This video will show you how to build a motor mount to convert a nitro powered boat to electric... It's electrifying!
amzn.to/3XxuKK1 Starbond Flexible Medium CA is the only CA glue you will ever need and is available through my Amazon Affiliate link
amzn.to/3CW6DwJ 48 Inch Aluminum Straightedge - Gotta have it!
amzn.to/3iD3ZVK G/Flex Epoxy - This is the one you want for the majority of the assembly. Getcha some!
amzn.to/3XtMlSU Dremel wood cutting wheel as seen in my videos. You need this!
amzn.to/3QAtfIy Get this Dremel mandrel for mounting the cutting wheel.
amzn.to/3vXd7Yc Digital angle gauge. We'll be using this a LOT during the build. Get it now so you'll be ready.
amzn.to/3kbMdcq THE BEST epoxy application brushes - no stray hairs! Luv em!
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases - But the good news is there is no additional cost to you, only great products!

Call me crazy but I've watched all of your videos more than once. these videos are addicting. I'm about halfway through building my hydro, so I watch and then build I watch and then I build. then I go back and watch again and make sure I've built things correct. So now that I'm about halfway done, I'm ready to build another one already!!! hopefully we will see you at the pond some day and I can shake your hand and thank you for all the great info you have given us. keep the vids coming.

Great Video Scott! Made it to the end. I for one can appreciate how meticulous you are with everything! One tip for you for those wires coming out of the motor, I put several extra short pieces of heat shrink on each wire where they come through the can so that there is no way for the wires to ever arc against the can.(I learned the hard way...KABOOM!) A cool way to transfer hole spacing is to use a piece of masking tape and a pencil - tape over the motor bracket holes with a single piece of tape, then use the pencil to rub over the holes. Peel the tape and stick it on your mount, aligning the rear hole...then you'll have the correct spacing in a matter of seconds.

The plans have all sold out and I won't be printing more, sorry! From all the plans sold, I know of only two actually being built. The truth of the matter is it's very difficult to do from scratch, and so it just doesn't get done. The last thing I want to do is sell something that isn't useful, and that's why they're no longer available. As an alternative I'd strongly recommend the really excellent kits available from Mike at MLBoatworks. Take a look here mlboatworksrc.com/

Have you ever considered using aluminum rivet nuts? I don't know if there is a huge weight savings, but they are knurled and then squish to lock themselves in place, like a rivet... Less epoxy and not steel, may be worth a look?
@M5PerfHydros
@M5PerfHydros 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting idea, but a rivet nut leaves a flange on the surface of the material. For our purposes we need a flat surface with no protrusions. But I like your thinking!

Hi Dave, To be honest, I'm really just a nitro and gas guy who knows next to nothing about the electrics. All the parts you see in my conversion video were provided by Bill Brandt at Rattlesnake RC, who took possession of the boat immediately upon completion. Bill is a many-time electric champion who knows his volts, so I relied entirely on his advice. He's extremely approachable and helpful, so I'd recommend you contact him through his website here; www.allrc1.com and don't forget to tell him that I sent you!

@@M5PerfHydros Will do Scott. Im looking at the inexpensive electric systems avalible from China. Price of these is awfully attractive for the 4080 class power systems. It makes a boat like this possible on my budget. The performance you got is pretty impressive. Shows how far brushless motors have come in recent years. I've spent several evenings binge watching your videos. Im learning the boat side of things from watching people who know what they are doing. Im actually an airplane guy with an interest in boats. I fly electric sailplanes and ducted fan jets for the most part. I know composite construction and foam cutting pretty well. Electrical Engineer by trade so the electronics don't phase me too much. Ive pretty much figured that the more watts per inch of hull surface makes it faster. My working theory of rc boat electrics.🤣 Yours is the first electric conversion I've seen in this size range to have good performance. Im mainly interested in your conversion because I live in the home base of the miss madison, and I've got a young nephew who's interested. I can drive downtown to the museum and look at the classic hulls for inspiration. Taking my own pictures makes hull painting and documentation much easier. It's not the most refined hull ever raced but its a huge local pride factor. I just don't want my nephews boat experience to be limited to plastic toys from china.

@M5PerfHydros
@M5PerfHydros 9 күн бұрын
Fiberglass resin really isn't a great adhesive, plus it won't stick well to the hull if it's an epoxy fiberglass or wood boat. You'll be better off using a good two part marine epoxy like West System 105/206 or G-Flex. The adhesive filler is West System 406 colloidal silica, intended for the purpose of filling adhesives, also a better choice than chopping fiberglass. Cooling is needed most around the windings of the motor, and I really couldn't see cooling the mount as being helpful. Additionally, as best I could tell, the cooling channel milled into the mount is very small and I didn't want it causing a restriction to flow. Am I right or am I an idiot... Who knows?

Why not use aluminum angle stock rails on each side utilizing the old nitro motor mount bolt holes, bolted to the motor mount bottom holes ? Aluminum is Light Strong and best of all accepts threading, added bonus "no epoxy" permanently monoblocked no way of upgrading to other motor of waterjackets. With angle stock that disassembly would be child`s play for any modification or upgrades.
