A Dreadnought is a cybernetic combat walker of intermediate size used by the Chapters of the Adeptus Astartes as heavy infantry support for their Space Marine companies. The most common form of Dreadnought deployed in the late 41st Millennium is officially designated a Castraferrum Pattern Dreadnought.
Even the superhuman Space Marines are still mortal and can fall in battle despite legends to the contrary amongst the common people of the Imperium of Man. Dreadnoughts are war incarnate, towering machines that advance forwards with thunderous strides, fiery death roaring from the myriad of heavy weapons mounted on their hulls. They are terrifying foes, fighting with all the skill and ferocity of a Space Marine, but combined with the durability and firepower of a battle tank.

There's a scene in one of the Space Marine books where a Tau mech pilot encounters a Dreadnought for the first time. He blasts the dread open, sees the horrendously disfigured remains of the space marine spilling out of the amniotic casket, gets the typical "die xenos scum" voiceline from it, and is in utter shock when his computer tells him that this thing is over 6000 years old, meaning it predates the Tau Empire.

Back in lockdown, my Mother couldn't leave her house, (she's 74) so i was getting her shopping for her. One day she asked what i liked online, but you can't really explain 40k in a couple of minutes, so i showed her the Dawn of War trailers. She liked the orks, the Space Marines were ok, but she preferred the Dreadnought, or as she put it ''I liked the big robot thing - he'd be really helpful doing the gardening''. I didn't like to tell her what's actually inside.

@@henrypaleveda7760 yeah "wings of sanguinius" is an ability blood angels librarians can take which gives them "fly" and extra movement. This applies to the librarian dread as well so this several ton war machine can float across the battlefield like a dainty butterfly

It's as I've always said: My headcanon is that the Old ones made the Krork second. They made the Eldar, saw where they'd fucked up, and then they made the Krork. They can do everything the Eldar can do but with cheaper and easier sourced parts, their psychic powers are hardly affected by Chaos at all, their gods were strong and clever enough to not just survive, but grab their own parts of the warp, and most importantly: the Krork and their descendants, the Orks are the only faction in all of 40k that the setting is not grimdark for. They are literally the perfect beings for such a universe.

I think was probably two different strategies or tiers of warriors. The Krorks for general warfare to hold the Necrons, and the Eldar for specific attacks on high value leaders and worlds; given the respective strengths of the two races.

My take on this is as follows: Old Ones realize they'll need new weapons because C'Tan and Necron are *not* the Necrontyr, they are a legitimate threat. So they try to think of 'the perfect warrior'. That's the Eldar. Reincarnating psychic hyper fast/aware soldiers directly connected to the immaterium who consider the Old One's as their Gods. They arm them with advanced Old One weaponry and give it a go! *_This does not work._* So now the Old ones try a few more 'sane' ideas first. Jokero and whatnot. It's not working, so Old One decides they've crossed the Godzilla threshold. "What if we weaponized an _ecosystem_ instead?" Krorks were that weaponized Ecosystem, and yes, technically it worked... technically. When the Immaterium was going full on Warp, the Necrons said 'screw this' and went into stasis, the Krorks slowly fell apart (due to lack of war/Brain boyz support) leaving the Eldar winners only by default as they waited out the Enslaver plague to die down. Orks are essentially a broken down weaponized ecosystem that, if things get serius enough, will *fix itself* and no one has the controls for it. Because no one ever did. If an Old One made the Tyranids, they're essentially Krork 2.0, now with Hivemind so we can control it this time. Edit: And even if an Old One made the Tyranids, I'm willing to bet the HIvemind got away from them and ate them alive. The Old One's were great engineers but horrible strategists.

@@Sorain1 Something to remember, the 'nids "shadow in the warp" has no effect on the ork. The brain boiz cans till create their psychic attacks without the 'nids being able to effect them one bit. The 'nids natural enemy is the ork. TWICE the 'nids got into a war with ork and GAVE UP, turning away and leaving the planet to the ork.

The way it went as I understand it: The Old Ones made the Eldar but found that while their psychic powers were great they were limited in terms of potential growth compared to their own. It was a decent effort but not enough. Then the Old Ones started a project to eventually evolve a species that _could_ have the same unlimited psychic potential as they did, but when the project lead got asked by increasingly anxious superiors how long it was going to take because the Necrons were starting to batter down the entrances to the webway, he said "oh, just another 60 million years, give or take a few, it'll be perfect!" In desperation the Old Ones took whatever parts they had left over from projects one and two, mixed it up with some terraforming fungus they still had lying around and hoped for the best because they were literally being eaten by horrible star gods at the time. Project 3 would eventually become the Orks. Project 2? _Humanity._

I don't remember what book it was in from the indomitus crusade, but one of my favorite bits from the books was this story of a dread having been brought back to base after victory and asks the Marine who came along if he'll stay with him while he goes t back into torpor. The way the audio book plays it you almost get the impression that the dread is like a child going to bed but needs a friend there to not be afraid of the dark that is coming. Despite being a centuries old war hero. Which was a nice twisty grimdark bit.

One of the saddest ones is the case where you essentially have Dreadnoughts with Alzheimers. Specifically, there was one from a group of loyalist Luna wolves who wondered when Horus was coming back, and the space marine taking care of him just felt sad for him because he can’t even remember that Horus fully betrayed the emperor.

