The Mental Health Controversy Over Donald Trump that's Dividing the Country--and How to Fix it

I'm viewing this 6 years later and after listening to Dr. Bandy X Lee on the social disorders which are manifesting even more since the Trump presidency and would love to see the both of you revisit this topic today. I am heartened that there are still people who aren't buying into the cognitive dissonance and actually speaking out on the mental health aspects of all this. I for one feel like I'm in a perpetual state of grief and sadness over the division, hatred and violence we're suffering today. 😥

I have a mother, brother, and an uncle that would be considered NPD and Malignant NPD. When I finally got a good view of Trump outside of his tv show and in political life. It became clear to me that he was most like my uncle who is an extreme NPD with strong psychopathic qualities. But unfortunately, if people have no experience with NPDs in their intimate circle it just sounds like some quaint adjective.

Yes, I wonder if Craig would still be hesitant about diagnosing Trump now ? His handling (or lack of) of the pandemic has cost many more American people their lives than was necessary. Trump hardly mentions the pandemic in his appearances - he is in denial about it because it conflicts with his vision of where America should be. Sadly for Americans they have a malignant narcissist as their president at the worse time they could have one. Also what I find very disturbing is that Trumps support does not seem to be falling dramatically. Even though die hard Republicans must realise that Trumps attitude towards the pandemic is going to cost many more thousands of American people their lives, they still seem determined to have him re-elected

Exactly the same, only with more evidence of his NPD? Experts and everyone who's familiar with them recognized him as a pwNPD before he was even elected. It was so obvious, especially where there was already hundreds of hours of his behavior and statements on video for the public, and countless statements for magazines, papers, etc.

Really good discussion. Very articulate explanation of complex ideas, made easy-to-understand. I've been studying/reading more on these topics and it really makes you really wonder about the world at large, how global populations of people behave, etc. let alone individuals we all come in contact with. Is it possible for an entire political party to become "narcissistic," or even an entire country? A lot of great info here. The hot potato example is a really good one. When I think about people who do that, I think about terms I'll call the big "D's": defend, deflect, deny, dismiss, diminish, even demean. It's amazing how much more you notice these things, or tendencies in ourselves if we act/speak too quickly. By the way, loved your book.

5 years later, this is still a good discussion but we’ve moved down the road and this narcissist is even more extreme than ever. It’s scarier since he has not been held accountable. Now there’s the issue of what happens to our democracy should he have a narcissistic collapse or him getting his way. The America we know is in trouble.

Overall I like your discussions and agree with your opinions. I recently figured out what narcissism, cluster B, sociopathy etc are due to wondering wth was wrong with my husband. I now realize my parents are on the narc spectrum. I'm surrounded by them and my life has been very negatively impacted by these pathetic individuals. However, I don't agree with you that Trump should be removed from office. Who would you rather be the POTUS? Hillary? Trump does not hold a candle to that psychopath!!! Most politicians I think are narcs to some degree anyway.

These links you post refer to studies that are quiet old. The links posted below represent the general consensus now. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23620353 www.elementsbehavioralhealth.com/mental-health/psychopathy-vs-antisocial-personality-disorder/ www.healthyplace.com/personality-disorders/psychopath/psychopath-vs-sociopath-what-s-the-difference

Fantomas the stats can get quite confusing but to clarify: for some time now the consensus has been that these constructs are distinct but related. The studies you cite --which I’m aware of- confirm this. To assert that disorders or traits are distinct doesn’t mean they’re uncorrelated. Given how each was defined there was bound to be overlap.
@Luisdefunes1
@Luisdefunes1 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, but notice that the correlation is asymmetric; that is, people with psychopathy have the ASP traits, but not otherwise (Hare psychopathy test).
@CraigMalkin
@CraigMalkin 6 жыл бұрын
Fantomas correct. All psychopaths are to some extent antisocial but not all people with ASPD are psychopaths. Nevertheless, some are, as we’d expect with distinct but overlapping constructs. Psychopathy and narcissism show a similar pattern. Thanks for your comments!

He is more effective than any other president before. Syria, Afghanistan are on the verge of peace for the first time in nearly 20 years. China gets kicked from her pedestal. And the EU Muslim lovers get kicked down as well, and their undemocratic ways exposed. The "scientific" god denying elites are of course furious about this. All from the same universities, just saying. Read the Book! The end of marriage and thus the nuclear family, killing babies (so people can go on with lots of partners), forcing children to decide their gender and operate on them before puberty, soft approaches to war which prolong the suffering unnecessarily, encouraging lazy people to continue their lifestyle with benefits, child support (making leaving sacred marriage easy)... I could go on.

I would like to address this topic and would love to have your explanation Doctor. First, McCain is NOT a hero. Please read more about his history before you call him a hero. The man McCain is far from a hero. Second, Aspergers is often mistaken for narcissism. Could that not be the case here? Also, he has very successful children who do not show any signs of being raised by a disordered parent. If they were truly raised by a man with malignant NPD, we would see some signs in at least a few of his kids. Finally, he has had two ex wives and many public, high-profile relationships (both intimate and casual), yet none of them speak about being abused in any way. I came to your KZfaq channel looking for advice on how to get away from my severely emotionally abusive and narc husband, i feel rather disappointed (but mostly terrified) that our psychiatric community is so shallow and lacking in area of discernment. Please tell me you can see this more clearly now?!

DisneylandLouie's I don’t diagnose Trump in this video; I explain what the terms mean. If you watch to the end you’ll even see I offer a solution for the split in our country. Most people don’t watch the video at all before commenting. I will say this: the continual gaslighting by the current administration has me deeply concerned. Since you sound like a supporter , maybe you can explain how you accept Presec and Trump claiming, for example, that he misspoke after singing Putin’s praises endlessly and saying, again and again, that he believed Putin’s denials. That’s just one example of his denying words and actions that are recorded for all the world to see. It’s as if reality doesn’t matter anymore. I’m far more concerned now than I was here, where I explained-and still believe-diagnosing the man merely stigmatizes mental illness.
