not completely True about the Federations being Post-Scarcity and Open society. In most installments and especially Deep Space Nine, you can clearly see that beyond the Core Worlds of the Federations, outlying colonies and territories were growing food, having to barter with alien cultures for equipment/tech, and normal things you might observe from modern civilizations. Like the Colonials with "Caprica" as their pristine capital world, the Federations's Core World of "Earth" was just flawed. It received numerous economic, technological, and social inputs from outlying worlds. People were living a really good standard of living on Earth, but beyond Earth as Sisko pointed out "Not all the Problems have been solved". I also would point out that despite Data and Androids in particular gaining rights in limited fashion, there was still very active prejudices to artificial lifeforms. Data's daughter Lal was going to be taken away from him, if you recall by Starfleet under the principle that they had ownership of her. Data would challenge this, but before it was ruled, Lal had a programming issue in a convenient plot twist to avoid the ethics. Let's go even to the Doctor and the rights of Holographic lifeforms, they were treated like second class citizens as well, because they were programmed to serve. When they rebelled, Starfleet would either find ways of turning them off or placate them. The Voyager EMH had to argue for his rights in order to be treated as an equal, which he won on a limited scope. Does that sound like an enlighten society? Not really, it sounds like a society that is still trying to define itself. They're no better than the Battlestar Colonials, when it comes to these things. The key difference though comes from the interaction with Omnipotent beings. Colonials were not treated with gentle hands and snark remarks like Q or the Prophets would offer. They were pushed to the point of extermination for some grand plan. If God had intervened, turned off the Cylons before they could finish their invasion of the 12 colonies and given them a chance, you'd get the same scenario as the Dominion War's final outcome as the Prophets interceded in Sisko's favor and stopped the Dominion Armada from coming, along with any other reinforcements. .

So in canon Axanar's Ares, and whatever they are cooking were first (around 2250), Mirandas later (2260), and even that they stayed in Service in 2370 first Defiants were rolled out. R&D started 5-10 years earlier. If we count STD as Alpha, (as capt. Garth explained it is clearly in another timeline), then Discovery with Spore Drive (Tardigrades, blue bears-like Creatures that affected appropriately can send you faster than light in space, and if I recall correctly also to alternative timelines, past, future etc. that were taken from a game, lawsuit is on it's way) is a specialist ship, not exactly intended for Combat. Though ENT shown us that reasonable people (like Archer) want to be armed when they "explore", you might not find exactly what you were looking on. If you need to defend yourself it is good to be at least formidable fighter. Every bridge crew of ENT understood this.

From the time of Captain Archer, who just wanted to be an explorer but quickly realized that most species they encountered were hostile and territorial. Therefore star fleet needed strong defences and needed to become a strong military force if they wanted to go exploring. Archer got his ass kicked several times before he started to understand this concept. This is why the Vulcans said they weren’t ready. Archer naively kept telling aliens where to find earth which was defenceless at the time. The further out star fleet explored the more they needed to improve their defences. All through TNG and DS9 the admiralty were nothing more than diplomats and bureaucrats which made star fleet a soft target, then when it came time for the Dominion War they had very few military strategists and planners. Therefore the Federation took heavy losses and almost lost the war.

The original intention of Gene Roddenberry was exploration on the Five Year Mission concept, where the Galaxy Class ships went so far out into unexplored space that they wouldn't get home in five years. So naturally, they'd want to bring along family and other civilians. It seems that since you're out that far you won't be involved in any war back at home. In a perfect universe that would be fine. Earth is essentially a starship. We don't just orbit our star, the whole star system is on a journey through new parts of space. We're not traveling on the same path year after year covering the same area of space. So are we supposed to drop off all the civilians on a safe world?

The Galaxy Class was designed to be a long range explorer but its facilities were so comfortable all the diplomats kept requisitioning their use and it was so well armed and fast that it was getting into way more scrapes than intended. The biggest question the Federation has to ask itself is what level of preparedness is necessary and how much of their values that preparedness would cost. Starfleet is perhaps too soft but if it hardens itself it runs the risk of becoming detached from the very values it holds dear.