The Orks, being Orks, actually have many different versions. Every Killa Kan and Deff Dread is a kustom job, and they have tech levels ranging from just levers and buttons for controlling them to the full Imperial style neural linkage where you just wire an Ork right into the thing and he never leaves. The difference is that the Orks that get wired in are almost always perfectly fine when they go in, and that EVERY Ork that has any interest in machines at all would give anything to get hooked up to one of those. Orks don't have the psychological issues with long term entombment, it's just a straight upgrade since they get a new metal body that they can strap more guns and spikes to.

Interestingly enough, one chapter of space marines, being the Red Scorpions, have a unique leviathan dreadnought. Carab Culln, who is the official chapter master. But due to him being in a leviathan dreadnought he’s not particularly “fit for duty,” so there are two unofficial chapter masters that run them while he’s asleep. The grey, yellow, and red picture of the leviathan was actually him.

Tbf back in the Rogue Trader they used to have a Imperial Army Dreadnought, which I like to Headcanon are still around but the tech is far more rare so all these ancient heroes of the Imperial Army are just tucked away in some Techpriest's Vault somewhere and are altars to the Machine God.

Here's an opinion that might be controversial: I dislike an Dreadnought design with a head. I think the sarcophagus is the waaayy cooler and more iconic design. Also this give the machine a more monster like feature, like a Xenomorph doesn't have eyes as well, but you know it can sense you. A Dreadnought should be working on sensors, not an actual tiny head poking out (looking at you Space Wolf)

The heads on some dreadnoughts are actually just a sensor housing. It’s explained that it helps them focus and feel more like themselves and not be over loaded.

Love listening to these but on Ork Deffdreads - they aren't having the greatest time in them either. They aren't just placed in, they are surgically wired up and cannot be removed afterward. From the Ork codex: "Being wired into a Deff Dread affords strength, resilience, and a terrifying array of vicious weaponry. Of course, the reality of being stuck in a metal box for life and drinking your meals through a straw soon gets old, but the pilots' resulting unhinged ferocity only serves to make Deff Dreads all the more dangerous in battle." Basically an Ork boy thinks it's a get-strong-quick scheme only to realize they've been scammed into becoming an angry weapon for life.

Fun Fact: the Eldar twins are typically Titan pilots, because their Titans require so much psychic energy they need twins specifically. In the event that only one dies, they go down in scale to the wraith knight. If both die, sometimes they can keep piloting the Titan however.

Being a nurglite dreadnought doesn't seem that bad relatively speaking. I mean, eventually all your meat should grow back. It'll be all warped and twisted because it'll be growing around a dreadnought as a skeleton, but that's pretty much par for the course for the average Nurgle worshipper anyway. Edit: Probably saves a bit on maintenance too because any bits that break or fall off would just be replaced with more meat.

I first got into 40k because someone who played Dawn of War 2 explained to me the concept of Dreadnoughts when I knew nothing about Warhammer and I said: "That's fucking brutal. Where do I get more of this?" Dreadnoughts are still one of my favorite bits of lore to date, stuff like The Anchorite of Almice has me make monke noises because I always love hearing about Loyalist Word Bearers due to how goddamn hard it would be to have them, but I find something inspiring with having such a level of dedication to resist chaos and the innate control Lorgar would have over you to *still* worship a guy who you know hates that you do it.

I enjoy, as a Space Wolf guy, DK's hate for the wolves. He 'technically' knows almost nothing about them but he likes Magnus there for he must hate Russ. I really can't wait for him to suffer through the inevitable Space Wolf episode. Either he'll change his tune or he'll just hate them more. It's down to how Bricky wants to present it. It's HARD to hate Bjorn, but I've met people who do.

"You forgot to mention"-comment: Bray'arth Ashmantle became wellknown during his first deployment. He went up against Genestealers and after a while his chapter lost track of him. He just vanished. One week later, he just burst out of a wall next to them, like the coolaid-man. He was covered in sut and ash (hence the name ashmantle) because he was walking through the sewersystems for the entire week, burning all genestealers and tyrannids he came across. That's also why there are tyrannid skulls on his standart and why there are carvings of tyrannids on his pauldrons.

The Word Bearers that became hybrids were a lot more chummy with their daemonic guests than most other possessed people in 40k though. I seriously wonder what the daemon thought of being mashed into a dreadnought? I mean you have to remember these are not Nurgle daemons, they feel something approximating pain, and their host sure as shit does, so it can't be all that fun for them either...

The process of being able to pilot a tin can is for the Painboy to go hogwild on the usually immensely stupid voluntary ork to the point the ork that goes inside is barely better than the dreadnought space marine. If I'm remembering the lore correctly (and if it's still canon) Orkz inside cannot grow like regular orkz in battle because almost all of their body is removed. In fact, here's a quote from supplemental material. "This is a painful and disorienting experience, which requires an Ork to trade away much of his natural Orkiness, and spend the rest of his days trapped in a claustrophobic, incredibly loud, hot, and uncomfortable metal can, with only a small slit provided to see through, in exchange for raw killing power" However, they're Orkz. The dumber the Ork is, the less he cares and the more fun he has because the Deff Dread allows for him to move as if it was his own body. If the Ork is in a warzone where conflict is perpetual like Octarius and is dumb enough to not think that he's going to spend the rest of his life in a hot, uncomfortably loud, claustrophobic metal box, he'll likely have a great time.

The original Ork dreadnought had the pilots surgically installed in to the dreads. So it took the Dok, Mek and Runtherd working together to get a kills can up and running.
